Safe and sustainable fish and seafood system and per- and poly-fluorinated substances occurrence: the role of PFAS toxicity in the assessment
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33550-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFish and seafood are valuable sources of both nutrients and organic contaminants. The expansion of the analytical per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) panel with toxicological characterisation necessitates an update of PFAS intake assessment and management within the context of cumulative exposure. Benthic and demersal seafood, such as clams, squid, and cuttlefish, are more prone to contamination with C9-C14 perfluorocarboxylic acids, exhibiting the highest relative potency factors in terms of immunotoxicity, accord...

Tailoring electrospun nanocomposite fibers of polylactic acid for seamless methylene blue dye adsorption applications
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33393-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe introduction of biopolymers, which are sustainable and green materials, desegregated nature's water purification proficiency with science and technology, opens a new sustainable methodology in water reclamation. In order to introduce an efficacious adsorbent system for MB dye-toxic pollutant, adsorption, providing robust mechanical properties and facile processability, a facile system was introduced via electrospinning utilizing polylactic acid (PLA) and Ti3C2Tx, viz., PMX. The addition of 3 wt.% Ti3C2Tx led to a 3-fo...

Pervasive influence of heavy metals on metabolic pathways is potentially relieved by hesperidin to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Bassia scoparia
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33530-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHesperidin (HSP), a flavonoid, is a potent antioxidant, metal chelator, mediator of signaling pathways, and regulator of metal uptake in plants. The study examined the ameliorative effects of HSP (100 μM) on Bassia scoparia grown under excessive levels of heavy metals (zinc (500 mg kg-1), copper (400 mg kg-1), cadmium (100 mg kg-1), and chromium (100 mg kg-1)). The study clarifies the underlying mechanisms by which HSP lessens metabolic mayhem to enhance metal stress tolerance and phytoremediation efficiency of Bassia sc...

Reviewing the use of zebrafish for the detection of neurotoxicity induced by chemical mixtures through the analysis of behaviour
In conclusion, the results of this study show the versatility of zebrafish as a model for the detection of mixture toxicity although, for what concerns behavioural analysis, the lack of standardisation of methods and endpoints might still be limiting.PMID:38710414 | DOI:10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142246 (Source: Chemosphere)

Microplastics Removal Efficiency and Risk Analysis of Wastewater Treatment Plants in Oman
This study aimed to assess the MPs load of three wastewater treatment facilities in Oman using various treatments, including MBR, SBR, and CAS. Wastewater samples from influent, effluent, and sludge were collected and analyzed to determine the concentration, morphology, size, color, and polymer type of the MPs. A set of sieves with a mesh size range of 1 mm to 45 μm was used to for filteration. Oxidation treatment was applied for all samples using Fenton's reagent, followed by density separation by sodium chloride solution. The Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR- FTIR) method was uti...

Joint toxic mechanism of clothianidin and prochloraz in the earthworm (Eisenia fetida)
Chemosphere. 2024 May 4:142250. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142250. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPesticides are typically present as combinations within soil ecosystems and have detrimental effects on untamed surroundings. However, the collective impacts and fundamental mechanisms of pesticides on soil living beings are currently inadequately assessed. In our current work, we evaluated the interactive consequences of clothianidin (CLO) and prochloraz (PRO) on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) using several toxicological tests, such as acute adverse effects, biocatalytic activity, and alterations in transcriptional activity....

Achieving a Deeply Desodiated Stabilized Cathode Material by the High Entropy Strategy for Sodium-ion Batteries
In this study, a high-entropy strategy is proposed to enhance the high-voltage capacity and cycling stability. The designed P2-Na0.67Mn0.6Cu0.08Ni0.09Fe0.18Ti0.05O2 achieves a deeply desodiation and delivers charging capacity of 158.1 mA h g-1 corresponding to 0.61 Na with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 98.2%. The charge compensation is attributed to the cationic and anionic redox reactions conjunctively. Moreover, the crystal structure is effectively stabilized, leading to a slight variation of lattice parameters. This research carries implications for the expedited development of low-cost, high-energy-density cat...

Effects of Fluoride Toxicity on Female Reproductive System of Mammals: A Meta-Analysis
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04203-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConsiderable integrative efforts have been made to investigate the effects of fluoride on female reproductive organs since the last years. The ingestion of fluoride causes adverse effects on human health like causing skeletal fluorosis, dental fluorosis, bone fractures, kidney problems, decrease birth rates, weakening of thyroid functionality, and impair intelligence, particularly in children. In this review, we discuss the adverse effects of fluoride on female reproductive organs and presented certain remedies. A total of 53 pa...
