Characterization of Fat Used for the Optimization of the Soft Tissue Envelope of the Nose in Rhinoplasty
We report 21 patients who underwent SRP on a voluntary basis. All patients had either thin skin and/or revision SRP with scarring. Macroscopic fat harvested from the periumbilical or rib region was minced and purified. PRF was obtained by centrifugation of autologous whole blood samples and mixed with the fat to form a graft, which was then transferred to the nasal dorsum. Postoperative monitoring of graft survival included sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the nose. The harvested adipose tissue was also analyzed in vitro. In the postoperative follow-up after 1 year, survival of the adipose tissue was demo...

Dengue-related acute liver failure —A scoping review
AbstractInfection by dengue virus is common in tropical countries. Hepatic involvement in dengue can range from asymptomatic elevation of transaminases to life-threatening acute liver failure (ALF). Dengue-related ALF (DALF) is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality, especially in Southeast Asia. However, there is a scarcity of literature on DALF, necessitating a thorough examination of its clinical determinants and management strategies. All relevant studies related to DALF were reviewed until December 2023. Case reports, case series and studies reporting ALF in dengue infection were included. Demographics, c...

Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis in a Patient Requiring Allotransplant
A woman in her late-50s with a 3-year history of progressive hypoxemic respiratory failure, severe pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular dysfunction was referred for lung transplant assessment. She noted persistent cough and dyspnea on exertion. Pulmonary function testing demonstrated a severe restrictive defect. High-resolution computed tomography of the thorax showed bilateral diffuse interlobular and intralobular septal thickening and ground-glass opacities with extensive calcific deposits (Figure  1). Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Access in Patients with Relapsed/Refractory Large B-Cell Lymphoma: Association of Access with Social Determinants of Health and Travel Time to Treatment Centers
Large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with a US incidence rate of 5.5 per 100,000 men and women per year and a 5-year overall survival rate of 64.7%.1 Although two-thirds of patients with LBCL are cured with standard chemoimmunotherapy regimens, 30%-40% of patients will either have progression of disease or relapse after initial response.2,3 (Source: Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation)

Impact of Early Cytomegalovirus Reactivation after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation on Relapse in Patients with Myelodysplastic Syndrome: A Nationwide Retrospective Study from Adult Myelodysplastic Syndrome Working Group of the JSTCT
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation is a well-recognized major complication associated with morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).1-5 Although different prophylactic and pre-emptive approaches have been developed to manage CMV reactivation in allogeneic HSCT recipients, several studies still emphasized the negative association between CMV reactivation and various post-transplant outcomes, including non-relapse mortality caused by infectious complications or graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and overall survival. Outcome of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in a Child with Myelodysplastic Neoplasm with Complex Karyotype and ETV6 Variant: Challenges in Treatment
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is the only treatment with the potential for cure in patients with myelodysplastic neoplasm (MDS). Nevertheless, disease relapse is the main cause of treatment failure. Due to the rarity of childhood MDS (cMDS), there are few studies showing the impact of cytogenetic alterations and genetic variants on outcomes of allo-HSCT, mainly focusing on clonal chromosomal evolution (CCE) during relapse post-transplant. Here, we describe a 3-year-old boy with cMDS-IB, who evolved to MDS/AML. At diagnosis, the patient showed a complex karyotype with chromosomal abnormaliti...

Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for paediatric patients with x-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome
The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic factors of haploid hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome. Seven children with X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome diagnosed by XIAP gene analysis were enrolled. The conditioning regimens were tolerated in all seven patients, and the median time of neutrophil engraftment was 10 days (8-13 days), that of platelet engraftment was 21 days (14-24 days). STR-PCR analysis on the peripheral blood cells showed complete donor origins. Four cases developed Grade I acute graft versus host disease (aGVHD), one developed...

Adipose Tissue-Brain Interactions Modulate an Anorexia-Related Phenotype in Mice
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by hypophagia, low body weight, and compulsive exercise. The activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm induces aspects of AN in rodents. We tested whether transplanting adipose tissue from high fat diet-fed obese mice into normal weight recipient mice would attenuate ABA in recipients. We also assessed whether the effects of transplanted obese fat depend upon hypothalamic AgRP neurons. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Sickle Cell Disease: A Multidimentional Review
Cell Transplant. 2024 Jan-Dec;33:9636897241246351. doi: 10.1177/09636897241246351.ABSTRACTWhile exagamglogene autotemcel (Casgevy) and lovotibeglogene autotemcel (Lyfgenia) have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first cell-based gene therapies for the treatment of patients 12 years of age and older with sickle cell disease (SCD), this treatment is not universally accessible. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) has the potential to eradicate the symptoms of patients with SCD, but a significant obstacle in HSCT for SCD is the availability of suitable donors, particularly human...

Mortality rate after total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty in patients with a history of liver transplant
World J Orthop. 2024 Apr 18;15(4):310-311. doi: 10.5312/wjo.v15.i4.310. eCollection 2024 Apr 18.ABSTRACTIn this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023; 14: 784-790. It is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant (LT) may need to have a total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implanted. Ahmed et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general population. However, there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA ...
