Use of carbonyldiimidazole as a derivatization agent for the detection of pinacolyl alcohol, a forensic marker for Soman, by EI-GC-MS and LC-HRMS in official OPCW proficiency test matrices
J Forensic Sci. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1111/1556-4029.15527. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPinacolyl alcohol (PA), a key forensic marker for the nerve agent Soman (GD), is a particularly difficult analyte to detect by various analytical methods. In this work, we have explored the reaction between PA and 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) to yield pinacolyl 1H-imidazole-1-carboxylate (PIC), a product that can be conveniently detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Regarding its GC-MS profile, this new carbamate derivative of PA possesses favor...

A qualitative assessment of blunt smokers' perceptions and receptivity to non-tobacco blunt wraps
CONCLUSIONS: The N-TBW is unlikely to displace the cigarillo in the near-term future. A more likely scenario is that blunt smokers will continue to use cigarillos with intermittent use of N-TBWs in situational settings. If this occurs, then blunt smokers will continue to be exposed to harmful tobacco products.PMID:38647093 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00331 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Alcohol effects on drivers' speed management: The influence of visual performance and road complexity
CONCLUSIONS: Drivers under the influence of a low-moderate dose of alcohol seem to be less aware of the risk. Contrast sensitivity is a good predictor of the speed choice when DUIA. A better understanding of drivers' behavior under the influence of substance use may be useful to adjust and improve the traffic laws and driving regulations.PMID:38647099 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.24-00020 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Synthesis of New Multifunctional Linolenic Acid Vanillyl Ester and Investigation of Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities
Appl Biochem Biotechnol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1007/s12010-024-04945-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVanillyl alcohol (VA) possesses potent antioxidant activity, yet its applicability is hindered by its limited solubility in emulsions or non-polar organic solvents. Conversely, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids exhibit antibacterial properties. The combination of these compounds offers the prospect of developing novel phenolic lipid compounds with dual antioxidant and antibacterial activities, alongside enhanced solubility capabilities. In this investigation, linolenic acid vanillyl ester (LAVE) was synthesized from VA...

Total flavonoids of Broussonetia papyrifera alleviate non-alcohol fatty liver disease via regulating Nrf2/AMPK/mTOR signaling pathways
CONCLUSION: Our experiments proved that TFBP has the therapeutic effect in NAFLD, and the activation of Nrf2 and AMPK signaling pathways should make sense.PMID:38649009 | DOI:10.1016/j.bbalip.2024.159497 (Source: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta)

Delays in blood collection and drug toxicology results among crash-involved drivers arrested for impaired driving
CONCLUSIONS: Crash severity and the time of day at which a crash occurs can result in delays in the collection of blood specimens after impaired driving arrests. Because drugs often continue to be metabolized and eliminated between arrest and biological specimen collection, measured concentrations may not represent the concentrations of drugs that were present at the time of driving. This has the potential to affect drug-impaired driving prosecution, particularly in jurisdictions whose laws specify per se impairment thresholds.PMID:38648016 | DOI:10.1080/15389588.2024.2333918 (Source: Traffic Injury Prevention)

Excessive Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Disorders: A Policy Brief of the American College of Physicians
Ann Intern Med. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.7326/M23-3434. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlcohol is used by more people in the United States than tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems, or illicit drugs. Several health conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and liver disease, are associated with excessive alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. Nearly 30 million people aged 12 years or older in the United States reported past-year alcohol use disorder in 2022, but-despite its prevalence-alcohol use disorder is undertreated. In this policy brief, the American College of Physicians outlines the health effects of...

The Relationship Between Self-Reported Childhood Maltreatment and Mental Health in Substance Use Disorders: A 6-Year Retrospective Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the association between self-reported CM and mental health and life satisfaction in patients with substance use disorder. Our results may imply an increased risk of adverse outcomes in patients with high levels of CM, while bearing in mind that both current and retrospective mental health and substance use problems can influence the accuracy of recalling CM.PMID:38648609 | DOI:10.1080/15504263.2024.2338799 (Source: Journal of Dual Diagnosis)

Modest effect of differential dietary vitamin A intake on the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease
CONCLUSIONS: Altered vitamin A intake and hepatic vitamin A storage have a minor effect on the pathogenesis of ALD. Thus, given the known link between altered retinoic acid signaling and ALD, future studies that further explore this linkage are warranted.PMID:38649284 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15329 (Source: Cell Research)
