A short-term rodent model for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis induced by a high-fat diet and carbon tetrachloride
This study aimed to evaluate the joint action of a high-fat diet and CCl4 in developing a short-term non-alcoholic steatohepatitis model. C57BL6/J mice were divided into two groups: standard diet-fed (SD), the high-fat diet-fed (HFD) and HFD + fructose-fed and carbon tetrachloride (HFD+CCl4). Animals fed with HFD+CCl4 presented increased lipid deposition compared with both SD and HFD mice. Plasma cholesterol was increased in animals from the HFD+CCl4 group compared to the SD and HFD groups, without significant differences between the SD and HFD groups. Plasma triglycerides showed no significant difference between the group...

Distal Upper Extremity Arterial Calcification as a Predictor for Subclinical Coronary Artery Disease by Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open. 2024 Apr 24;12(4):e5768. doi: 10.1097/GOX.0000000000005768. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTSeveral studies have linked calcification of the thoracic and lower extremity arterial trunks to an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Calcifications of the radial and/or ulnar artery are regularly identified in hand/wrist x-rays; however, the clinical relevance of these findings as related to identifying subclinical CAD is not well understood. Associations between CAD and upper extremity calcifications have been reported, but the timeline is unclear. The purpose of this study was...

Differential Impact In Vivo of Pf4- ΔCre-Mediated and Gp1ba-ΔCre-Mediated Depletion of Cyclooxygenase-1 in Platelets in Mice
CONCLUSIONS: Both approaches to Cox-1 deletion similarly restrain thrombogenesis, but a differential impact on Cox-1-dependent prostanoid formation by the vasculature may contribute to an inflammatory phenotype and accelerated atherogenesis in Pf4-ΔCre mice.PMID:38660804 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.320295 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Structural studies of a serum amyloid A octamer that is primed to scaffold lipid nanodiscs
This study suggests a new model for SAA–lipid interactions and provides new insight into how SAA might stabilize protein-lipid nanodiscs or even replace ApoA-I as a scaffold for HDL particles during inflammation. (Source: Protein Science)

Statin treatment reduces leucine turnover, but does not affect endogenous production of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB)
Statins, or hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors, are one of the most commonly prescribed medications for lowering cholesterol. Myopathic side-effects ranging from pain and soreness to critical rhabdomyolysis are commonly reported and often lead to discontinuation. The pathophysiological mechanism is, in general, ascribed to a downstream reduction of Coenzyme Q10 synthesis, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction. HMG-CoA is a metabolite of leucine and its corresponding keto acid α-ketoisocaproic acid (KIC) and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), however little is known about the changes in...

Subclinical Atherosclerosis to Guide Treatment in Dyslipidemia and Diabetes Mellitus
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus are two common conditions that are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In this review, we aimed to provide an in-depth and contemporary review of non-invasive approaches to assess subclinical atherosclerotic burden, predict cardiovascular risk, and guide appropriate treatment strategies. We focused this paper on two main imaging modalities: coronary artery calcium (CAC) score and computed tomography coronary angiography.Recent FindingsRecent longitudinal studies have provided stronger evidence on the relation...

Cardiovascular diseases in Switzerland - Prevalence and care
Praxis (Bern 1994). 2024 Mar;113(3):57-66.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent a significant health problem worldwide and in Switzerland. Despite preventive measures and advances in treatment, cardiovascular diseases still lead to a significant number of hospitalizations in Switzerland (133 000 in 2021) and are for responsible for almost 1/3 of all deaths (19 600 in 2021). Emergency care for acute cardiovascular events now has a very high standard in Switzerland compared to other countries. However, there is a large discrepancy between evidence and daily practice (evidence-performance gap) in cardiovascular risk...

Inappropriate laboratory test utilization in outpatient tertiary care: Implications for value-based healthcare
CONCLUSION: The study identified significantly high rates of inadequate repetitions of frequently requested laboratory tests. Urgent action is therefore crucial to overcoming such an issue.PMID:38657991 | DOI:10.15537/smj.2024.45.4.20230512 (Source: Saudi Medical Journal)

Association of lipid profile and obesity in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome
Conclusion. The results showed that abnormal lipid profile and obesity have a significant association with PCOS patients. Regular monitoring and treatment of PCOS patients are required to reduce the risk of infertility, MetS, and CVD.PMID:38656255 | DOI:10.2478/enr-2024-0009 (Source: Endocrine Regulations)

Association between lipoprotein(a) and cardiovascular disease in patients undergoing coronary angiography
CONCLUSION: The findings indicated that elevated lipoprotein(a) had no obvious relationship with hypertension and obesity. Elevated lipoprotein(a) increases the risk of high total cholesterol, high LDL‑c, and premature CAD, and increases the occurrence and severity of coronary heart disease.PMID:38658408 | DOI:10.1007/s00059-024-05247-0 (Source: Herz)
