36. Investigating the Role of Hippocampal Parvalbumin Interneurons in Schizophrenia-Like Deficits and Alcohol Intake
Schizophrenia is characterized by positive (e.g. hallucinations and delusions) and negative (e.g. anhedonia, social withdrawal) symptoms. Schizophrenia patients are at an increased risk for developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD), which results in worse health and social outcomes. The anterior hippocampus (ventral hippocampus (vHipp) in rodents) has been implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia. Specifically, both schizophrenia patients and rodent models displaying schizophrenia-like deficits show hippocampal hyperactivity, thought to be driven by deficits in parvalbumin (PV)-positive inhibitory interneurons. 37. Plasma Level of the Antimicrobial Peptide LL37 (Cathelicidin) is Negatively Associated With Alcohol Use Disorder in US Veterans
We reported lower gene expression of LL-37, an antimicrobial peptide and immunomodulator, in the brains of individuals who died by suicide versus nonpsychiatric controls who died by alternative causes. LL-37 is also reduced in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), as is the LL-37 homologue, cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (CRAMP), in animal models of AUD. We hypothesized that plasma LL-37 will be negatively associated with AUD, other suicide risk factors, and SSDV. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

135. Psychiatric Medication and Physiological Responses to Alcohol in Young Adults With Bipolar Disorder
Alcohol use problems occur at higher rates in bipolar disorder than the general population. Youth with bipolar disorder may experience alcohol intoxication differently with this relating to risk for alcohol misuse. It is unclear how psychiatric medication affects response to alcohol in bipolar disorder. This preliminary study investigates physiological responses to alcohol in young adults with bipolar disorder and effects of medication. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

158. Personal History of Alcohol Use Predicts Antidepressant Efficacy of Ketamine
Antidepressant response to ketamine is greatest in patients with a family history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), however it remains unclear if this is true for a personal history of alcohol use. The purpose of this study is to confirm if an individual history of alcohol use can predict antidepressant response to ketamine. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

Interplay between metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and renal function: An intriguing pediatric perspective
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 21;30(15):2081-2086. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i15.2081.ABSTRACTOver recent years, the nomenclature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has undergone significant changes. Indeed, in 2020, an expert consensus panel proposed the term "Metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease" (MAFLD) to underscore the close association of fatty liver with metabolic abnormalities, thereby highlighting the cardiometabolic risks (such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease) faced by these patients since childhood. More recently, this term has been further ...

Necroptosis contributes to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease pathoetiology with promising diagnostic and therapeutic functions
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 14;30(14):1968-1981. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i14.1968.ABSTRACTNonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent type of chronic liver disease. However, the disease is underappreciated as a remarkable chronic disorder as there are rare managing strategies. Several studies have focused on determining NAFLD-caused hepatocyte death to elucidate the disease pathoetiology and suggest functional therapeutic and diagnostic options. Pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and necroptosis are the main subtypes of non-apoptotic regulated cell deaths (RCDs), each of which represents particular characteristic...

Psychosocial and medication interventions to stop or reduce alcohol consumption during pregnancy
CONCLUSIONS: Brief psychosocial interventions may increase the rate of continuous abstinence among pregnant women who report alcohol use during pregnancy. Further studies should be conducted to investigate the efficacy and safety of psychosocial interventions and other treatments (e.g. medications) for women with AUD. These studies should provide detailed information on alcohol use before and during pregnancy using consistent measures such as the number of drinks per drinking day. When heterogeneous populations are recruited, more detailed information on alcohol use during pregnancy should be provided to allow future syste...

Role of the addiction clinical nurse specialist in acute hospital settings
CONCLUSION: Participants indicated several benefits to implementing an ACNS role in their hospital, such as ensuring that patients who misuse substances experienced continuity of care which began at admission, was followed-up during inpatient stays and was maintained in the community.PMID:38680049 | DOI:10.7748/ns.2024.e12305 (Source: Nursing Standard)

Mitochondrial dynamics, quality control and mtDNA in Alcohol-associated liver disease and liver cancer
Hepatology. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.1097/HEP.0000000000000910. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMitochondria are intracellular organelles responsible for energy production, glucose and lipid metabolism, cell death, cell proliferation, and innate immune response. Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that constantly undergo fission, fusion, and intracellular trafficking, as well as degradation and biogenesis. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in a variety of chronic liver diseases including alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and hepatocellular carcinom...

Mounting Stroke Crisis in India: A Systematic Review
Cureus. 2024 Mar 27;16(3):e57058. doi: 10.7759/cureus.57058. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTStroke, a neurological disorder, has emerged as a formidable health challenge in India, with its incidence on the rise. Increased risk factors, which also correlate with economic prosperity, are linked to this rise, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and alcohol intake. Particularly worrisome is the impact on young adults, a pivotal segment of India's workforce. Stroke encompasses various clinical subtypes and cerebrovascular disorders (CVDs), contributing to its multifaceted nature. Globally, stroke's esc...
