Evaluation of anti-seizure medications and their serum concentration with regard to cardiovascular risk parameters: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: In our study, the majority of patients were children and adolescents. Regular monitoring of drug serum concentrations and metabolic parameters may be useful to select the safest drug in terms of cardiovascular disease risk. Randomized controlled trials on the long-term effects of anti-seizure treatment are needed.PMID:38657483 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2024.109802 (Source: Epilepsy and Behaviour)

Inappropriate laboratory test utilization in outpatient tertiary care: Implications for value-based healthcare
CONCLUSION: The study identified significantly high rates of inadequate repetitions of frequently requested laboratory tests. Urgent action is therefore crucial to overcoming such an issue.PMID:38657991 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230512 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

PCSK9 inhibition attenuates alcohol-associated neuronal oxidative stress and cellular injury
This study aimed to assess the effects of alirocumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting PCSK9 to lower systemic low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), on central nervous system (CNS) pathology in a rat model of chronic alcohol exposure. Alirocumab (50 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered weekly for six weeks in 32 male rats subjected to a 35 % ethanol liquid diet or a control liquid diet (n = 8 per group). The study evaluated PCSK9 expression, LDL receptor (LDLR) expression, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammatory markers in brain tissues. Chronic ethanol exposure increased PCSK9 expression in the brain, while alirocumab...

Association between lipoprotein(a) and cardiovascular disease in patients undergoing coronary angiography
CONCLUSION: The findings indicated that elevated lipoprotein(a) had no obvious relationship with hypertension and obesity. Elevated lipoprotein(a) increases the risk of high total cholesterol, high LDL‑c, and premature CAD, and increases the occurrence and severity of coronary heart disease.PMID:38658408 | DOI:10.1007/s00059-024-05247-0 (Source: Herz)

Treatment patterns and adherence to lipid-lowering drugs during eight-year follow-up after a coronary heart disease event
CONCLUSIONS: In this long-term follow-up of patients with CHD, less than 70 % used high-intensity statin therapy with only small changes over time, and only 25 % used additional treatment with ezetimibe. We identified factors associated with reduced statin adherence that may be target for interventions.PMID:38657552 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117550 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Comparison of the blood biochemical values of foraging and nesting Olive Ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) from Sinaloa, Mexico
Mar Environ Res. 2024 Apr 10;198:106491. doi: 10.1016/j.marenvres.2024.106491. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur study aimed to establish reference values for nesting females and compare them with those previously reported to understand olive ridley turtles' health status and contribute to long-term health assessment and monitoring in foraging and nesting areas from the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. In August and September 2018, morphometric data and biochemical profiles were collected from 33 nesting olive ridley turtles from Ceuta Beach Sanctuary (CBS) and 14 foraging female turtles captured at the foraging site, Navachiste ...

No effect of liraglutide on high density lipoprotein apolipoprotein AI kinetics in patients with type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSION: Six months of treatment with 1.2 mg/day of liraglutide had no effect on the kinetics of HDL apoAI in patients with T2D. The lack of decrease in triglyceride content in HDL related to an only moderate decrease in triglyceridemia, probably greatly explains these results. Insufficient improvement of insulin sensitivity and adiponectinemia may also be implied.PMID:38653365 | DOI:10.1016/j.diabet.2024.101535 (Source: Diabetes and Metabolism)
