Using 2 benzos for alcohol withdrawal
Hi. I'm a pharmacist working at a psych hospital. Just wondering why some of the docs at my hospital use chlordiazepoxide and oxazepam for the first dose for some patients. One doc ordered oxazepam 60 mg and chlordiazepoxide 50 mg X 1. Recently I had orders for oxazepam 30 mg and chlordiazepoxide 25 mg X 1. When I asked, the charge nurse told me the patient scored 25 on CIWA-Ar. My question is, what's the reason behind the combo? Oxazepam has a slower onset vs chlordiazepoxide and a shorter... alcoholic ketoacidosis and lactic acidosis
Ok, this might be basic for a lot of you, so trying to ask this without sounding like a complete tool. I get alcoholics in the ED all the time, with an elevated anion gap, and elevated lactate levels. Is their alcoholic ketoacidosis causing the lactic acidosis as well? If I have read/interpreted things from tintinalli, it says that AKA shouldn't be causing a lactic acidosis and/or wide anion gap, so we should look for other causes. Many times, these guys won't have positive ketones in the... alcoholic ketoacidosis and lactic acidosis (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Finance/Oil and Gas Doctor? Red Flags?
Alright SDN I want to hear your thoughts. I am recent graduate at an above average state school. During my freshman year I kept getting in trouble with my school in the dorms. I was caught twice in the dorms with alcohol and received an MIP. I was also caught and arrested with a non-felony fake ID charge the same year. I think I was honestly one step away from getting suspended for a semester but luckily got my act together. All charges were eventually dropped and expunged but still remain... Alcoholism and the ER
Anyone think that the ER probably does more to allow people to continue drinking alcohol than to stop drinking? Took care of a guy today who has been to the ER numerous times, and admitted numerous times, for complications from EtOH. The very first thing he said was "I having pancreatitis from my drinking." He was honest, and I said I appreciated his honesty. Now, what would happen 100 years ago was these people would sit around at home in pain for several days, vomiting, and go... Alcohol and Seizures?
Hello, I'm a nursing student here. Ok so I have been doing some research on epilepsy for a presentation in class. On of the subtopics is seizures in relation to alcohol. I have been asking this question as well as trying to search this question and cannot get any solid answer. Every answer is different and everyone claims their answer is correct. The question is, is it possible for someone to have a seizure while drinking alcohol? I am NOT referring to withdrawal because everyone immediately... Alcohol and Seizures?
