Risk Factors and Predictive Efficacy of Visceral Pleural Invasion in Lung Adenocarcinoma Patients with mGGN type
CONCLUSION: The occurrence of visceral pleural infiltration in patients with mGGN lung adenocarcinoma is related to the relationship between pleural indentation and bronchus and nodules. Combined with the above indicators, the risk of visceral pleural infiltration in patients can be effectively predicted, and early intervention and treatment can be performed on high-risk patients accordingly to effectively prevent and treat visceral pleural infiltration.PMID:38687859 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Prediction and causal inference of hyperuricemia using gut microbiota
This study aimed to determine the relationship between HUA and GM. The microbiome of 224 men and 254 women aged 40 years was analyzed through next-generation sequencing and machine learning. We obtained GM data through 16S rRNA-based sequencing of the fecal samples, finding that alpha-diversity by Shannon index was significantly low in the HUA group. Linear discriminant effect size analysis detected a high abundance of the genera Collinsella and Faecalibacterium in the HUA and non-HUA groups. Based on light gradient boosting machine learning, we propose that HUA can be predicted with high AUC using four clinical characteri...

Experimental laboratory models as tools for understanding modifiable dementia risk
Alzheimers Dement. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1002/alz.13834. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExperimental laboratory research has an important role to play in dementia prevention. Mechanisms underlying modifiable risk factors for dementia are promising targets for dementia prevention but are difficult to investigate in human populations due to technological constraints and confounds. Therefore, controlled laboratory experiments in models such as transgenic rodents, invertebrates and in vitro cultured cells are increasingly used to investigate dementia risk factors and test strategies which target them to prevent dementia. This re...

Insomnia and risk of mortality in older adults
J Sleep Res. 2024 Apr 29:e14229. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14229. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExisting evidence linking insomnia to all-cause mortality in older individuals remains inconclusive. We conducted a retrospective study of a large cohort of veterans aged 65-80 years old identified from the Corporate Data Warehouse, a large data repository derived from the Veterans Health Administration integrated medical records. Veterans' enrollees with and without International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision, codes corresponding to insomnia diagnosis between 1 January 2010 and 30 March 2019 were assessed for elig...

Left atrium volume and function changes during stress in patients with primary mitral regurgitation and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with primary MR and preserved LV EF, LA parameters are related to SPAP and NT-pro-BNP concentration. LA volume indices, LA EF and LA filling index are predictors of EIPH.PMID:38687977 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241251441 (Source: Perfusion)

A Structure-Based Pharmacophore Modelling Approach to Identify and Design New Neprilysin (NEP) Inhibitors: An in silico-based investigation
Arch Biochem Biophys. 2024 Apr 28:110019. doi: 10.1016/j.abb.2024.110019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeutral endopeptidase or neprilysin (NEP) cleaves the natriuretic peptides, bradykinin, endothelin, angiotensin II, amyloid β protein, substance P, etc., thus modulating their effects on heart, kidney, and other organs. NEP has a proven role in hypertension, heart disease, renal disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and some cancers. NEP inhibitor development has been in focus since the US FDA approved a combination therapy of angiotensin II type 1 receptor inhibitor (valsartan) and NEP inhibitor (sacubitril) for use in heart...

Reduced Immunogenicity of COVID-19 Vaccine in Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study
Acta Med Okayama. 2024 Apr;78(2):185-191. doi: 10.18926/AMO/66927.ABSTRACTThe global pandemic of coronavirus infection 2019 (COVID-19) was an unprecedented public health emergency. Several clinical studies reported that heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity are critical risk factors for increased severity of and hospitalization for COVID-19. This is largely because patients with these underlying medical conditions can show poor immune responses to the COVID-19 vaccinations. Diabetes is one of the underlying conditions most highly associated with COVID-19 susceptibility and is consid...

In silico and in vitro assessment of drugs potentially causing adverse effects by inhibiting CYP17A1
This study combined in silico and in vitro methods to identify drugs inhibiting CYP17A1. The most potent CYP17A1 inhibitors identified are serdemetan, mocetinostat, nolatrexed, liarozole, and talarozole. While some of these drugs are currently under investigation for the treatment of various cancers, their potential for the treatment of prostate cancer is yet to be explored. The DrugBank database was screened for CYP17A1 inhibitors, to increase the awareness for the risk of drug-induced pseudohyperaldosteronism and to highlight drugs so far unknown for their potential to cause side effects resulting from CYP17A1 inhibition...

Pancreaticoduodenectomy in a patient with severe portal hypertension: the role of preoperative TIPS
We present the case of a 67 year-old patient case with a resectable ampullary cancer and portal hypertension managed with Preoperative Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) to allow a PD. We present a literature review on the use of preoperative TIPS in patients who are candidates to PD. Neoadjuvant TIPS can be safely used in selected patients with severe portal hypertension who need a PD.PMID:38685904 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2024.10431/2024 (Source: Revista Espanola de Enfermedades Digestivas)
