Study of the metabolic syndrome severity index as a predictive factor of a major cardiovascular event in premenopausal women with systemic lupus erythematosus
CONCLUSIONS: The MetSx-IMC severity index, contrary to the binary approaches, is recommended to evaluate MS as a predictor of MACE in SLE patients. Offering improved and more accurate prognosis in patients at risk of developing MCE.PMID:38697892 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2024.01.041 (Source: Medicina Clinica)

Regulation of iodine-glucose flip-flop in SW1736 anaplastic thyroid cancer cell line
CONCLUSION: Multiple mechanisms point to Rutin's role as a major stimulator of iodide uptake and inhibitor of glucose uptake, including effects at the mRNA and protein levels for both NIS and GLUTs, respectively. Here in, we described the flip-flop phenomenon as a possible therapeutic target for ATC. Moreover, Rutin is first documented here as a NIS expression inducer capable of restoring cell differentiation in SW1736 cell line. It also be concluded that GLUTs as metabolic targets can be blocked specifically by Rutin for thyroid cancer prevention and treatment.PMID:38698299 | DOI:10.1007/s40618-024-02377-4 (Source: Cancer Control)

Clinicopathological profile of head and neck cancers in Army Hospital of Nepal: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Head and neck cancers are not uncommon and majority of patients present late with advanced stage cancer. Hence, public awareness, early diagnosis with cost-effective treatment and regular follow-up are needed to improve outcomes of these patients in our society.PMID:38694395 | PMC:PMC11060235 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001918 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma arising from substernal goiter: a case report
CONCLUSION: In this manuscript, the authors aimed to present a unique case report with challenging diagnostic features including the rapid development of an infiltrative poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma from a SG highlighting the importance of a detailed histopathological examination of thyroid nodules in the absence of significant medical history.PMID:38694372 | PMC:PMC11060243 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001868 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Changes in thyroid hormone concentrations over time in dogs with autoimmune thyroiditis
The objective of this study was to follow long-term changes in the concentration of thyroid hormones in dogs with subclinical thyroiditis.SAMPLES: Samples were obtained from 125 dogs with subclinical thyroiditis. The study population included 70 female and 55 male dogs. The mean testing interval was 3.9 years from initial testing (SD, 2.3 years; range, 1 to 9 years).METHODS: Dogs with subclinical thyroiditis were identified retrospectively using results from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals Canine Thyroid Profile performed by the Endocrinology Section of the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Owners ...

Changes in the structural and functional state of the thyroid gland of small mammals when exposed to low-intensity chronic radiation
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33504-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study gives a morphofunctional assessment of the state of the thyroid gland of tundra voles (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) in conditions of an increased radiation background (the Ukhta district of the Komi Republic (Russia) and the 30-km zone of the Chernobyl NPP), as well as in an experiment with chronic external gamma irradiation in the low dose range. The work summarizes the experience of more than 35 years of field and laboratory research. The authors have noted the high sensitivity of the thyroid gland to chronic rad...

Using case-based learning supported by role-playing situational teaching method in endocrine physiology education
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1152/advan.00232.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmbedding clinically relevant learning experience to basic science subjects is desired for the preclinical phase of the undergraduate medical education. The present study aims to modify case-based learning (CBL) with role-playing situational teaching method and assess the student feedback and learning effect. 176 sophomore students majoring in clinical medicine from Harbin Medical University were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (n=90) who received the traditional hybrid teaching, and the experimental group (n=86),...

Abnormalities in pharyngeal arch-derived structures in SATB2-associated syndrome
Clin Genet. 2024 May 1. doi: 10.1111/cge.14540. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSATB2-associated syndrome (SAS, glass syndrome, OMIM#612313) is a neurodevelopmental autosomal dominant disorder with frequent craniofacial abnormalities including palatal and dental anomalies. To assess the role of Satb2 in craniofacial development, we analyzed mutant mice at different stages of development. Here, we show that Satb2 is broadly expressed in early embryonic mouse development including the mesenchyme of the second and third arches. Satb2-/- mutant mice exhibit microglossia, a shortened lower jaw, smaller trigeminal ganglia, and lar...

Early-pregnancy sex steroid and thyroid function hormones, thyroid autoimmunity, and maternal papillary thyroid cancer incidence in the Finnish Maternity Cohort
Int J Cancer. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1002/ijc.34974. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThyroid cancer more commonly affects women than men and is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer among women of reproductive age. We conducted a nested case-control study within the Finnish Maternity Cohort to evaluate pre-diagnostic sex steroid and thyroid function markers in relation to subsequent maternal papillary thyroid cancer. Cases (n = 605) were women ages 18-44 years, who provided an early-pregnancy (<20 weeks gestation) blood sample and were diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer up to 11 years afterward. Controls (n = 1185)...
