Safety evaluation of single-sperm cryopreservation technique applied in intracytoplasmic sperm injection
Zygote. 2024 Apr 17:1-8. doi: 10.1017/S0967199424000078. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique that directly injects a single sperm into the cytoplasm of mature oocytes. Here, we explored the safety of single-sperm cryopreservation applied in ICSI. This retrospective study enrolled 186 couples undergoing ICSI-assisted pregnancy. Subjects were allocated to the fresh sperm (group A)/single-sperm cryopreservation (group B) groups based on sperm type, with their clinical baseline/pathological data documented. We used ICSI-compliant sperm for subsequent in vitro fertilization and f...

Hypertensive Pregnancy Supports Higher Adaptation of Stress Over Anemic Pregnancy: A Pilot Study
This study targets relative stress adaptation in pregnancy between hypertension and anemia. This study has been conducted on three types of pregnancies viz. regular, hypertensive and anemic pregnancy. The data obtained were compared against normal healthy controls. Bloo d pressure was monitored to label hypertensive pregnancy. Lipid profile was the severity marker for hypertensive subjects. Low hemoglobin and MCV levels were used as marker for anemia. Glycemic profile was verified by plasma glucose concentration to exclude diabetic subjects. BMI was calculated to e xclude obesity. Commercially available ELISA based kits we...

Feasibility and reliability of fetal two dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography at 16 weeks gestational age: A pilot study
ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate that fetal 2D-STE analysis at 16 weeks gestational age is feasible when adhering to a strict protocol. However, further improvements are necessary to enhance the inter- and intra-operator reliability of 2D-STE at this gestational age. (Source: PLoS One)

Peri-implantitis with a potential axis to brain inflammation: an inferential review
This study found similarities between PI and PD development, maintenance, and in the bacterial agents located around the teeth (periodontitis) or dental implants (peri-implantitis). Through the cardiovascular system, these pathologies may also affect blood-brain barrier permeability. Furthermore, scientific evidence has suggested that microorganisms from PI (as in PD) can be recognized by trigeminal fiber endings and start inflammatory responses into the trigeminal ganglion. In addition, bacteria can traverse from the mouth to the brain through the lymphatic system. Consequently, the immune system increases inflammatory me...

Aspirin versus metformin in pregnancies at high risk of preterm pre-eclampsia in China (AVERT): protocol for a multicentre, double-blind, 3-arm randomised controlled trial
This study will compare the incidence of preterm-PE with delivery at <37 weeks’ gestation, as the primary outcome, of three different interventional groups: (1) aspirin 75 mg daily, (2) aspirin 150 mg daily and (3) aspirin 75 mg with metformin 1.5 g daily. 957 participants per treatment group are required to detect a significant difference of 59% in the reduction of the incidence of preterm-PE with 80% power and type I error of 5%. Pregnancy and neonatal outcomes will be collected and analysed. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Joint Chinese University of Hong Kong&ndas...

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder stimulant trial in children: an N-of-1 pilot trial to compare stimulant to placebo (FASST): protocol
Introduction Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy. FASD is associated with neurodevelopmental deviations, and 50%–94% of children with FASD meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There is a paucity of evidence around medication efficacy for ADHD symptoms in children with FASD. This series of N-of-1 trials aims to provide pilot data on the feasibility of conducting N-of-1 trials in children with FASD and ADHD. Methods and analysis...

Gitelman syndrome and in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer: advancing preconception care in nephrology
In conclusion, preconception care and cooperation between internal medicine and obstetrics led to an excellent and successful delivery of an IVF fetus in an older patient with GS. There are no guidelines for electrolyte disorders in pregnancy, and only a few studies have reported on GS during pregnancy, including detailed postpartum assessments. (Source: CEN Case Reports)
