Spiritual Holy Water Sites in Ethiopia: Unrecognized High-Risk Settings for Transmission of Pulmonary Tuberculosis
This study examined the prevalence of pulmonary TB (PTB) and drug susceptibility profiles of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates among spiritual HWS attendees in Northwest Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2019 to March 2020. Sputum samples were collected, processed, and cultured using Löwenstein-Jensen (LJ) culture medium. Second-generation line probe assays (LPAs), GenoType®MTBDRplus VER2.0 and GenoType®MTBDRsl VER2.0, were used to detect anti-TB drug-resistant isolates. STATA 17 was utilized to perform descriptive statistics, bivariate, and multivariate regression analyses. Of 560 PTB-sy...

A systematic evaluation of population pharmacokinetic models for polymyxin B in patients with liver and/or kidney dysfunction
This study aimed to systemically evaluate eleven PMB PopPK models from ten published literature based on a new independent population, which was divided into four different populations, patients with liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, liver and kidney dysfunction, and normal liver and kidney function. The whole data set consisted of 146 patients with 391 PMB concentrations. The prediction- and simulation-based diagnostics and Bayesian forecasting were conducted to evaluate model predictability. In the overall evaluation process, none of the models exhibited satisfactory predictive ability in both prediction- and simula...

Prevalence and genetic characteristics of  Staphylococcus aureus isolates from cell phones of medical students from Iran
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1556/030.2024.02193. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough mobile phones as a rapid communication vehicle can lead to improved quality of healthcare, they can also facilitate the transmission of pathogens to patients. This current research focuses on genetic diversity, and genes involved in resistance and biofilm production of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from mobile phones of medical students. Antibiotic resistance profiling and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of antibiotic resistance and biofilm-related genes were investigated and statistically analyzed. ...

Historical trajectories of antibiotics resistance genes assessed through sedimentary DNA analysis of a subtropical eutrophic lake
In this study, we investigated the vertical change patterns of bacterial communities, ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) found in sediments of Lake Chenghai spanning the past 600 years. Within resistome preserved in sediments, 177 ARGs subtypes were found with aminoglycosides and multidrug resistance being the most abundant. The ARG abundance in the upper sediment layers (equivalent to the post-antibiotic era since the 1940s) was lower than those during the pre-antibiotic era, whereas the ARG diversity was higher during the post-antibiotic era, possibly because human-induced lake eutrophication over the recent decades...
