Masqueraded sebaceous gland carcinoma of the lower eyelid in a  young pregnant patient
Wien Klin Wochenschr. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s00508-024-02349-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this case report is to present misdiagnosed sebaceous gland carcinoma of the lower eyelid with rapid growth in a young woman during pregnancy. Eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma is a relatively rare tumor and a disease primarily of older patients. It occurs more commonly in oriental populations and with a predilection for the upper eyelid. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment may help improve disease control and patient survival.PMID:38634909 | DOI:10.1007/s00508-024-02349-x (Source: Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift)

Thyroid hormone deficiency affects anxiety-related behaviors and expression of hippocampal glutamate transporters in male congenital hypothyroid rat offspring
Horm Behav. 2024 Apr 17;162:105548. doi: 10.1016/j.yhbeh.2024.105548. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThyroid hormones are crucial for brain development and their deficiency during fetal and postnatal periods can lead to mood and cognitive disorders. We aimed to examine the consequences of thyroid hormone deficiency on anxiety-related behaviors and protein expression of hippocampal glutamate transporters in congenital hypothyroid male offspring rats. Possible beneficial effects of treadmill exercise have also been examined. Congenital hypothyroidism was induced by adding propylthiouracil (PTU) to drinking water of pregnant W...

An unfavorable and a successful pregnancy outcome during and after treatment of gamma heavy chain disease
Int J Hematol. 2024 Apr 18. doi: 10.1007/s12185-024-03769-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGamma heavy chain disease (gHCD) is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder that mostly occurs after childbearing age. Here we report the first case of gHCD in a pregnant patient that was diagnosed in the second trimester, and another pregnancy in the same patient after initial treatment for gHCD. The former pregnancy ended in intrauterine fetal death, believed to be caused by insufficient maternal blood flow due to multiple placental infarcts. The latter pregnancy course was uneventful. Although we cannot rule out the possibility...

Anti-D immunization after D positive platelet transfusions in D negative recipients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
DISCUSSION: Anti-D immunization is low after D incompatible platelet transfusions and dependent on recipients' sex and platelet source. We propose anti-D prophylaxis in girls and women, capable of becoming pregnant in the future, that received D+ platelets, regardless of platelet source, to reduce the risk of anti-D induced hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn.PMID:38634345 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17833 (Source: Transfusion)

Genetic Causal Relationship Between Alanine Aminotransferase Levels and Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Mendelian Randomization Analysis Based on Two Samples
Twin Res Hum Genet. 2024 Apr 18:1-5. doi: 10.1017/thg.2024.16. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a frequent complication of pregnancy. The specific mechanisms underlying GDM have not yet been fully elucidated. Contemporary research indicates a potential association between liver enzyme irregularities and an increased risk of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is recognized as a sensitive marker of liver injury. An increase in ALT levels is hypothesized to be linked to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and diabetes. Nonetheless, the defin...

Joint Effects of Indoor Air Pollution and Maternal Psychosocial Factors During Pregnancy on Trajectories of Early Childhood Psychopathology
CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal exposure to environmental pollutants and psychosocial factors was associated with internalizing and externalizing child behavior trajectories. Understanding joint effects of adverse exposure mixtures will facilitate targeted interventions to prevent childhood psychopathology.PMID:38634620 | DOI:10.1093/aje/kwae046 (Source: Am J Epidemiol)

Inflammatory, Metabolic and Endothelial Biomarkers Before and After Pregnancy Complications
Am J Epidemiol. 2024 Apr 17:kwae053. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwae053. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWomen with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and preterm birth (PTB) have excess cardiovascular disease compared to those with uncomplicated births, perhaps related to pre-pregnancy inflammation, dysmetabolism or endothelial dysfunction. We included 1238 women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study (1985-2011) with 2215 births classified according to outcomes (term, uncomplicated births were the referent). Repeated measures ANOVA estimated pre-pregnancy, post-preg...

Heat-Related Emergency Department Visits - United States, May-September 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 Apr 18;73(15):324-329. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7315a1.ABSTRACTUnprecedented heat waves can affect all persons, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. Many regions of the United States experienced record-breaking high temperatures in 2023, with populations exposed to extremely high temperatures for prolonged periods. CDC examined emergency department (ED) visits associated with heat-related illness (HRI) from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program and compared daily HRI ED visi...

Vitamin D status of pregnant women with obesity in the United Kingdom and its association with pregnancy outcomes: a secondary analysis of the UPBEAT study
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 18:1-28. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000862. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrenatal vitamin D deficiency is widely reported and may affect perinatal outcomes. In this secondary analysis of the UK Pregnancies Better Eating and Activity Trial (UPBEAT), we examined vitamin D status and its relationship with selected pregnancy outcomes in women with obesity (BMI≥30kg/m2) from multi-ethnic inner-city settings in the UK. Determinants of vitamin D status at a mean of 17±1 weeks' gestation were assessed using multivariable linear regression and reported as percent differences in serum hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D)....

Preconception diet in adolescence and its association with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and preterm birth. Results from The HUNT study
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 18:1-22. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000746. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOur aim was to estimate associations of adolescent dietary patterns and meal habits with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and preterm birth. We used data from a prospective cohort study (Norwegian Young-HUNT1) where dietary information was collected during adolescence and pregnancy outcomes were obtained through record linkage to the Norwegian national birth registry. The outcomes were HDP, hypertension, preeclampsia/ eclampsia, and preterm birth in the first pregnancy and in any pregnancy. Diet was self-reported from valida...

Warfarin dosage in a postpartum woman while breastfeeding: A case report
AbstractWarfarin is the only oral anticoagulant recommended in women who are breastfeeding. Although warfarin is a compatible and recommended agent in the postpartum period and during lactation, little is known regarding changes to warfarin dose requirements in this patient population. Here, we report the case of a 40-year-old woman who transitioned from enoxaparin monotherapy back to warfarin at 2  months postpartum, while she was breastfeeding. Despite resuming warfarin at her previously therapeutic dose, her international normalized ratio (INR) remained subtherapeutic and required multiple dose increases. She ultimate...
