Mechanisms of Nitrogen Excretion in Insects
Curr Opin Insect Sci. 2021 Feb 17:S2214-5745(21)00015-8. doi: 10.1016/j.cois.2021.02.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAvoiding the toxic effects of ammonia derived from catabolism of proteins and nucleic acids typically involves synthesis of the less soluble compound uric acid in insects, although some species which are not water stressed excrete ammonia directly. Some dipterans metabolize uric acid further to allantoin or urea. Uric acid plays diverse roles as a nitrogenous waste, nitrogen store, pigment, antioxidant and possibly a signaling molecule. Multiple transporters are implicated in urate transport, including me...

Feasibility and safety study of a high resolution wide field-of-view scanning endoscope for circumferential intraluminal intestinal imaging.
Abstract Global anal cancer incidence is increasing. High resolution anoscopy (HRA) currently screens for anal cancer, although the definitive test remains unknown. To improve on intraluminal imaging of the anal canal, we conducted a first-in-human study to determine feasibility and safety of a high-resolution, wide field-of-view scanning endoscope. Fourteen patients, under an IRB-approved clinical study, underwent exam under anesthesia, HRA, and imaging with the experimental device. HRA findings were photographed using an in-line camera attached to the colposcope and compared with the scanning endoscope images. P...

Least squares and maximum likelihood estimation of sufficient reductions in regressions with matrix-valued predictors.
Abstract We propose methods to estimate sufficient reductions in matrix-valued predictors for regression or classification. We assume that the first moment of the predictor matrix given the response can be decomposed into a row and column component via a Kronecker product structure. We obtain least squares and maximum likelihood estimates of the sufficient reductions in the matrix predictors, derive statistical properties of the resulting estimates and present fast computational algorithms with assured convergence. The performance of the proposed approaches in regression and classification is compared in simulatio...

An integrated system for forensic DNA testing of sexual assault cases in the Philippines.
Abstract In the Philippines, more than 7000 cases of sexual assault are reported annually. DNA technology is a powerful tool in identifying assailants. However, it is not routinely used in sexual assault investigations due to insufficient government support to cover the high cost of DNA testing and the absence of a national system for sample collection, handling, storage, and DNA testing of biological evidence. In itself, the nature of sexual assault samples containing DNA mixtures presents challenges to laboratory methods and interpretation of results. The sample recovered from the victim may only contain trace a...

An efficient microinjection method to generate human anaplasmosis agent Anaplasma phagocytophilum-infected ticks.
In this study, we report an efficient microinjection method to generate A. phagocytophilum-infected ticks in laboratory conditions. The dense-core (DC) form of A. phagocytophilum was isolated from in vitro cultures and injected into the anal pore of unfed uninfected Ixodes scapularis nymphal ticks. These ticks successfully transmitted A. phagocytophilum to the murine host. The bacterial loads were detected in murine blood, spleen, and liver tissues. In addition, larval ticks successfully acquired A. phagocytophilum from mice that were previously infected by feeding with DC-microinjected nymphal ticks. Transstadial transmis...

The direction of genital asymmetry is expressed stochastically in internally fertilizing anablepid fishes.
Abstract Animal genitalia vary considerably across taxa, with divergence in many morphological traits, including striking departures from symmetry. Different mechanisms have been proposed to explain this diversity, mostly assuming that at least some of the phenotypic variation is heritable. However, heritability of the direction of genital asymmetry has been rarely determined. Anablepidae are internally fertilizing fish where the anal fin of males has been modified into an intromittent organ that transfers sperm into the gonopore of females. Males of anablepid fishes exhibit asymmetric genitalia, and both left- an...

Luminescent Sm(III) complex bearing dynamic imine bonds as a multi-responsive fluorescent sensor for F- and PO43- anions together with Zn2+ cation in water samples.
Abstract We have designed and synthesized a new luminescent mononuclear samarium (III) complex Sm-2h based on the [1 + 1] Schiff-base macrocycle H2L2h, derived from the cyclocondensation reaction between dialdehyde and diamine precursors, and its exact architecture is determined to be [Sm(HL2h) (NO3)2]. The sensing ability of complex Sm-2h is carefully evaluated for various common inorganic ions in solution. It is shown that complex Sm-2h is a multi-responsive fluorimetric sensor with high selectivity for F- and PO43- anions together with Zn2+ cation. The sensing process is rapid within 60 s for F- ...
