Smoking behaviour in post-acute myocardial infarction patients: cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Multinomial logistic regression analysis identified current smoking as a significant predictor of intention to quit in the preparation and contemplation stages. Overall, this study underscores the importance of considering smoking behaviour when evaluating the intention to quit smoking post-MI and highlights the need for tailored interventions and support strategies to address smoking cessation in this population. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of effective strategies aimed at reducing persistent smoking following MI and improving patient outcomes.PMID:38694391 | PMC:PMC11060240 | DO...

Iron deficiency and all-cause mortality after myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: Iron deficiency is common among patients with the first MI. The PragueID criteria based on iron and soluble transferrin receptor levels provide the best prediction of mortality and should be evaluated in future interventional studies for the identification of patients potentially benefiting from intravenous iron therapy.PMID:38697863 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.04.020 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

Probiotics for Inflammatory Bowel Disease; A Deep Dive into Their Impact on Disease Course and Associated Health Risks
In conclusion, we recommend probiotics as an adjuvant therapeutic option for IBD therapy for ulcerative colitis; however, their role in Crohn's disease needs further research.PMID:38693730 | DOI:10.2174/0109298673314861240429072352 (Source: Current Medicinal Chemistry)

Cardiac evaluation in amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction with suspected cardiac ischemia?: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionsWe discuss here cardiac abnormalities in patients with AIT, which may be due to relative ischemia secondary to increased metabolic demand during hyperthyroidism. Improvement of cardiac complications is expected through an optimal AIT therapy including medical therapy as the primary approach and, when necessary, thyroidectomy. Cardiac investigations in the context of AIT should be carefully considered and may not justify delaying other crucial interventions. If considered mandatory, diagnostic procedures such as coronary angiography should be preferred to functional testing. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

SGLT-2 inhibitors May Decrease Recurrent Gout Flares in Patients with Type 2 diabetes
Dr. Bernal Clinical question: Do SGLT-2 inhibitors decrease gout flares in patients with type 2 diabetes and a known history of gout? Background: Sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2 inhibitors) are known to decrease serum urate levels and the risk of incident gout. However, their role in secondary prevention of gout flares is unknown. Study design: Propensity score–matched, new-user cohort study Setting: British Columbia, Canada Synopsis: Using a group of population-based, linked, administrative databases, the population of British Columbia was studied. 15,067 patients with gout and type 2 diabetes had f...

Identifying Risk Indicators of Cardiovascular Disease in Fasa Cohort Study (FACS): An Application of Generalized Linear Mixed-Model Tree
CONCLUSION: Given the superior performance of the GLMM tree compared with the standard tree and the lack of significant difference with the GLMM, using this model is suggested due to its simpler interpretation and fewer assumptions. Using updated statistical models for more accurate CVD prediction can result in more precise frameworks to aid in proactive patient detection planning.PMID:38690790 | DOI:10.34172/aim.2024.35 (Source: Archives of Iranian Medicine)
