USP18 Curbs the Progression of Metabolic Hypertension by Suppressing JAK/STAT Pathway
Cardiovasc Toxicol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1007/s12012-024-09860-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypertension is a pathological state of the metabolic syndrome that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Managing hypertension is challenging, and we aimed to identify the pathogenic factors and discern therapeutic targets for metabolic hypertension (MHR). An MHR rat model was established with the combined treatment of a high-sugar, high-fat diet and ethanol. Histopathological observations were performed using hematoxylin-eosin and Sirius Red staining. Transcriptome sequencing was performed to screen differentially expr...

Update in genetic and epigenetic causes of hypertension
Cell Mol Life Sci. 2024 Apr 30;81(1):201. doi: 10.1007/s00018-024-05220-4.ABSTRACTHypertension is a heritable disease that affects one-fourth of the population and accounts for about 50% of cardiovascular deaths. The genetic basis of hypertension is multifaceted, involving both monogenic and most commonly complex polygenic forms. With the advent of the human genome project, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified a plethora of loci linked to hypertension by examining common genetic variations. It's notable, however, that the majority of these genetic variants do not affect the protein-coding sequences, posin...

The cardiovascular system at high altitude: A bibliometric and visualization analysis
CONCLUSION: Over the past 32 years, research on the cardiovascular system in high-altitude regions has been steadily increasing. Future research in this field may focus on areas such as hypoxia adaptation, metabolism, and cardiopulmonary exercise. Strengthening interdisciplinary and multi-team collaborations will facilitate further exploration of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cardiovascular changes in high-altitude environments and provide a theoretical basis for standardized disease diagnosis and treatment.PMID:38690218 | PMC:PMC11056872 | DOI:10.4330/wjc.v16.i4.199 (Source: World Journal of Cardiology)

Circulating interleukin 17A and other inflammatory proteins may predict cardiovascular disease in early rheumatoid arthritis
CONCLUSION: Circulating IL-17A at RA diagnosis predicted future CVD, although we cannot exclude that this finding is due to multiple testing. The association was independent of traditional CVD risk factors, and of ESR at the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, OPG may be a predictor of CVD. We also identified some novel potential biomarkers for CVD in RA.PMID:38692670 | DOI:10.3899/jrheum.2023-1078 (Source: Journal of Rheumatology)

Genetic and Lifestyle Risk Factors of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease and Its Relationship with Premature Coronary Artery Disease: A Study on the Pars Cohort
CONCLUSION: Our study found that consuming opium decreases the likelihood of MAFLD in CAD patients, since these patients have decreased appetite and lower body mass index (BMI). On the other hand, female gender, having diabetes, high waist circumference, high triglyceride levels, and high ALT levels increase the probability of MAFLD in CAD patients.PMID:38690791 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.36 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

Identifying Risk Indicators of Cardiovascular Disease in Fasa Cohort Study (FACS): An Application of Generalized Linear Mixed-Model Tree
CONCLUSION: Given the superior performance of the GLMM tree compared with the standard tree and the lack of significant difference with the GLMM, using this model is suggested due to its simpler interpretation and fewer assumptions. Using updated statistical models for more accurate CVD prediction can result in more precise frameworks to aid in proactive patient detection planning.PMID:38690790 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.35 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)

Home blood pressure measurement self-reporting in real-life practices using the Hy-Result app: self-monitoring and digital pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our real-life study shows that 90% of the HBPM reports include the required minimum number of BP readings to allow the calculation of a reliable average among whom 40% have uncontrolled BP levels. The self-management Hy-Result web app demonstrates significant potential for inclusion in the patient care process and reinforces the patient's engagement to independently monitor and self-reported their BP. When the mean BP is not within the recommended range, the users were automatically prompted by text messages to seek medical advice by the software. Further research should determine the extent to which users adh...

Impact of age and anterior fibromuscular stroma preservation on post-enucleation voided volume
ConclusionsThe study concludes that intentional preservation of AFS during prostate enucleation positively impacts early postoperative VVs, with limited improvement in older patients. These findings highlight the potential of AFS preservation not only in enhancing urinary outcomes post-surgery but also in shaping future BPH surgical procedures and research directions. Characteristics and outcomes of patients with symptomatic chronic myocardial injury in a Tanzanian emergency department: A prospective observational study
by Faraan O. Rahim, Francis M. Sakita, Lauren A. Coaxum, Godfrey L. Kweka, Zak Loring, Jerome J. Mlangi, Sophie W. Galson, Tumsifu G. Tarimo, Gloria Temu, Gerald S. Bloomfield, Julian T Hertz BackgroundChronic myocardial injury is a condition defined by stably elevated cardiac biomarkers without acute myocardial ischemia. Although studies from high-income countries have reported that chronic myocardial injury predicts adverse prognosis, there are no published data about the condition in sub-Saharan Africa. MethodsBetween November 2020 and January 2023, adult patients with chest pain or shortness of breath were recruited fr...

Choroidal vascularity index as a predictor for the development of retinopathy in diabetic patients
ConclusionsCVI tends to be lower in diabetic patients with or without DR compared to healthy controls. Moreover, patients with DR have a lower CVI than those without DR. CVI can be considered an early and sensitive biomarker for the onset of DR. (Source: Journal of Endocrinological Investigation)

Predictive values of relative fat mass and body mass index on cardiovascular health in community-dwelling older adults: Results from the Longevity Check-up (Lookup) 7+
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and non-communicable diseases worldwide [1,2]. Cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) such as excess body weight, high blood pressure (BP), diabetes, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and active smoking are responsible for more than half of new CVD diagnoses and one fifth of 10-year mortality [3]. Assessing and managing cardiovascular risk is particularly relevant in older adults, as advancing age itself is a predisposing factor for CVD [4]. (Source: Maturitas)

The impact of short-term blood pressure variability on dementia in Parkinson ’s disease in relation to the renin-angiotensin system
Background: Cardiovascular dysautonomy and dementia are common non-motor features of Parkinson ’s disease (PD). Apart from orthostatic hypotension, supine hypertension (SH) and abnormal nocturnal blood pressure profile, also short-term blood pressure variability (BPV) may play a role in the pathogenesis of dementia. Role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in this process remains unclear. (Source: Parkinsonism and Related Disorders)
