The Effect of Pringle Maneuver Applied during Living Donor Hepatectomy on the Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Observed in the Donors and Recipients
Conclusions: Although the histological scoring of hepatocyte damage was found to be higher in the Pringle maneuver group, the Pringle maneuver did not augment ischemia-reperfusion injury in donors and recipients that was evaluated by clinical and laboratory analyses.PMID:38674295 | PMC:PMC11051728 | DOI:10.3390/medicina60040649 (Source: Medicina (Kaunas))

Human Herpes Virus-6 (HHV-6) Reactivation after Hematopoietic Cell Transplant and Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)- T Cell Therapy: A Shifting Landscape
Viruses. 2024 Mar 24;16(4):498. doi: 10.3390/v16040498.ABSTRACTHHV-6B reactivation affects approximately half of all allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. HHV-6B is the most frequent infectious cause of encephalitis following HCT and is associated with pleiotropic manifestations in this setting, including graft-versus-host disease, myelosuppression, pneumonitis, and CMV reactivation, although the causal link is not always clear. When the virus inserts its genome in chromosomes of germ cells, the chromosomally integrated form (ciHHV6) is inherited by offspring. The condition of ciHHV6 is characterized b...

Acute mixed-lineage leukemia treated with desensitization therapy prior to HLA-haploidentical transplantation with high donor-specific antibodies
Int J Hematol. 2024 Apr 27. doi: 10.1007/s12185-024-03775-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 43-year-old woman was referred to our department for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia, as she failed to achieve remission following induction therapy. Umbilical cord blood transplantation was initially planned; however, multiple anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies with a mean fluorescence intensity of over 10,000 were detected, and optimal umbilical cord blood could not be obtained. The plan was then switched to peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) from the patient's son, wh...

Evaluation of Stages, Treatment Protocols, and Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer among West Bank Patients
Conclusions: A high percentage of patients were diagnosed in advanced CRC stages. The treatment modes were adopted from general international guidelines; however, the cure rates were low, and mortality was high. More studies need to be undertaken to investigate the actual application of chemotherapy protocols, and survival would benefit from the involvement of clinical pharmacists in the chemotherapy protocol selection, dosing, frequency, and follow-up. The present study advocates for greater public awareness of CRC and attests to the merits of screening by primary care professionals, which can help to avoid this serious i...

Immune Checkpoint molecules in solid organ transplantation: a promising way to prevent rejection
Immunol Lett. 2024 Apr 25:106860. doi: 10.1016/j.imlet.2024.106860. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmune checkpoint (IC) molecules modulate immune responses upon antigen presentation; the interaction between different IC molecules will result in the stimulation or, rather, the thwarting of such responses. Tumor cells express increased amounts of inhibitory IC molecules in an attempt to evade immune responses; therapeutic agents have been developed that bind inhibitory IC molecules, restoring tumor-directed immune responses and changing the prognosis of a number of cancers. Stimulation of inhibitory IC molecules could be be...

Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibit Oxidative Stress-Induced Pyroptosis in Annulus Fibrosus Cells to Alleviate Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Based on Matric Hydrogels
This study was aimed to investigate the role of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in IVDD and the molecular mechanism. Annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) were treated with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) to induce oxidative stress injury. AFC biological functions were analyzed using a lactate dehydrogenase kit, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, flow cytometry, and western blot. The molecular mechanisms of BMSC functions were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR, western blot, immunoprecipitation (IP), co-IP, GST pull-down, and cycloheximide treatment. Furthermore, the impacts of BMSCs in IVDD progression in vivo were ev...

Microbiota Transplantation as an Adjunct to Standard Periodontal Treatment in Periodontal Disease: A Systematic Review
Medicina (Kaunas). 2024 Apr 21;60(4):672. doi: 10.3390/medicina60040672.ABSTRACTPeriodontitis is a disease linked to severe dysbiosis of the subgingival microbiome. The treatment of periodontitis aims to change the dysbiosis environment to a symbiosis environment. We hypothesized that oral microbiota transplantation can lead to a significant improvement in periodontitis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of microbiota transplantation after standard periodontal treatment in periodontitis patients. The search strategy was carried out by using the Boolean term "AND" to combine the keywords, w...

Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Origin in Children: Analysis of 17 Cases Admitted to the Bambino Ges ù Children's Hospital in Rome
This study described 17 cases of children admitted to the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital with acute hepatitis of unknown origin between mid-April and November 2022. Following the World Health Organization's working case definition of probable cases, 17 children, with a median age of 2.1 years (interquartile range: 1.0-7.1), presenting with acute hepatitis non-AE, with serum transaminase >500 IU/L, were included in the study. A pre-specified set of microbiological tests was performed on different biological specimens for all pediatric patients. All patients resulted negative for the common hepatotropic viruses. The mo...

Novel JAK Inhibitors to Reduce Graft-Versus-Host Disease after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in a Preclinical Mouse Model
Molecules. 2024 Apr 16;29(8):1801. doi: 10.3390/molecules29081801.ABSTRACTAllogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is a highly effective, well-established treatment for patients with various hematologic malignancies and non-malignant diseases. The therapeutic benefits of allo-HCT are mediated by alloreactive T cells in donor grafts. However, there is a significant risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), in which the donor T cells recognize recipient cells as foreign and attack healthy organs in addition to malignancies. We previously demonstrated that targeting JAK1/JAK2, mediators of interferon-gamma rec...

Successful haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria with severe pancytopenia developed after long ‐term aplastic anemia treatment
Clinical course of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for aplastic anemia-paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (AA-PNH) syndrome. Key Clinical MessageHaploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with posttransplant cyclophosphamide is an alternative treatment for aplastic anemia –paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) syndrome with poor prognostic factors. Ravulizumab treatment for PNH before HSCT might have a beneficial effect. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Changing etiological spectrum of acute liver failure
ConclusionsThe most common cause for ALF was hepatitis A virus, followed by hepatitis B virus, while in ALF mimics it was malaria followed by dengue fever, in our study. Patients of ALF mimics can have similar presentation, but a high index of suspicion and awareness is required to identify the common infectious ALF mimics for early diagnosis.Graphical Abstract (Source: Indian Journal of Gastroenterology)
