The importance of combined NGS and MLPA genetic tests for differential diagnosis of Maturity onset diabetes of the young.
CONCLUSION: In our group of MODY patients most variants were found in the GCK gene, followed by variants in HNF1B, NEUROD1 and HNF1A genes. The combined NGS and MLPA based genetic tests presented a comprehensive approach for analyzing patients with suspected MODY diabetes and provided a successful differential diagnosis of MODY subtypes. Vitamin D status including 3-epi-25(OH)D3 among adult patients with thyroid disorders during summer months.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: In the context of pleiotropic vitamin D effects its role has also been investigated in thyroid pathology, in particular autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD). However, available data concerning vitamin D status among Polish adult population are inconclusive. AIM: In the study we investigated vitamin D status and adequacy of supplementation, as well as sunlight exposure during summer months among adult patients with thyroid diseases. The polycystic ovary syndrome: a position statement from the Polish Society of Endocrinology, the Polish Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians, and the Polish Society of Gynaecological Endocrinology.
Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis and therapy still arouse a lot of controversy. Each year brings new information, so, having collected the experience of three scientific societies, we present contemporary recommendations concerning PCOS diagnostics and treat-ment. In adult female diagnosis, we still use the Rotterdam criteria, which is two out of three of the follwing characteristics: a) ovulation abnormality, b) clinical or biochemical hyperandrogenism, and c) polycystic ovaries. In the case of teenagers, diagnostic criteria are as follows: menstruation disturbances two years after menarche and...

Management of Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) in adults - what an endocrinologist needs to know. Recommendations of the Polish Society of Endocrinology and the Polish Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology.
ski A Abstract Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder characterised by a set of phenotypic traits, which include infantile hypotonia, short stature, and morbid obesity. Over the last 12 years, visible progress has been made in medical care management of PWS patients in Poland. Increasing awareness of the disorder in neonatal and paediatric care has led to early identification of the condition in neonates, followed by the institution of an appropriate dietary regime, introduction of physiotherapy, and early-onset recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) treatment. Growth hormone (GH) therapy in Po...

Pharmacotherapy of obesity - state of the art.
Abstract Obesity, which affects about 13% of the world population, results in significant deterioration of health and serious clinical, mainly meta-bolic and cardiovascular complications. Although the basis of therapeutic treatment is behavioural treatment, often non-pharmacological effects do not produce the desired effect. Currently there are several drugs with a safe action profile that improve the effect of treatment (5-10% weight reduction). The aim of the paper is to present the potential of modern pharmacotherapy in the treatment of obesity, in terms of mechanism of action, efficacy, and side effects, in or...

National Program of Severe Growth Hormone Deficiency Treatment in Adults and Adolescents after Completion of Growth Promoting Therapy.
Abstract Growth hormone (GH) has been used in the treatment of short stature in children with GH deficiency (GHD) for 60 years, and for about 30 years also in the treatment of adults with GHD, in whom such treatment is carried out due to metabolic indications. In Poland, GH treatment is reimbursed only in children with GHD, while so far it has not been refunded in adults with GHD. There are two groups of adults (or adolescents after growth completion) with GHD, who require GH therapy: patients with GHD that occurred in childhood (childhood-onset GHD - CO-GHD) and patients with GHD acquired in adulthood (adulthood-...

Chromogranin A and its role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus.
Abstract Chromogranin A is a member of the granin glycoprotein family that is expressed by the endocrine and neuroendocrine cells of different organs. Intracellularly, Chromogranin A contributes to the regulation of secretion, and gives several cleavage products after secretion. Some of its cleavage products modify the hormone functions in autocrine and paracrine ways, while the functions of others have not been fully understood yet. Serum Chromogranin A level is most prominently used in neuroendocrine tumor diagnostics. In addition, recent studies have suggested that Chromogranin A and some of its cleavage produc...

Expression of follicle stimulating hormone receptors in intra-tumoral vasculature and in tumoral cells - the involvement in tumour progression and the perspectives of application in cancer diagnosis and therapy.

However, the ectopic expression of FSHR was recently discovered in intra-tumoral blood vessels endothelia and/or in tumoral cells of many extra-gonadal human tumors (particularly in endocrine tumours). The paper reviews the data concerning the appearance of ectopic FSHR in particular human neoplasms. Adiponectin expression in visceral adiposity is an important determinant of insulin resistance in morbid obesity.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Visceral adiposity is associated with decreased serum adiponectin levels, peripheral resistance to insulin and an increased risk of cardio-metabolic complications. However, the link between adiponectin expression in visceral adipose tissue (VAT), its serum levels and metabolic protection is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the adiponectin gene expression in VAT and clinical and metabolic parameters in patients with severe obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study that included 51 severely obese patients (age 43.24&plus...

Fractionated dosage of radioiodine for the ablation of differentiated thyroid cancer has no impact on survival.
CONCLUSIONS: In the long-term follow-up, radioiodine ablation therapy with fractionated doses in low-risk DTC patients is equally effective as with single dose. PMID: 29504625 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Red cell distribution width - a new marker for exacerbation of heart failure in patients with hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases constitute a major cause of health problems and death in developed countries across the world. The increased value of the index of distribution of red blood cells volume (RDW) may be a prognostic marker in patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure (CHF). Hypothyroid patients present higher RDW values if compared to healthy controls. Taking into consideration that RDW might be both affected by thyroid status and CHF, we decided to determine the effect of concomitant hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy (RIT) and CHF on hematological parameters. Discrimination of papillary thyroid cancer from non-cancerous thyroid tissue based on lipid profiling by mass spectrometry imaging.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results prove the viability of MALDI-MSI for analysis of lipid distribution directly in formalin-fixed tissue, and the potential for their use in the classification of thyroid diseases. PMID: 29492952 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Effects of physical activity on sclerostin concentrations.
CONCLUSIONS: The obtained results emphasise the role of physical training as an effective stimulation method of bone formation processes in women with osteopenia. Sclerostin can be a marker of physical activity. PMID: 29465155 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

The impact of serum adropin and ischemia modified albumin levels based on BMI in PCOS.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and body mass index (BMI) on serum adropin and ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was performed with a total of 120 women [group1; non-PCOS = 60 (BMI
