Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1685: Phenylspirodrimane with Moderate Reversal Effect of Multidrug Resistance Isolated from the Deep-Sea Fungus Stachybotrys sp. 3A00409
en Zhiqiang Zhang Two new phenylspirodrimanes, stachybotrins K and L (1 and 2), together with eight known analogues (3–10), were isolated from deep-sea-derived Stachybotrys sp. MCCC 3A00409. Their structures were determined by extensive NMR data and mass spectroscopic analysis. Absolute configurations of new compounds were determined through a comparison of their circular dichroism (CD) spectra with other reported compounds. The possible reversal effects of all compounds were assayed in the resistant cancer cell lines. Stachybotrysin B (8) can reverse multidrug resistance (MDR) in ABCB1-overexpression c...

GSE249483 Antibacterial activities of the algal bromophenol methylrhodomelol against Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Contributors : Joshua Jacobtorweihen ; Anja Hartmann ; Stefanie Hofer ; Verena SpieglerSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Pseudomonas aeruginosaMethylrhodomelol (1) is a bromophenol from the red alga Vertebrata lanosa (L.) T.A.Christensen that has been associated with antimicrobial properties. Aim of the current study was therefore, to assess the antimicrobial potential of this compound in more detail against the gram-negative pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 1 exerted weak bacteriostatic activity against different strains when grown in minimal medium, whereas other phenolics wer...

Endophytes: a uniquely tailored source of potential antibiotic adjuvants
Arch Microbiol. 2024 Apr 6;206(5):207. doi: 10.1007/s00203-024-03891-y.ABSTRACTMultidrug microbial resistance is risking an annual loss of more than 10 million people' lives by 2050. Solutions include the rational use of antibiotics and the use of drugs that reduce resistance or completely obliterate them. Here endophytes come to play due to their high-yield production and inherent nature to produce antimicrobial molecules. Around 40%, 45% and 17% of antibacterial agents were obtained from fungi, actinomycetes, and bacteria, respectively, whose secondary metabolites revealed effectiveness against resistant microbes such as...

Neonatal < em > Elizabethkingia anophelis < /em > meningitis originating from the water reservoir of an automated infant milk dispenser, the Netherlands, February 2024
We report a Dutch case of E. anophelis meningitis in a neonate, clonally related to samples taken from an automated infant milk dispenser located at the family's residence. We inform about the emergence of E. anophelis and suggest molecular surveillance in hospitals and other health settings. This is the first case connecting an automated formula dispenser to an invasive infection in a neonate.PMID:38577802 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.14.2400177 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in Patients with Vaginal Discharge: A 2019-2022 Analysis at the National Health Laboratory in Eritrea
CONCLUSION: Most gram-negative bacteria displayed higher resistance of >45% to ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline. Among gram-positive bacteria, a higher resistance rate with ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxacillin, vancomycin, and penicillin G was recorded. S. aureus showed no resistance to rifampicin and clindamycin, and Strep. spp. indicated 100% resistance to rifampicin and vancomycin. This study highlights critical gaps and areas for further exploration. Expanding the spectrum of antibiotics tested and investigating underlying multidrug resistance mechanisms would...

Cryo-EM structure of P-glycoprotein bound to triple elacridar inhibitor molecules
In this study, we have obtained a higher resolution (2.5 Å) structure of the P-gp- Fab (UIC2) complex bound by three elacridar molecules. This finding, which exposes a larger space for compound-binding sites than previously acknowledged, has significant implications for the development of more selective inhibitors and enhances our understanding of the compound recognition mechanism of P-gp.PMID:38579618 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbrc.2024.149855 (Source: Biochemical and Biophysical Research communications)
