Novel inflammatory biomarkers may reflect subclinical inflammation in young healthy adults with obesity.
ior M Abstract INTRODUCTION: Obesity is often accompanied by low-grade inflammation. In the last years a few blood-based inflammatory markers - neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) have been identified. They have been proven to correlate well with established inflammatory markers such as hsCRP, and have a prognostic value among others in patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure and malignancies. The aim of the study was to find mark...

Comparison of adipose tissue derived genes in endogenous Cushing's syndrome versus diet-induced obesity.
CONCLUSIONS: No significant differences were found in the expression of the investigated genes known as cardiometabolic risk factors. This indicates that there are no major differences between endogenous hypercortisolism or diet induced obesity regarding the expression of adipokines involved in cardiometabolic disorders. Endocrine implications of obesity and bariatric surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: 1.Hunger and satiety are mediated by an interplay of nervous and endocrine signals. 2. Healthy adipose tissue secretion of adipokines is coordinated in an anti-inflammatory, insulin-sensitizing and cardioprotective pattern. However, with increasing fat mass this secretion pattern is changed into a proinflammatory, insulin resistant, atherogenic and fatal systemic environment . 3. Bariatric surgery is not a solution of the obesity problem for everyone. 4. Long term postsurgical observations of the hormonal profile changes are necessary and should be obligatory. Pharmacotherapy of obesity - state of the art.
Abstract Obesity, which affects about 13% of the world population, results in significant deterioration of health and serious clinical, mainly meta-bolic and cardiovascular complications. Although the basis of therapeutic treatment is behavioural treatment, often non-pharmacological effects do not produce the desired effect. Currently there are several drugs with a safe action profile that improve the effect of treatment (5-10% weight reduction). The aim of the paper is to present the potential of modern pharmacotherapy in the treatment of obesity, in terms of mechanism of action, efficacy, and side effects, in or...

Conclusions Although "silent" gonadotropinomas constitute a frequent subtype of pituitary adenomas, the "active" (i.e. manifesting by gonadotropin excess) are rare (approx. 4% of all pituitary adenomas). Gonadotropinomas are difficult to diagnose before surgery. The measurement of gonadotropins including αSU is needed but often not sufficient for presurgical diagnosis. The relation of pituitary adenomas invasiveness and the proliferative index measured by immunoexpression of topoisomerase II α.
This study evaluates the relation of pituitary adenoma invasiveness to the expression of topoisomerase IIα in 72 patients who underwent transsphenoidal pituitary surgery. The assessment of tumour growth was conducted according to the Hardy scale as modified by Wilson and the Knosp scale. Topoisomerase IIα expression in tumours specimens was evaluated using immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: There was a correlation between the Knosp scale degree and the topoisomerase IIα expression (Spearman R=0.3611, p

Chromogranin A and its role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus.
Abstract Chromogranin A is a member of the granin glycoprotein family that is expressed by the endocrine and neuroendocrine cells of different organs. Intracellularly, Chromogranin A contributes to the regulation of secretion, and gives several cleavage products after secretion. Some of its cleavage products modify the hormone functions in autocrine and paracrine ways, while the functions of others have not been fully understood yet. Serum Chromogranin A level is most prominently used in neuroendocrine tumor diagnostics. In addition, recent studies have suggested that Chromogranin A and some of its cleavage produc...

Study on the relationship between the methylation of the MMP-9 gene promoter region and diabetic nephropathy.
This study aims to explore the relationship between the methylation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 gene promoter region and diabetic nephropathy (DN) through the detection of the methylation level of MMP-9 gene promoter region in the peripheral blood of patients with DN in different periods and serum MMP-9 concentration. METHODS: The methylation level of the MMP-9 gene promoter region was detected by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP), and the content of MMP-9 in serum was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Results of the statistical analysis revealed that ser...
