FEV < sub > 1 < /sub > and FVC as robust risk factors for cardiovascular disease and mortality: Insights from a large population study
DISCUSSION: Reduced FEV1 and FVC represent robust risk factors for cardiovascular disease and mortality. The fact that the increased risk was evident also at FEV1 and FVC levels exceeding 80 %pred challenges the contemporary classification of lung function categories and the notion that the entire FEV1- and FVC-range above 80 % of predicted represents a normal lung function.PMID:38670319 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107614 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Regeneration of Nonhuman Primate Hearts With Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiac Spheroids
CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that direct injection of hiPSC-CSs restores the contractile functions of injured primate hearts with an acceptable risk of posttransplant arrhythmia. Although the mechanism for the functional benefits is not fully elucidated, these findings provide a strong rationale for conducting clinical trials using the equivalent CM products.PMID:38666382 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.064876 (Source: Circulation)

Cardiovascular Risk Associated With Social Determinants of Health at Individual and Area Levels
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study, both individual- and area-level SDOH were associated with ASCVD risk; adding both individual- and area-level SDOH to the PCEs modestly improved discrimination and calibration for estimating ASCVD risk for Black individuals, and adding individual-level SDOH to PREVENT plus SDI also modestly improved calibration. These findings suggest that both individual- and area-level SDOH may be considered in future development of ASCVD risk assessment tools, particularly among Black individuals.PMID:38669015 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.8584 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Serine protease inhibitor, SerpinA3n regulates cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction
Cardiovasc Res. 2024 Apr 26:cvae075. doi: 10.1093/cvr/cvae075. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFollowing myocardial infarction, the heart repairs itself via a fibrotic repair response. The degree of fibrosis is determined by the balance between deposition of extracellular matrix by activated fibroblasts and breakdown of nascent scar tissue by proteases that are secreted predominantly by inflammatory cells. Excessive proteolytic activity and matrix turnover has been observed in human heart failure and protease inhibitors in the injured heart regulate matrix breakdown. Serine protease inhibitors (Serpins) represent the largest...

Ultrasound ‑targeted microbubble destruction technology delivering β‑klotho to the heart enhances FGF21 sensitivity and attenuates heart remodeling post‑myocardial infarction
Int J Mol Med. 2024 Jun;53(6):54. doi: 10.3892/ijmm.2024.5378. Epub 2024 Apr 26.ABSTRACTFibroblast growth factor (FGF)21 is a peptide hormone that improves mitochondrial function and energy metabolism, and the deficiency of its co‑receptor β‑klotho (KLB) causes decreased FGF21 sensitivity. The present study examined whether the cardiac delivery of plasmids containing the KLB gene via ultrasound‑targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) enhances the efficacy of FGF21 against heart failure post‑acute myocardial infarction (AMI). For this purpose, the levels of FGF21 in patients and rats with heart dysfunction post‑i...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 2005: Potential Targets of Natural Products for Improving Cardiac Ischemic Injury: The Role of Nrf2 Signaling Transduction
Zhang Myocardial ischemia is the leading cause of health loss from cardiovascular disease worldwide. Myocardial ischemia and hypoxia during exercise trigger the risk of sudden exercise death which, in severe cases, will further lead to myocardial infarction. The Nrf2 transcription factor is an important antioxidant regulator that is extensively engaged in biological processes such as oxidative stress, inflammatory response, apoptosis, and mitochondrial malfunction. It has a significant role in the prevention and treatment of several cardiovascular illnesses, since it can control not only the expression of several an...
