The association between single and dual use of cannabis and alcohol and driving under the influence and riding with an impaired driver in a large sample of Canadian adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights that all students, regardless of substance use, are at risk of IDR, but students engaged in dual use of alcohol and cannabis face an elevated risk compared to both peers who do not use substances and those who use only a single substance. These findings emphasize the importance of targeted interventions that address the risks associated with IDR.PMID:38656911 | DOI:10.1080/15389588.2024.2342571 (Source: Traffic Injury Prevention)

Association between sleep duration and a new onset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Conclusions In women, a short sleep duration was independently associated with the onset of NAFLD, thus suggesting that an adequate sleep duration can be a promising preventive factor for the onset of NAFLD in women.PMID:38658342 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.3119-23 (Source: Internal Medicine)

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy by women from southern Brazil: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol intake during pregnancy is common and affects nearly one-third of pregnant women. Knowledge of the population at risk and protective factors is essential for the development of campaigns that seek to reduce consumption and, therefore, its consequences for the mother and fetus.PMID:38655982 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2023.0186.R1.08022024 (Source: Sao Paulo Medical Journal)

Smoking cessation among tuberculosis patients during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic
In conclusion, TB smokers who tried to quit smoking during the COVID-19 pandemic faced many challenges. Despite this, we demonstrated a reasonable smoking cessation rate with a nurse-conducted motivational interview.PMID:38656469 | DOI:10.4081/monaldi.2024.2970 (Source: Monaldi Archives for Chest Disease)

Blood Pressure Control and Associated Factors among Hypertension Comorbid Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Southeast Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: Uncontrolled hypertension was found to be high among hypertension comorbid type 2 diabetic patients. Patients' adherence to antihypertensive medication, physical activity, and alcohol abstinence should be maximized. Loss of weight is also crucial, as is the early detection and management of comorbidities.PMID:38655153 | PMC:PMC11039015 | DOI:10.1155/2024/6668436 (Source: International Journal of Hypertension)

Associated factors, incidence, and management of gestational and congenital syphilis in a Brazilian state capital: a cross-sectional study
This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiological profile of cases of gestational and congenital syphilis and the hospital care provided for newborns in Campo Grande municipality, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, from 2013 to 2018. This is a cross-sectional study based on data from Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (SINAN) and hospital medical records. Chi-square or Fisher's exact test and logistic regression analysis were used to assess the associations and relationships between the child's clinical outcome at birth and the mother's clinical-obstetric and epidemiological characteristics. Survival and mortality profile among people living with HIV in a cohort in the Northeastern region of Brazil
This study aimed to estimate the survival and causes of death according to age group and sex among PLHIV monitored at two referral centers in the Northeastern Brazil. This is a prospective, retrospective cohort with death records from 2007 to 2018, based on a database that registers causes of death using the International Classification of Disease (ICD-10), which were subsequently coded following the Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe). A total of 2,359 PLHIV participated in the study, with 63.2% being men, with a follow-up period of 13.9 years. Annual mortality rate was 1.46 deaths per 100 PLHIV (95% CI: 1.33 - 1.60) wit...

Magnitude of Thrombocytopenia and Associated Factors among Pregnant Women Attending the Antenatal Care Service Unit of Wachemo University Nigist Ellen Mohammed Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Hosanna, Southern Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: The magnitude of thrombocytopenia in this study was 14.8%. Rural residence, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and anemia were significantly associated with thrombocytopenia. Therefore, the platelet count should be routinely determined during antenatal care visits for proper diagnosis and to minimize bleeding during and/or after childbirth.PMID:38655566 | PMC:PMC11039013 | DOI:10.1155/2024/8163447 (Source: Advances in Hematology)

Problematic Consumption of Alcohol, Cannabis and Cigarettes —a German Nationwide Survey on Psychopathology, Stress, Mindfulness, and Quality of Life
CONCLUSION: A comparison with the few available previous findings implies that problematic alcohol consumption has become more prevalent. There were both similarities and differences across the three substances studied with respect to patterns of problematic consumption, particularly in relation to the experience of stress.PMID:38657177 | DOI:10.3238/arztebl.m2024.0061 (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

PCSK9 inhibition attenuates alcohol-associated neuronal oxidative stress and cellular injury
This study aimed to assess the effects of alirocumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting PCSK9 to lower systemic low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), on central nervous system (CNS) pathology in a rat model of chronic alcohol exposure. Alirocumab (50 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered weekly for six weeks in 32 male rats subjected to a 35 % ethanol liquid diet or a control liquid diet (n = 8 per group). The study evaluated PCSK9 expression, LDL receptor (LDLR) expression, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammatory markers in brain tissues. Chronic ethanol exposure increased PCSK9 expression in the brain, while alirocumab...
