Update on diabetic retinopathy during pregnancy
Eur J Ophthalmol. 2024 May 6:11206721241248868. doi: 10.1177/11206721241248868. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiabetes mellitus (DM) leads to several vascular and neurological complications, including diabetic retinopathy (DR). As the population ages, health problems in certain groups, including children and pregnant women, are drawing more and more attention. Pregnancy is one of the independent risk factors for the development and progression of DR. Pregnancy-induced changes may contribute to or worsen DR, which can cause a tremendous burden on public health. It is essential for pregnant women with DR and their offspring ...

Prenatal restraint stress affects early neurobehavioral response and oxidative stress in mice pups
This study aims to identify the harmful effects of prenatal restraint stress (PRS), commonly employed to induce stress painlessly and without any lasting debilitation during gestation. This stress is applied to pregnant Swiss albino mice from E7.5 to delivery for three hours daily. Our results show that PS affects dams' weight gain during the gestational period; moreover, the PS dams prefer passive nursing, exhibit a lower percentage of licking and grooming, and impair other maternal behaviors, including nesting and pup retrieval. Concerning the offspring, this stress induces neurobehavioral impairments, including a signif...

Pharmacological induction of diabetes mellitus in pregnant female mice: a comparison of two doses and routes of administration
CONCLUSIONS: The administration of a single dose of 230 mg/kg of weight by subcutaneous route supposes advantages compared to previously used models since it decreases the physiological stress due to manipulation and the costs since it does not require repeated doses or adjuvants such as high lipid diets to potentiate the diabetogenic effect of STZ.GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT: https://www.europeanreview.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/Graphical-abstract-12.jpg.PMID:38708486 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202404_36056 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)

Dilemmas concerning the course of pregnancy in patients with anorexia nervosa considering hormonal and somatic parameters
Endokrynol Pol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.5603/ep.99255. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMental anorexia nervosa is a rare, potentially severe, chronic, and recurrent mental disorder that occurs more often in women than in men, especially during the childbearing years. The disorder is associated with an increased risk of mortality, mainly related to the physical consequences of severe malnutrition and suicide. Malnutrition of the body can cause serious hormonal and somatic problems. Despite significant hormonal disturbances that reduce fertility, a woman with anorexia can become pregnant. A new phenomenon now seen with increasing ...

Pregnancy-induced oxidative stress and inflammation are not associated with impaired maternal neuronal activity or memory function
Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1152/ajpregu.00026.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnancy is associated with neural and behavioral plasticity, systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Yet, the impact of inflammation and oxidative stress on maternal neural and behavioral plasticity during pregnancy are unclear. We hypothesized that healthy pregnancy transiently reduces learning and memory, and these deficits are associated with pregnancy-induced elevations in inflammation and oxidative stress. Cognitive performance was tested using novel object recognition (recollective memory), Morris...

Gonadotropin elevation is ootoxic to ovulatory oocytes and inhibits oocyte maturation, and activin decoy receptor ActRIIB:Fc therapeutically restores maturation
CONCLUSIONS: FSH ootoxicity to ovulatory oocytes and FSH maturation inhibition pose a paradox given the well-known pro-growth and pro-maturation activities of FSH in the earlier stages of oocyte growth. We propose the FOOT Hypothesis ("FSH OoToxicity Hypothesis), that FSH ootoxicity to ovulatory oocytes comprises a new driver of infertility and low pregnancy success rates in DOR women attempting spontaneous pregnancy and in COS/IUI patients, especially AMA women. We speculate that endogenous FSH elevation also contributes to reduced fecundity in these DOR and COS/IUI patients. Restoration of oocyte maturation by ActRIB:Fc ...

Inhibitor eradication and treatment for acquired hemophilia A
Expert Rev Hematol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1080/17474086.2024.2352505. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare hemorrhagic autoimmune disorder characterized by autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). In approximately half of the cases AHA does not recognize any cause (idiopathic form), while in the other cases it may be triggered by autoimmune disorders, cancers, drugs, infections, or pregnancy. Besides treating the underlying disorder, specific AHA treatment includes management of bleeding, if necessary, and inhibitor eradication.AREAS COVERED: This narrative review s...

Does proximity to a fertility centre increase the chance of achieving pregnancy in Northeastern Ontario?
CONCLUSION: Living in proximity (<100 km) to NEOWHN increased the likelihood that individuals in Northeastern Ontario would seek fertility services and would achieve pregnancy. Financial constraints and inaccessibility likely play a role in this, but further studies are needed to explain this difference.INTRODUCTION: Le Nord de l'Ontario compte une population d'environ 800,000 personnes réparties sur 806,707 km2. Avant 2018, le seul centre de traitement de la fertilité du Nord de l'Ontario était situé à Thunder Bay; de nombreux patients SE rendaient dans le sud pour recevoir des soins. En 2018, le Northeastern Onta...
