[Familial isolated pituitary adenomas (FIPA). Case report of four families and review of literature.]
CONCLUSIONS: Familial isolated pituitary adenomas are more common than it was previously thought, therefore, specific questioning regarding family history should be a part of the workup of all patients with pituitary adenomas. Genetically induced pituitary tumors often have aggressive behavior in terms of tumor expansion and resistance to different treatment options and often involve a multidisciplinary approach that combines endocrine, neurosurgical, and radiological specialists. Induction of puberty with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) followed by reversal of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in Kallmann syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with hCG is effective in inducing pubertal development and may have advantage over testosterone replacement due to a potential of gonadal maturation. A regular assessment of testicular volume and biochemical surveillance including measuring of serum inhibin B and gonadotropins are necessary for a timely detection of reversal of GnRH deficiency. The role of selenium in thyroid gland pathophysiology.
Abstract It is now assumed that proper functioning of the thyroid gland (TG), beside iodine, requires also a number of elements, including selenium, iron, zinc, copper, and calcium. In many cases, only an adequate supply of one of these microelements (e.g. iodine) may reveal symptoms resulting from deficits of other microelements (e.g. iron or selenium). Selenium is accounted to the trace elements of key importance for homeostasis of the human system, in particular, for the proper functioning of the immune system and the TG. Results of epidemiological studies have demonstrated that selenium deficit may affect as m...

Successful EUS-guided ethanol ablation of insulinoma, four-year follow-up. Case report and literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: The EUS-guided alcoholic ablation of insulinoma is a safe and effective method of treatment in patients who are poor surgical candidates and/or refuse surgery. The adverse effects are rare and mild and were observed when the volume of injected ethanol was equal to or above 3.0 ml. However, the data is limited, the follow-up is relatively short, and prospective studies are needed to confirm the long-term effects of treatment. The study shows also that there are important procedural differences (concentration and volume of alcohol, needle gauge, number of sessions) between the endoscopists, which should be speci...

Insulin resistance in endocrine disorders - treatment options.
icz D Abstract Changes in sensitivity to insulin occur in the course of a number of endocrine disorders. Most of the hormones through their antagonistic action to insulin lead to increased hepatic glucose output and its decreased utilisation in peripheral tissues. Carbohydrate disorders observed in endocrine diseases result from the phenomenon of insulin resistance, and in some cases also a reduction in insulin secretion is present. Abnormalities of glucose metabolism are observed in acromegaly, but also in growth hormone deficiency, hypercortisolism in the course of Cushing's syndrome, hyper- or hypothyroidism, p...

The usefulness of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in the treatment of adrenal neoplasms - a single-centre experience.
CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a safe and effective method of treatment of adrenal tumours. Its oncological completeness is comparable (to open surgery) when performed by experienced surgical teams. Laparoscopy is the reason for the smooth postoperative course observed in most patients. Minimally invasive radioguided parathyroid surgery using low dose Tc-99m-MIBI: comparison with standard high dose.
CONCLUSIONS: A new protocol of MIRP using low doses of Tc-99m-MIBI resulted in an excellent success rate. Comparing results of the study, we conclude that low-dose Tc-99m-MIBI may be preferred for identification of parathyroid adenomas intraoperatively by means of a gamma probe in PHPT patients because it appears to be as effective as high-dose Tc-99m-MIBI. Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms - management guidelines (recommended by the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours).
This article presents updated diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for the management of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PNEN), proposed by the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours. The guidelines contain new data received in the years 2013-2016, which confirm previous recommendations, and have led to modification of previous guidelines or have resulted in the formulation of new guidelines. Biochemical and imaging (anatomical and functional) tests are of great importance in diagnostics, as well as histopathological diagnosis to determine the management of PNEN patients, but they must be confirmed by an immunohistoc...

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the small intestine and appendix - management guidelines (recommended by the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours).
This study presents the revised Polish guidelines regarding the management of patients suffering from neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the small intestine and appendix. The small intestine, especially the ileum, is the most common location for these neoplasms. Most are well differentiated and slow growing. Their symptoms may be atypical, which can result in delayed or accidental diagnosis. Appendicitis is usually the first manifestation of NEN in this location. Typical symptoms of carcinoid syndrome occur in approximately 20-30% of patients suffering from small intestinal NENs with distant metastases. The main cause of d...

Comparison of leukocyte IL6 expression in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnosed by the Polish Diabetes Association (PDA) 2011 and 2014 criteria.
CONCLUSIONS: Differences in GDM criteria can affect misinterpretation of results concerning metabolic phenotypes of patients, gene expression data and statistical associations. Relationship of leukocyte IL6 gene expression with glucose metabolism during pregnancy was found. PMID: 28353315 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Thyroid lesions in patients with acromegaly - case-control study and update to the meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: According to our results thyroid lesions were significantly more common in patients with acromegaly; in case of TC the difference was not significant. The updated meta-analysis showed significantly increased prevalence of both disorders. In conclusion, systematic thyroid examination should be an important part of follow-up in case of acromegalic patients. (Endokrynol Pol 2017; 68 (1): 2-6). The relationship between lipocalin-2 and free testosterone levels in polycystic ovary syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: Serum lipocalin-2 levels were higher in women with PCOS, and only free testosterone was associated with lipocalin-2. Lipocalin-2 levels and their influencing factors have discrepant results in both PCOS and other obesity- or insulin resistance-related metabolic disorders. Thus, the potential role of lipocalin-2 in PCOS should be clarified. (Endokrynol Pol 2017; 68 (1): 7-12). PMID: 28255975 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)
