Severe cellulitis from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a couple of preterm twins: a case report
ConclusionsDue to the characteristic antibiotic resistance of MRSA and the potential complications of those infections in such delicate patients, basic prevention measures still represent the key to avoid the spreading of neonatal MRSA infections in NICUs, which include hand hygiene and strict precautions, as well as screening of patients for MRSA on admission and during hospital stay, routine prophylactic topical antibiotic of patients, enhanced environmental cleaning, cohorting and isolation of positive patients, barrier precautions, avoidance of ward crowding, and, in some units, surveillance, education and decolonizati...

Oleanolic acid: an antimycobacterial component of < em > Syzygium aromaticum < /em > L. and inhibitor of efflux mediated drug resistance
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 18:1-7. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2343916. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOleanolic acid (OA) was isolated from Syzygium aromaticum L. buds, and structurally characterised using different spectroscopic techniques; MS, IR,1H/13C-NMR and 2D NMR experiments. The antimycobacterial activity according to a resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) showed important inhibitory effect of OA on the virulent H37Rv strain, with the lowest minimum concentration of 50 µg/mL, compared to other fractions. Molecular docking of OA with BacA drug efflux pump resulted in good binding affinity of hydrophobic interaction type. T...

Interaction of selected alkoxy naringenin oximes with model and bacterial membranes
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 16;174:116581. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116581. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNaringenin is a flavonoid found in many fruits and herbs, most notably in grapefruits. In recent years, this compound and its derivatives have been of great interest due to their high biological activity, including fungicidal and bactericidal effects, also in relation to multidrug-resistant bacteria. Membrane interactions of naringenin oxime (NO) and its 7-O-alkyl (7-alkoxy) derivatives, such as methyl (7MENO), ethyl (7ETNO), isopropyl (7IPNO), n-butyl (7BUNO) and n-pentyl (7PENO) were studied. Thermotropic propert...

Identification, prioritization, and evaluation of RlpA protein as a target against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Acta Trop. 2024 Apr 16;255:107216. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107216. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAccording to the World Health Organization, infectious diseases, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR), are projected to claim the lives of 15 million people by 2050. Septicemia carries a higher morbidity and mortality rate than infections caused by susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and MDR-mediated ocular infections can lead to impaired vision and blindness. To identify and develop a potential drug against MDR P. aeruginosa, we employed in silico reverse genetics-based target mining, drug pr...

Multidrug-resistant pathogens and ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients: a prospective observational monocentric comparative study
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 patients with VAP appear to have a significantly higher ICU and in-hospital mortality risk regardless of the presence of MDR and DTR pathogens. Tracheostomy and a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation appear to be associated with better outcomes.PMID:38637766 | PMC:PMC11027225 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02779-1 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Detoxification of tetracycline and synthetic dyes by a newly characterized Lentinula edodes laccase, and safety assessment using proteomic analysis
This study showed that the extracellular fungal laccase from L. edodes could effectively degrade tetracycline (TET) and the synthetic dye Acid Green 25 (AG). The growth inhibition of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis by TET revealed that the antimicrobial activity was significantly reduced after treatment with the laccase-HBT system. 16 transformation products of TET were identified by UPLC-MS-TOF during the laccase-HBT oxidation process. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that LeLac12 could completely mineralize ring-cleavage products. LeLac12 completely catalyzed 50 mg/L TET within 4 h by...
