What should be included in an Olympic Sports International Federations pregnancy and postpartum policy and guidance?
Many women have to choose between having children and their athletic career.1 However, times are changing, and some elite female athletes are continuing to compete during pregnancy and the postpartum period (2 years following childbirth).1 2 Pregnant athletes should be encouraged, when medically safe, to exercise throughout their pregnancy and the postpartum period due to the health gains for both the mother and unborn child, similar to the non-athletic population.3 Appropriately, there are concerns about the safety of some exercise forms and durations during pregnancy and the postpartum period, especially for elite athlet...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 2742: Microwave Dielectric Response of Bovine Milk As Pregnancy Detection Tool in Dairy Cows
This study suggests employing microwave dielectric spectroscopy (MDS, 0.5–40 GHz) as a method to evaluate reproduction events in dairy cows. The approach involves the integration of MDS data with information on milk solids to detect pregnancy and identify early embryonic loss in dairy cows. To test the ability to predict pregnancy according to these measurements, milk samples were collected from (i) pregnant and non-pregnant randomly selected cows, (ii) weekly from selected cows (n = 12) before insemination until a positive pregnancy test, and (iii) daily from selected cows (n = 10) prior to insemination unti...

Maternal nutrition and fetal imprinting of the male progeny
Anim Reprod Sci. 2024 Apr 4;265:107470. doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2024.107470. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global population as well as the demand for human food is rapidly growing worldwide, which necessitates improvement of efficiency in livestock operations. In this context, environmental factors during fetal and/or neonatal life have been observed to influence normal physical and physiological function of an individual during adulthood, and this phenomenon is called fetal or developmental programming. While numerous studies have reported the impact of maternal factors on development of the female progeny, limite...

Prenatal acetaminophen exposure and the developing ovary: time, dose, and course consequences for fetal mice
In this study, we established a PAcE Kunming mouse model at different time (middle pregnancy and third trimester), doses (low, middle, high) and courses (single or multi-) to systematically investigate their effects on fetal ovarian development. The findings indicated PAcE affected ovarian development, reduced fetal ovarian oocyte number and inhibited cell proliferation. A reduction in mRNA expression was observed for genes associated with oocyte markers (NOBOX and Figlα), follicular development markers (BMP15 and GDF9), and pre-granulosa cell steroid synthase (SF1 and StAR). Notably, exposure in middle pregnancy, high do...

Polymeric optical fiber biosensor with PAMAM dendrimer-based surface modification and PlGF detection for pre-eclampsia diagnosis
Biosens Bioelectron. 2024 Apr 18;257:116312. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2024.116312. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPre-eclampsia (PE) is a life-threatening complication that occurs during pregnancy, affecting a large number of pregnant women and newborns worldwide. Rapid, on-site and affordable screening of PE at an early stage is necessary to ensure timely treatment and minimize both maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates. Placental growth factor (PlGF) is an angiogenic blood biomarker used for PE diagnosis. Herein, we report the plasmonic fiber optic absorbance biosensor (P-FAB) strategy for detecting PlGF at femto...

Stressful life events and prenatal representations of the child
Attach Hum Dev. 2024 Apr 24:1-17. doi: 10.1080/14616734.2024.2345242. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCaregivers' mental representations of their children can be assessed prenatally and are prospectively associated with later caregiving quality and caregiver-child attachment. Compared to balanced, distorted or disengaged representations are linked to insecure caregiver-child attachments. The present study explored factors (i.e. stressful life experiences and positive experiences) that may be linked to risk for distorted and disengaged representations. We used a brief version of the Prenatal Working Model of the Child Intervi...

High prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance in escherichia coli strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases isolated from faeces and urine of pregnant women with acute cystitis
CONCLUSION: This study revealed a high rate of resistance to the quinolone nalidixic acid and a widespread distribution of PMQR genes in MDR E. coli strains producing ESBLs. The strains represented virulence factors and phylogenetic group B2 are closely associated with abundance in UTI and faeces. However, the predominant clones in faeces were not found in UTIs and it is possible that rep-PCR is not sufficiently discriminating clones.PMID:38656625 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09491-9 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Urinary Silicon Excretion in Relation to Lactation and Bone Mineral Density - a Longitudinal Study Post-partum
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04175-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSilicon (Si) may be a mineral beneficial for bone health. Pregnancy and lactation have major impacts on maternal bone metabolism as bone minerals, including calcium (Ca), are required for growth of the foetus and for milk production. Like urinary Ca excretion, Si excretion has been reported to be high in pregnant women, but there are no data post-partum and during lactation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the urinary excretion of Si (U-Si), from the third trimester of pregnancy until 18 months post-partum, and ...
