Assessing the possible association between MTHFR (rs1801133) and GPx-1 (rs1050450) polymorphisms with the risk of type 2 diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy
CONCLUSION: The MTHFR TT genotype increased the risk of neuropathy in diabetic patients significantly. The GPx-1 CT genotype is related to increased retinopathy risk among diabetic patients. Both MTHFR and Gpx-1 TT genotypes were associated with higher BMI levels.PMID:38683407 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09519-0 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

In vitro anti-leukemic effect of Wharton's jelly derived mesenchymal stem cells
CONCLUSIONS: MSCs are known to inhibit the growth of tumors of both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic origin in vitro. In our study, WJ-MSC treatment strongly inhibited the viability of HL-60 and K562 and induced apoptosis. Our results also provided new insights into the inhibition of tumor growth by WJ-MSCs in vitro. In the future, WJ-MSCs could be used to inhibit cancer cells in clinical applications.PMID:38683436 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09512-7 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

From swamp to field: how genes from mangroves and its associates can enhance crop salinity tolerance
Mol Biol Rep. 2024 Apr 29;51(1):598. doi: 10.1007/s11033-024-09539-w.ABSTRACTSalinity stress is a critical challenge in crop production and requires innovative strategies to enhance the salt tolerance of plants. Insights from mangrove species, which are renowned for their adaptability to high-salinity environments, provides valuable genetic targets and resources for improving crops. A significant hurdle in salinity stress is the excessive uptake of sodium ions (Na+) by plant roots, causing disruptions in cellular balance, nutrient deficiencies, and hampered growth. Specific ion transporters and channels play crucial roles ...

Isolation, purification, and biological activities of polysaccharides from < em > Amorpha fruticosa < /em > flowers
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 29:1-8. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2346272. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe extraction, isolation, structural characterisation and biological activities of polysaccharides from Amorpha fruticosa flowers were investigated. First, the crude polysaccharide AFP was extracted, and two major purified polysaccharide fractions AFP-2 and AFP-3 were isolated. The molecular weight and monosaccharide compositions of AFP-2 and AFP-3 were determined. Then the antioxidant activities of AFP, AFP-2 and AFP-3 were assessed by DPPH radical, β-Carotene bleaching and hydroxyl radical assays. All three tested polysacch...

Bacteria in the blood of healthy stray dogs infested by ticks in northern Mexico
CONCLUSION: This research offers relevant information on the prevalence of tick-borne diseases as well as other potential zoonotic diseases in the blood of stray dogs parasitized by ticks in northern Mexico. New molecular biology and massive NGS techniques may play an important role in the study and documentation of bacterial profiles from animals in close proximity to humans.PMID:38680790 | PMC:PMC11055595 | DOI:10.5455/javar.2024.k757 (Source: Adv Data)

Identification of Hub Genes in Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma Based on Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis
Biochem Genet. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s10528-024-10803-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLiver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) is a malignant cancer with high incidence and poor prognosis. To investigate the correlation between hub genes and progression of LIHC and to provided potential prognostic markers and therapy targets for LIHC. Our study mainly used The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) LIHC database and the gene expression profiles of GSE54236 from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) to explore the differential co-expression genes between LIHC and normal tissues. The differential co-expression genes were extracted by Weig...

OSW-1 triggers necroptosis in colorectal cancer cells through the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway facilitated by the RIPK1-p62/SQSTM1 complex
CONCLUSION: We propose that OSW-1 can induce necroptosis through the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway, and that this effect is mediated by the RIPK1-p62/SQSTM1 complex, in CRC cells. These results provide a theoretical foundation for the use of OSW-1 in the clinical treatment of CRC.PMID:38681991 | PMC:PMC11045482 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2155 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Doping yesterday, today, tomorrow: A challenge for the clinical laboratory
Malays J Pathol. 2024 Apr;46(1):1-10.ABSTRACTThis work highlights the role of the clinical laboratory, in the early detection of the use of substances prohibited for doping. This is because most people who practice sports today are non-professional athletes and amateurs, in particular young kids. These persons are not subjected to anti-doping controls but are at risk for their health. Endocrinologists and laboratory tests, by detecting evidence of such usage can help protect their health. Anti-doping testing require specific instruments for qualitative and quantitative chemistry, to meet regulations of official competition...

Not just for lymphoid cells: The role of the noncanonical NF- κB signaling pathway in early and late myelopoiesis with a focus on hypereosinophilic disorders
J Leukoc Biol. 2024 Apr 29:qiae101. doi: 10.1093/jleuko/qiae101. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe noncanonical NF-κB pathway is involved in lymphoid organ development, B cell maturation, and cytokine production. However, new research has demonstrated that this pathway is also key for the orderly and sequential maturation of myeloid cells, including neutrophils and eosinophils. When this pathway is disrupted or constitutively activated, aberrations in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) survival and proliferation, as well as subsequent granulopoiesis and eosinophilopoiesis are affected. Disturbance of such a coo...

Roles of TRPM channels in glioma
Cancer Biol Ther. 2024 Dec 31;25(1):2338955. doi: 10.1080/15384047.2024.2338955. Epub 2024 Apr 29.ABSTRACTGliomas are the most common type of primary brain tumor. Despite advances in treatment, it remains one of the most aggressive and deadly tumor of the central nervous system (CNS). Gliomas are characterized by high malignancy, heterogeneity, invasiveness, and high resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It is urgent to find potential new molecular targets for glioma. The TRPM channels consist of TRPM1-TPRM8 and play a role in many cellular functions, including proliferation, migration, invasion, angiogenesis, etc. ...

A Modular Trial of Androgen Signaling Inhibitor Combinations Testing a Risk-Adapted Strategy in Patients with Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Adding ipilimumab to AAPA did not improve outcomes in men with androgen responsive mCRPC. Despite the addition of carboplatin+cabazitaxel, men in the Unsatisfactory group had shortened survivals.
