Engineering of electrospun polycaprolactone/polyvinyl alcohol-collagen based 3D nano scaffolds and their drug release kinetics using cetirizine as a model drug
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 25:131847. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131847. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCombining the versatility of electrospinning with the biocompatibility of Polycaprolactone and Collagen, this study aims to create advanced 3D nano scaffolds for effective drug delivery. Ceramic materials like hydroxyapatite (nHAp) are incorporated as bioactive agents in the fibers. Electrospun PCL (Polycaprolactone)/collagen nanofibers and PVA (Poly-vinyl alcohol)/collagen are promising tissue-engineering substitutes with high biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and great tensile strength. Small pores in these nanof...

Environmental sustainability of diets among children and adolescents in the German DONALD cohort study: Age and time trends, and nutrient adequacy
CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore both the further need but also the capacity for change toward more environmentally sustainable diets. Yet, the trade-off between environmental sustainability and nutrient adequacy in diets of children and adolescents requires specific attention to dietary composition.PMID:38677519 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.04.026 (Source: Am J Clin Nutr)

Combined superficial keratectomy, alcohol delamination and amniotic membrane patch with fibrin glue in Salzmann nodular degeneration
CONCLUSIONS: Combining alcohol delamination with superficial keratectomy and amniotic membrane patch with fibrin glue is an effective procedure for the management of SND to regularize the corneal surface and avoid the recurrence of subsequent nodules. This report is the first description of the outcomes of SND cases treated with a combination of the aforementioned techniques.PMID:38676318 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241251890 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Inflammatory Protein Signatures as Predictive Disease-Specific Markers for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
AbstractNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide, consisting of a broad spectrum of diseases such as simple steatosis (NAFL), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatic inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of NAFLD. Inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and chemokines are considered as contributing factors to NAFLD development and progression. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the inflammatory protein signatures as predictive disease-specific markers for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NA...

A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial of Primary Care Treatment Integrating Motivation and Exposure Treatment (PC-TIME) in Veterans With PTSD and Harmful Alcohol Use
Behav Ther. 2024 May;55(3):570-584. doi: 10.1016/j.beth.2023.08.011. Epub 2023 Sep 10.ABSTRACTIndividuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often engage in harmful alcohol use. These co-occurring conditions are associated with negative health consequences and disability. PTSD and harmful drinking are typically experienced as closely related-thus treatments that target both simultaneously are preferred by patients. Many individuals with PTSD and harmful alcohol use receive primary care services but encounter treatment barriers in engaging in specialty mental health and substance use services. A pilot randomized cont...

Implementation costs of the appraise alcohol brief intervention (ABI) for male remand prisoners: A micro-costing protocol and preliminary findings
CONCLUSIONS: This paper provides the first estimates of the implementation costs of an ABI delivered in criminal justice setting in the UK. Although these costs are from a pilot implementation that was heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, this paper nonetheless provides useful, policy-relevant information on the potential costs of providing ABI to remand prisoners. It also serves as a methodological template, guidance, and proof of concept for future micro-costing studies of ABIs in criminal justice settings.PMID:38669136 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00341 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Nine-hundred and seventy-six college students were included in the study. They were then divided into two groups based on the Compensatory Eating and Behaviors in Response to Alcohol Consumption Scale (CEBRACS): students with a FAD positive score and student with a FAD negative score. Both groups of participants were compare...
