Blood Pressure Control and Associated Factors among Hypertension Comorbid Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Southeast Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: Uncontrolled hypertension was found to be high among hypertension comorbid type 2 diabetic patients. Patients' adherence to antihypertensive medication, physical activity, and alcohol abstinence should be maximized. Loss of weight is also crucial, as is the early detection and management of comorbidities.PMID:38655153 | PMC:PMC11039015 | DOI:10.1155/2024/6668436 (Source: International Journal of Hypertension)

Magnitude of Thrombocytopenia and Associated Factors among Pregnant Women Attending the Antenatal Care Service Unit of Wachemo University Nigist Ellen Mohammed Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Hosanna, Southern Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: The magnitude of thrombocytopenia in this study was 14.8%. Rural residence, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and anemia were significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. Therefore, the platelet count should be routinely determined during antenatal care visits for proper diagnosis and to minimize bleeding during and/or after childbirth.PMID:38655566 | PMC:PMC11039013 | DOI:10.1155/2024/8163447 (Source: Advances in Hematology)

Associated factors, incidence, and management of gestational and congenital syphilis in a Brazilian state capital: a cross-sectional study
This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of cases of gestational and congenital syphilis and the hospital care provided for newborns in Campo Grande municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, from 2013 to 2018. This is a cross-sectional study based on data from Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (SINAN) and hospital medical records. Chi-square or Fisher's exact test and logistic regression analysis were used to assess the associations and relationships between the child's clinical outcome at birth and the mother's clinical-obstetric and epidemiological characteristics. Cumul...

Survival and mortality profile among people living with HIV in a cohort in the Northeastern region of Brazil
This study aimed to estimate the survival and causes of death according to age group and sex among PLHIV monitored at two referral centers in the Northeastern Brazil. This is a prospective, retrospective cohort with death records from 2007 to 2018, based on a database that registers causes of death using the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10), which were subsequently coded following the Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe). A total of 2,359 PLHIV participated in the study, with 63.2% being men, with a follow-up period of 13.9 years. Annual mortality rate was 1.46 deaths per 100 PLHIV (95% CI: 1.33 - 1.60) wit...

Competitive adsorption of microRNA-532-3p by circular RNA SOD2 activates Thioredoxin Interacting Protein/NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 pathway and promotes pyroptosis of non-alcoholic fatty hepatocytes
CONCLUSION: circSOD2 competitively sponges miR-532-3p to activate the TXNIP/NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway, promoting pyroptosis in NAFLD.PMID:38659023 | DOI:10.1186/s40001-024-01817-4 (Source: Cell Research)

Spatial Proteomics Reveals Alcohol-Induced Damages to the Crypts and Villi of the Mouse Small Intestine
In this study, we employed laser capture microdissection and a label-free proteomics approach to investigate the consequences of alcohol exposure to the proteomes of crypts and villi in the proximal small intestine. Intestinal tissues from alcohol-fed and pair-fed mice were microdissected to selectively capture cells in the crypts and villi regions, followed by one-pot protein digestion and data-independent LC-MS/MS analysis. We successfully identified over 3000 proteins from each of the crypt or villi regions equivalent to ∼3000 cells. Analysis of alcohol-treated tissues indicated an enhanced alcohol metabolism and redu...

Examining within-person associations between alcohol and cannabis use and hooking up among adolescents and young adults in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Given the significant daily-level associations between alcohol and cannabis use and hooking up behavior, public health initiatives should focus on developing interventions to reduce alcohol and cannabis use and promote safer hooking up behavior among adolescents and young adults.PMID:38657402 | DOI:10.1016/j.addbeh.2024.108040 (Source: Addictive Behaviors)

Patients hospitalized with active tuberculosis and Covid-19 coinfection: A matched case-control from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2024 Apr 22;96(1):e20230791. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202420230791. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAlthough control of Covid-19 has improved, the virus continues to cause infections, such as tuberculosis, that is still endemic in many countries, representing a scenario of coinfection. To compare Covid-19 clinical manifestations and outcomes between patients with active tuberculosis infection and matched controls. This is a matched case-control study based on data from the Brazilian Covid-19 Registry, in hospitalized patients aged 18 or over with laboratory confirmed Covid-19 from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022...

Psychometric Analysis for a Standardized Approach When Evaluating Liver Transplant Candidates with Acute Alcohol-Related Hepatitis
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo summarize the role of psychometric instruments in the evaluation and management of patients with acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH) evaluated for liver transplantation (LT).Recent FindingsPsychometrics can inform the care of patients with AAH in the transplantation setting by enhancing diagnostic accuracy and allowing a more precise understanding of the patient ’s mental health status. The predictive value of the psychometric scale in LT candidates with AAH remains low and controversial.SummaryCombining psychometrics with clinical judgment and other diagnostic tools ensures a more comprehensive a...

SMARCA4-Deficient Undifferentiated Esophageal Carcinoma: A Clinical Case Series and Literature Review
ConclusionsResearch in SMARCA-deficient UEC is very limited. It is more common in men, age is variable, and associated with Barret ’s esophagus. Further research is necessary to better understand it and to establish treatment guidelines; however, it is clear that SMARCA4-deficient UEC carries a significantly poor prognosis. Benchmark dose profiles for bivariate exposures
AbstractWhile benchmark dose (BMD) methodology is well-established for settings with a single exposure, these methods cannot easily handle multidimensional exposures with nonlinear effects. We propose a framework for BMD analysis to characterize the joint effect of a two-dimensional exposure on a continuous outcome using a generalized additive model while adjusting for potential confounders via propensity scores. This leads to a dose –response surface which can be summarized in two dimensions by a contour plot in which combinations of exposures leading to the same expected effect are identified. In our motivating study o...
