A young patient with Graves' disease presenting with a triad of heart failure, pancytopenia, and jaundice: A case report
We describe a case of a young man who presented with progressive cough, increased abdominal girth and ankle swelling for a few months. On examination, he had jaundice, bilateral exophthalmos, diffuse goiter, ascites, and significant lower limb edema. Laboratory investigations showed increased Thyroxin level with a suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone and positive anti-thyrotropin receptor antibodies. Also, the patient had pancytopenia, coagulopathy and cholestatic pattern of elevated liver enzymes. Echocardiography demonstrated mildly reduced left ventricular function with diastolic dysfunction, but electrocardiogram did...

Impact of methimazole ‐induced hypothyroidism on postnatal swine
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism induced with the antithyroid medication methimazole (MMI). 10  mg/kg MMI significantly decreased circulating triiodothyronine (T3) for the duration of treatment but had only a transient effect on circulating thyroxine (T4). Thyroid tissue weight was significantly increased by more than 3.5-fold in response to MMI treatment. Histologically, the eosinophilic c olloid was largely absent from the thyroid follicle which displayed a disorganized columnar epithelium consistent with goiter. MMI induced hypothyroidism has no effect on growth rate over 28 d...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1646: Protective Effects of Melatonin against Carcinogen-Induced Oxidative Damage in the Thyroid
a Melatonin, primarily synthesized in the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms and possesses significant antioxidative properties. By neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, melatonin emerges as a promising agent for the prevention and therapy of many different disorders, including cancer. This paper reviews the relationship between the thyroid gland and melatonin, presenting experimental evidence on the protective effects of this indoleamine against oxidative damage to macromolecules in thyroid tissue caused by documented carcinogens (as classified by the International A...

Calcium oxalate crystals as a cause of multiple punctate echogenic foci in benign thyroid lesions
ConclusionAppearance of MPEF in GDs and FNDs is not because of psammoma bodies; it is attributable to CaOx crystals larger than 100  μm. Therefore, MPEF is not an indicator of malignancy. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Patterns in the Reporting of Aggressive Histologic Subtypes in Papillary Thyroid Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Aggressive subtypes of PTC are associated with worse outcomes. Academic and other facilities in the Middle Atlantic were more likely to report aPTC. This suggests the need for further evaluation of environmental or geographic factors versus a need for increased awareness and more accurate diagnosis of these subtypes.PMID:38657351 | DOI:10.1016/j.jss.2024.03.023 (Source: Cell Research)

Efficacy and safety of fibrin sealant application in patients undergoing thyroidectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Surg. 2024 Apr 24;24(1):122. doi: 10.1186/s12893-024-02414-2.ABSTRACTVarious studies have focused on the application of fibrin sealants (FS) in thyroid surgery. Utilizing a meta-analysis, this systematic review analyzed the findings of recent randomized controlled trials on the safety and efficacy of FS in patients who underwent thyroidectomy. The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Medline databases were searched for relevant studies, without any language restrictions. Seven randomized controlled trials were included in the originally identified 69 studies. Overall, 652 patients received FS during th...

Thyroid Cancer and Endocrine Disruptive Chemicals: A Case-Control Study on Per-fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and Other Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests, for the first time in a case-control population, that exposure to some PFAS and PCBs associates with TC and some clinical and molecular features. On the contrary, an inverse correlation was found with both PFHxS and pollutants' mixture, likely due to a potential reverse causality.PMID:38657654 | DOI:10.1530/ETJ-23-0192 (Source: Cancer Control)

Identification of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 4B as a Novel Candidate Gene for Congenital Hypothyroidism
CONCLUSION: These experimental data supported a role for EIF4B function in the pathogenesis of the hypothyroid phenotype seen in CH patients. Our work indicated that EIF4B was identified as a novel candidate gene in CH. EIF4B is essential for animal survival, but further studies are needed to validate its role in the pathogenesis of CH.PMID:38654471 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae270 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)

Associations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with maternal early second trimester sex-steroid hormones
CONCLUSION: PFAS mixture modeled using QGComp was not associated with maternal sex-steroid hormones due to potential opposing effects of certain PFAS.
