Predictors for Difficult Laryngeal Exposure in Suspension Laryngoscopy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Our study made a comprehensive and systematic analysis of The DLE relevant factors. Gender, age, body mass index(BMI), neck circumference (NC), modified Mallampati's index(MMI), inter-incisor gap(IIG), hyoid-mental distance (HMD), thyroid-mental distance (TMD), sterno-mental distance (SMD), and flexion-extension angle were eventually identified as highly correlated factors for DLE.PMID:38659242 | DOI:10.21053/ceo.2023.00023 (Source: Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology)

Iopanoic acid alters thyroid hormone-related gene expression, thyroid hormone levels, swim bladder inflation, and swimming performance in Japanese medaka
This study confirmed that IOP inhibits dio expression (a molecular initiating event), affects T3 and T4 levels (a key event), and reduces swim bladder inflation (a key event) and swimming performance (an adverse outcome) in Japanese medaka.PMID:38663833 | DOI:10.1016/j.cbpc.2024.109930 (Source: Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Identification and validation of an anoikis-related genes signature for prognostic implication in papillary thyroid cancer
This study explored the impact of anoikis on PTC prognosis. Analyzing data from GEO, TCGA, and GeneCards, we identified a prognostic signature consisting of six anoikis-related genes (ARGs): EZH2, PRKCQ, CD36, INHBB, TDGF1, and MMP9. This signature independently predicted patient outcomes, with high-risk scores associated with worse prognoses. A robust predictive ability was confirmed via ROC analysis, and a nomogram achieved a C-index of 0.712. Differences in immune infiltration levels were observed between high- and low-risk groups. Importantly, the high-risk group displayed reduced drug sensitivity and poor responses to...

Does the extent of neck surgery based on preoperative calcitonin level influence survival in medullary thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective tertiary centre experience
CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference in outcomes between high and low calcitonin groups. A selective approach to performing LND in MTC patients based on clinical and imaging findings suggesting disease presence in the lateral neck should be explored further.PMID:38661438 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2024.0033 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

A young patient with Graves' disease presenting with a triad of heart failure, pancytopenia, and jaundice: A case report
We describe a case of a young man who presented with progressive cough, increased abdominal girth and ankle swelling for a few months. On examination, he had jaundice, bilateral exophthalmos, diffuse goiter, ascites, and significant lower limb edema. Laboratory investigations showed increased Thyroxin level with a suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone and positive anti-thyrotropin receptor antibodies. Also, the patient had pancytopenia, coagulopathy and cholestatic pattern of elevated liver enzymes. Echocardiography demonstrated mildly reduced left ventricular function with diastolic dysfunction, but electrocardiogram did...

Impact of methimazole ‐induced hypothyroidism on postnatal swine
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of hypothyroidism induced with the antithyroid medication methimazole (MMI). 10  mg/kg MMI significantly decreased circulating triiodothyronine (T3) for the duration of treatment but had only a transient effect on circulating thyroxine (T4). Thyroid tissue weight was significantly increased by more than 3.5-fold in response to MMI treatment. Histologically, the eosinophilic c olloid was largely absent from the thyroid follicle which displayed a disorganized columnar epithelium consistent with goiter. MMI induced hypothyroidism has no effect on growth rate over 28 d...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1646: Protective Effects of Melatonin against Carcinogen-Induced Oxidative Damage in the Thyroid
a Melatonin, primarily synthesized in the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms and possesses significant antioxidative properties. By neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, melatonin emerges as a promising agent for the prevention and therapy of many different disorders, including cancer. This paper reviews the relationship between the thyroid gland and melatonin, presenting experimental evidence on the protective effects of this indoleamine against oxidative damage to macromolecules in thyroid tissue caused by documented carcinogens (as classified by the International A...
