WAMC (waitlist edition)
Hello all! I applied this previous cycle and wanted to post on here retroactively regarding my chances of getting off waitlist, or advice on if the schools I picked were good choices. I'm a white, female, VA resident. VCU was my undergraduate with a major in chemistry and a minor in Spanish (fair proficiency). cGPA: 3.79 sGPA: 3.67 MCAT (only attempt) 513 (128, 128, 128, 129) One undergraduate institutional action (non-academic, underage alcohol consumption early Freshman year)... Do I have a chance to apply this year? Or should I consider something else?
Should I even attempt to apply to medical school: 7 years as an LPN, 3.0 GPA B.S. in Biology, 1 resolved DUI on record, and an army veteran? The dui clinical founding was that I don’t have a drug/alcohol problem. Please advise , I feel hopeless and trying to figure out how and if to move forward. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Polarities of alcohol and carbonyl groups
Why would an alcohol group placed on a hydrocarbon be of greater polarity than a carbonyl group on the same position? I thought the polarity of the carbonyl was what made it so susceptible to nucleophilic attacks. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Acamprosate vs naltrexone vs both
Hey, just wanted to start a conversation about these medicines. I tend to lean on naltrexone heavily in my practice in large part because that’s just what I’ve had the most experience with. I had someone in my office today who wants to get off alcohol but is on chronic opiates for back issues. (status post fusion) which made me consider reaching for acamprosate. I’ve written it for 5 or so people and I have never had a home run, but I have also never really had tons of negative to say about... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prevention of Hand Dermatitis in Surgery/Procedural Specialties
I am not a surgeon. I am a rising interventional cardiology fellow. I have mild chronic atopic dermatitis, nowadays mostly confined to my hands. We mostly use alcohol-based solution (Sterillium) and non-latex gloves. I have noticed lately as I do more cases, I have started to develop some dermatitis on my hands. There isn't too much about this topic online, a limited thread from a while ago, and I suspect that this is a fairly common issue particularly given the harsher scrubs you guys use... Too late to get addiction pathway boarded?
So I've been out of residency for two years, mostly private practice (a little bit of psych ED moonlighting in the beginning). I'd say about 20% of my patients have some substance issues, mostly alcohol and marijuana. I did get th e x-waiver but don't really prescribe much suboxone currently. How hard would it be to get the hours to get addiction boarded? I imagine I'd need to also switch up my practice setting to get more addiction demographics too. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
