Effect of pre-transplantation use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker in kidney transplant recipients-propensity score-matched analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In KT, the preoperative use of ACEi/ARBs did not significantly affect clinical outcomes including delayed graft function, postoperative renal function, hyperkalemia events, incidence of rejection, and graft survival rates compared to the patients who did not receive ACEi/ARBs.PMID:38684638 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-024-01938-3 (Source: Journal of Nephrology)

Acute respiratory failure due to pulmonary exacerbation in children with cystic fibrosis admitted in a pediatric intensive care unit: outcomes and factors associated with mortality
CONCLUSION: Children with CF admitted to PICU for acute respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary exacerbations are at high risk of death, both in the short and medium terms. Lung transplant is their main chance of survival and should be considered early.PMID:38685088 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02778-2 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Hepatocellular carcinoma and musculoskeletal system: A narrative literature review
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2109-2117. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2109.ABSTRACTMusculoskeletal alterations in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are less common than liver-related complications. However, they can significantly impact the quality of life and overall prognosis of patients with HCC. The main obstacle in the clinical assessment of HCC-induced musculoskeletal alterations is related to effective and timely diagnosis because these complications are often asymptomatic and unapparent during routine clinical evaluations. This narrative literature review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the contem...

Current status of liver transplantation for human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients in mainland China
This study provides an overview of the current landscape of HIV-positive patients receiving liver transplantation (LT) in mainland China. To date, our transplant center has conducted LT for eight end-stage liver disease patients co-infected with HIV, and all but one, who died two months postoperatively due to sepsis and progressive multi-organ failure, have survived. Comparative analysis with hepatitis B virus-infected patients during the same period revealed no statistically significant differences in acute rejection reactions, cytomegalovirus infection, bacteremia, pulmonary infections, acute kidney injury, new-onset can...

Cardiac Amyloidosis: A Contemporary Review of Medical and Surgical Therapy
Curr Cardiol Rev. 2024;20(2):72-81. doi: 10.2174/011573403X240302230925043500.ABSTRACTAmyloidosis is a systemic disease initiated by deposition of misfolded proteins in the extracellular space, due to which multiple organs may be affected concomitantly. Cardiac amyloidosis, however, remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this population due to infiltrative /restrictive cardiomyopathy. This review attempts to focus on contemporary medical and surgical therapies for the different types of cardiac amyloidosis. Amyloidosis affecting the heart are predominantly of the transthyretin type (acquired in the older or ge...

ABCG2-Expressing Clonal Repopulating Endothelial Cells Serve to Form and Maintain Blood Vessels
CONCLUSIONS: These results are the first to establish that a single prospective marker identifies CRECs in mice and human individuals, which holds promise to provide new cell therapies for repair of damaged vessels in patients with endothelial dysfunction.PMID:38682338 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.061833 (Source: Circulation)

Guideline for the management of Clostridioides difficile infection in pediatric patients with cancer and hematopoietic cell transplantation recipients: 2024 update
EClinicalMedicine. 2024 Apr 20;72:102604. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2024.102604. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTOur objective was to update a clinical practice guideline for the prevention and treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in pediatric patients with cancer and hematopoietic cell transplantation recipients. We reconvened an international multi-disciplinary panel. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the prevention or treatment of CDI in any population was updated and identified 31 new RCTs. Strong recommendations were made to use either oral metronidazole or oral vancomycin for no...

Kinetics of Recovery of Naive and Memory T Cells in Acute Leukemia Patients after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation Depending on Different GVHD Prophylaxis Regimens
Conclusion: These experimental outcomes contribute to providing the best understanding of immunological events that occur early after transplantation and help in the rational choice of GVHD prophylaxis in patients who will undergo allogeneic transplantation. Our study demonstrated the comparable immunological effects of posttransplant cyclophosphamide and ex vivo T cell depletion and immunological inefficiency of horse ATG for GVHD prevention.PMID:38680716 | PMC:PMC11055426 | DOI:10.18502/ijhoscr.v18i1.14742 (Source: Cell Research)

Fludarabine-Based Reduced-Intensity Conditioning Regimen for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in a Pediatric Patient with Sickle Cell Disease: A Case Report
Int J Hematol Oncol Stem Cell Res. 2024 Jan 1;18(1):104-109. doi: 10.18502/ijhoscr.v18i1.14750.ABSTRACTReduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens have the potential to decrease toxicities related to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). While initial results may have been acceptable in adults and young adults, there are no well-established strategies in children with SCD. Here, it is described the clinical course of two children with symptomatic SCD who have successfully undergone HSCT using Fludarabin-based conditioning.PMID:38680715 | PMC:PMC11055425 | DOI:10.18502/i...

Cost-Effectiveness of Lovotibeglogene Autotemcel (Lovo-Cel) Gene Therapy for Patients with Sickle Cell Disease and Recurrent Vaso-Occlusive Events in the United States
ConclusionsOur analysis of lovo-cel gene therapy compared with common care for patients in the US with SCD with recurrent VOEs estimated meaningful improvements in survival, quality of life, and other clinical outcomes accompanied by increased overall costs for the health care system and for broader society. The predicted economic value of lovo-cel gene therapy was influenced by uncertainty in long-term clinical effects and by positive spillover effects on patient productivity and caregiver burden. Temporomandibular Joint and Dental Complications in Long-Term Survivors of Children with Leukemia after Chemoradiotherapy and Stem Cell Transplantation
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of chemoradiotherapy and transplantation on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and dental status in leukemia and stem cell transplantation (SCT) patients. The study included 44 patients and 22 controls. Participants were categorized into three groups: patients with leukemia in Group-1 (n = 22), patients with SCT in Group-2 (n = 22), and controls in Group-3 (n = 22). All patients were evaluated using the Diagnostic Criteria for TMJ Disorders (TMD), as well as clinical and radiographic assessments. TMD was found in 19 (86%) of the 22 patien...

Eligibility of a novel BW  + technology and comparison of sensitivity and specificity of different imaging methods for radiological caries detection
ConclusionsWithin the limits of the study, BW  + showed great potential for added diagnostic value, especially for dentinal caries. However, the tradeoff of diagnostic benefit and radiation exposure must be considered according to each patient’s age and risk. (Source: Oral Radiology)
