Aloe vera Gel –Reinforced Biodegradable Starch–PVA Blends for Sustainable Packaging of Green Chillies
The objective of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility ofAloe vera gel as a plasticizer and crosslinker in improving the properties of starch –polyvinyl alcohol blends that could find applications in packaging. The concentration ofAloe vera gel was varied (1%, 3%, 5% and 7% wt/wt) to produce SPA-1, SPA-3, SPA-5 and SPA-7 films, respectively. The plasticizing and crosslinking characteristics associated withAloe vera gel had a positive influence on the mechanical properties of the films. Addition ofAloe vera gel increased the tensile strength of films from 27.45  MPa (control) to 32.98, 32.53 and 32.32, for S...

A high-dose of ursodeoxycholic acid treatment alleviates liver inflammation by remodeling gut microbiota and bile acid profile in a mouse model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
In conclusion, a high dosage of UDCA can alleviate liver inflammation, probably by modifying the composition of gut microbiota and serum bile acid profiles in NASH mice.PMID:38643542 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116617 (Source: Biomedicine and pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine and pharmacotherapie)

Poly (vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan multifunctional hydrogel loading HKUST-1 nanoenzymes for diabetic wound healing
In this study, a copper-based MOF (TAX@HKUST-1) highly loaded with taxifolin (TAX) with a drug loading of 41.94 ± 2.60 % was prepared. In addition, it has excellent catalase activity, and by constructing an oxygen-releasing hydrogel (PTH) system with calcium peroxide (CaO2), it can be used as a nano-enzyme to promote the generation of oxygen from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to provide sufficient oxygen to the wound, and at the same time, solve the problem of the oxidative stress damage caused by excess H2O2 to the cells during the oxygen-releasing process. On the other hand, TAX and HKUST-1 in PTH synergistically promoted an...

Biodegradation of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) microplastics by floc-forming bacteria, Bacillus cereus strain SHBF2, isolated from a commercial aquafarm
This study aimed to utilize beneficial floc-forming bacteria Bacillus cereus SHBF2 isolated from an aquaculture farm in reducing the MP particles (PE, PP, and PS) from their environment. The bacteria were inoculated for 60 days in a medium containing MP particle as a sole carbon source. On different days of incubation (DOI), the bacterial growth analysis was monitored and the MP particles were harvested to examine their weight loss, surface changes, and alterations in chemical properties. After 60 DOI, the highest weight loss was recorded for PE, 6.87 ± 0.92%, which was further evaluated to daily reduction rate (k), 0.001...

A Single Terminal [NiII-OH] Catalyst for Direct Julia-Type Olefination and α-Alkylation Involving Sulfones and Alcohols
Chemistry. 2024 Apr 21:e202400337. doi: 10.1002/chem.202400337. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA terminal [NiII-OH] complex 1, supported by triflamide-functionalized NHC ligands, showed divergent reactivity for the reaction of sulfone with alcohol, contingent on base concentration, temperature, and time. Julia-type olefination of alcohols with sulfones was achieved using one equiv. of base, whereas lowering base loading to 0.5 equiv. afforded α-alkylated sulfones. Besides excellent substrate scope and selectivity, biologically active stilbene derivatives DMU-212, pinosylvin, resveratrol, and piceatannol were synthesized in...

Association of Herpes simplex infection with significantly increased risk of head and neck cancer: real-world evidence of about 500,000 patients
CONCLUSION: The surprisingly strong correlation with lip, oral cavity, and pharynx neoplasms sheds new light on supposedly harmless herpes simplex infections, suggesting them as a possible new factor for risk stratification.PMID:38643367 | DOI:10.1111/ijd.17196 (Source: Herpes)

Bariatric surgeons' views on pre ‐operative factors associated with improved health‐related quality of life following surgery
This study offers an initial in sight into bariatric surgeons' views on the influence of different pre-operative factors on post-operative health-related quality of life. The array of views identified suggests that there may be an opportunity for medical education, but the findings warrant caution due to the sample size. Replicati on with a larger survey may be useful, especially as predicted health-related quality of life outcomes could guide decisions regarding surgical (non)progression. (Source: Clinical Obesity)

Alcohol-Induced Denaturation of Hen Egg White Lysozyme Studied by Infrared, Circular Dichroism, and Small-Angle Neutron Scattering
J Phys Chem B. 2024 Apr 20. doi: 10.1021/acs.jpcb.4c00209. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn aqueous binary solvents with fluorinated alcohols, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), and aliphatic alcohols, ethanol (EtOH) and 2-propanol (2-PrOH), the denaturation of hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) with increasing alcohol mole fraction xA has been investigated in a wide view from the molecular vibration to the secondary and ternary structures. Circular dichroism (CD) measurement showed that the secondary structure of α-helix content of HEWL increases on adding a small amount of the fluorina...
