Video Versus Direct Laryngoscopy for Inpatient Emergency Intubation in Adults.
CONCLUSION: The routine use of VL for airway management in emergency medicine might improve patient safety, as VL is associated with a lower number of intubation attempts and with a lower frequency of esophageal intubation. Further randomized controlled trials are needed before any definitive conclusions can be drawn about the advantages of video laryngoscopy. Bowlegs and Intensive Football Training in Children and Adolescents.
CONCLUSION: Intensive soccer playing during the growing years can promote the devel- opment of bowlegs (genu varum) and, in turn, increase the risk of knee arthritis. Phy- sicians should inform young athletes and their parents of this if asked to advise about the choice of soccer as a sport for intensive training. It cannot be concluded, however, that football predisposes to bowlegs when played merely as a leisure activity. PMID: 29968558 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

Exercise Testing in Sports Medicine.
CONCLUSION: Ergometric stress tests provide important data in clinical and preventive medicine. The findings are often difficult to interpret because of the wide range of normal findings, the use of different stress-inducing protocols, and the lack of gen- erally accepted reference values. The establishment of a nationwide fitness and health registry for ergometric data would be very helpful for the individualized inter- pretation of test findings and for the monitoring of exercise training and therapy. Second Malignancies Following Childhood Cancer Treatment in Germany From 1980 to 2014.
CONCLUSION: The cumulative incidence of second malignancies is 5.4% at 25 years and 8.3% at 35 years; these figures may be slight underestimates. The DKKR is an epidemiologic registry containing no data about treatment, so the effect of treatment on the risk of second malignancies could not be studied. The acquisition and evaluation of treatment data for the overall cohort is currently one of the main tasks for research on the late sequelae of childhood cancer. This may enable conclusions to be drawn about whether treatment strategies that have been introduced to lessen the risk of a second malignancy actually have the des...

Frequent Adverse Drug Reactions, and Medication Groups under Suspicion.
CONCLUSION: The increasing number of spontaneous reports is mainly due to reports forwarded from pharmaceutical companies to the BfArM. This, in turn, is probably a result of increasingly strict legal reporting requirements in Germany. The detected differences between physicians' and patients' ADR reports can be taken to indicate that patients should be more specifically informed and questioned about potential ADRs. By reporting adverse drug reactions, physicians may improve drug safety. PMID: 29960607 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)

Strategies for Treating Scoliosis in Early Childhood.
CONCLUSION: Because of the low prevalence and heterogeneous etiology of early childhood scoliosis, the literature to date contains no randomized controlled therapeutic trials concerning this small group of high-risk patients. For the treatment to succeed, it is essential for specialists from all of the involved medical disciplines to work closely together. Conservative measures such as physiotherapy, casts, and corsets can delay the (frequent) need for surgery or even make surgery unneces - sary, particularly in the idiopathic types of early childhood scoliosis. The new non-fusion techniques enable continued growth of the ...

Treatment Options for Carbapenem- Resistant Gram-Negative Infections.
CONCLUSION: The treatment of severe infection with carbapenem-resistant pathogens should be individualized and carried out in an interdisciplinary framework, in consideration of antibiotic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in each case. The treat- ment options are based on evidence from in vitro studies, retrospective studies, and case series, which must be interpreted with caution. Randomized clinical trials are needed to test each of the various combined approaches. PMID: 29914612 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Deutsches Arzteblatt International)
