Assessment of OPG, RANKL, bone turnover markers serum levels and BMD after treatment with strontium ranelate and ibandronate in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Both ibandronate and SR do not seem to cause any significant changes in OPG and RANKL protein serum levels during the first 6 months of treatment. OPG may play a role in osteoclast activity suppression in the course of treatment with ibandronate in patients with PO. OPG may play an important role in the mechanism of SR therapy and may be viewed as a potentially valuable parameter for monitoring and predicting the course of treatment with SR in PO. The evaluation of lipid profile in patients with metabolic syndrome according to the cardiovascular risk calculated on the basis of SCORE chart.
CONCLUSIONS: Increased CV risk in this group of patients may be associated not only with higher TC level, but also the other lipid fractions. The assessment of the CV risk on the basis of the SCORE chart, which includes only TC level, may be inadequate. A modification of the SCORE chart for the European population should be considered (inclusion of LDL-C level, or in the selected cases, non-HDL-C level, instead of TC level). The role of melatonin membrane receptors in melatonin-dependent oxytocin secretion from the rat hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system - an in vitro and in vivo approach.
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that an inhibitory effect of 10⁻⁷ M melatonin on oxytocin secretion from the rat H-N system is mediated through a subtype MT₁ membrane receptor and its action is rather independent of subtype MT₂ receptor. However, for the stimulatory effect of pharmacological concentration (10⁻³ M) of the pineal hormone on oxytocin release, probably other than membrane MT₁/MT₂ receptor(s)-dependent mechanisms are involved. Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis in patients with liver metastases from follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC).
Abstract Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common type of thyroid cancer (TC) and accounts for approximately 10 percent of all TC cases. Liver metastases are rare presentation in 0.5-1% of follicular thyroid cancers, usually occur in the setting of widely disseminated FTC disease and their presence is associated with poor prognosis. Until now, there are only 30 cases of FTC liver metastases described in the literature. Hereby, we review publications and describe diagnostic tools, which may be used in the diagnosis and follow-up of FTC metastases to the liver including biopsy, imaging techniques...

Comparison of the usefulness of post-ablative and post-operative thyroglobulin concentration measuring in prognostic assessment of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: No differences in clinical usefulness of the assessment of TgPO and stimulated TgPA concentrations as indicators of good prognosis were found. However, TgPA allows anticipation of remission of the disease with higher sensitivity. It also appears that TgPA may be of particular prognostic importance in baseline high-risk patients (pT3-T4/N1). A sufficiently low TgPA concentration, demonstrating good response to 131I adjuvant therapy in these groups, is an indicator of improved prognosis. (Endokrynol Pol 2015; 66 (6): 486-494). Association between omentin-1, bone metabolism markers, and cytokines of the RANKL/RANK/OPG system in girls with anorexia nervosa.
CONCLUSIONS: The relationship between omentin-1, bone markers, and the OC/CTx and OPG/sRANKL ratios observed in girls with AN indicates the involvement of this adipokine in the regulation of dynamic balance between bone formation and resorption processes. Omentin-1 might exert a negative effect on bone remodelling in girls with AN by inhibiting both bone formation and resorption. The OPG/sRANKL system plays an important role in the latter. The role of kisspeptin signalling in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis - current perspective.
Abstract The discovery of kisspeptins in the recent past remoulded current understanding of the neuroendocrine axis relating to the regulation of human puberty and reproduction. Kisspeptins have been recognised to act upstream of GnRH and have been shown to play a vital role in the control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis via regulation of gonadotrophin secretion, onset of puberty, and control of fertility. KNDy (kisspeptin/neurokinin-B/dynorphin) neurons have been suggested to modulate GnRH pulsatile secretion, which is required to support reproductive function in both sexes. They have also been involve...

An assessment of the effectiveness of iodine prophylaxis in pregnant women - analysis in one of reference gynaecological-obstetric centres in Poland.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: Iodine deficiency in pregnant women, even of a mild degree, may have adverse effects on both the mother and the foetus. Despite the obligatory model of functioning iodine prophylaxis in Poland, the iodine supply in women during pregnancy and physiological lactation is insufficient. Therefore, those groups should take additional iodine supplementation at a dose of 150-200 μg/day. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of iodine prophylaxis in pregnant women in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The assessment of iodine supply, urine iodine concentration (UIC) in the spot ur...

Possibilities of surgical correction of vocal cord palsy after thyroid gland operations.
CONCLUSIONS: Ossoff 's laser arytenoidectomy with posterior cordectomy is a safe procedure that gives acceptable ventilation improvement. Patients report satisfactory quality of life and the possibility of returning to active professional life. Laterofixation should be considered as an alternative for tracheotomy rather than permanent procedure. (Endokrynol Pol 2015; 66 (5): 412-416). Assessment of operative treatment of patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism after kidney transplantation.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study was to assess the results of operative treatment of patients with tertiary hyperparathyroidism (tHPT) after kidney transplantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 30 patients in whom kidney transplantation was performed between 2006 and 2013, and in whom parathyroidectomy had to be performed at a later time because of tHPT. There were 17 (56.7%) women and 13 (43,3%) men in the group, aged 18-64, mean 46.1 years. In order to locate the lesion before the operation, all patients had to undergo USG, and 14 had scintigraphy MIBI in addition. Serum levels of...

The effect of hypothyroidism occurring in patients with metabolic syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: In view of the above, it may be hypothesized that in patients with both MetS and hypothyroidism, especially of male gender, the risk of death of cardiovascular causes is greater due to the severity of MetS components. Moreover, we suggest that in patients recently diagnosed with MetS, active detection of hypothyroidism should be performed by determining the TSH levels, while patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism (apart from replacement therapy) should be monitored for the possible occurrence of MetS in the future.
