Strategies to enhance the response of liver cancer to pharmacological treatments
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00176.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn contrast to other types of cancers, there is no available efficient pharmacological treatment to improve the outcomes of patients suffering from major primary liver cancers, i.e., hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. This dismal situation is partly due to the existence in these tumors of many different and synergistic mechanisms of resistance, accounting for the lack of response of these patients, not only to classical chemotherapy but also to more modern pharmacological agents based on the inhibition of tyr...

Trailblazing in Adjuvant Research: Succinate's Uncharted Territory with Neutrophils
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2024 May 6. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00129.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to investigate the previously unknown connection that succinate has with neutrophils in the setting of adjuvant-mediated immunological enhancement. It has been discovered that succinates stimulate the recruitment of neutrophils in immunization sites, which in turn induces the expression of what is known as neutrophil-derived B cell-activating factor (BAFF). Further amplification of vaccine-induced antibody responses is provided via the SUCNR1-IRF5-BAFF signaling pathway, which provides insights...

Capsaicin reverses cisplatin resistance in tongue squamous cell carcinoma by inhibiting the Warburg effect and facilitating mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis via the AMPK/AKT/mTOR axis
Cell Biol Int. 2024 May 5. doi: 10.1002/cbin.12169. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCisplatin is commonly used for the chemotherapy of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC); however, adverse side effects and drug resistance impact its therapeutic efficacy. Capsaicin is an active ingredient in chili peppers that exerts antitumor effects, whether it exerts antitumor effects on cisplatin-resistant cells remains unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of capsaicin on cisplatin resistance in TSCC cells and explored the underlying mechanisms. A cisplatin-resistant TSCC cell line was established by treated wit...

Rural Households' Demand Status for Mitigation of < em > Prosopis juliflora < /em > ( < em > Sw. < /em > ) DC Invasion and Its Determinant Factors in Ethiopia: Empirical Evidence from Afar National Regional State
This study is therefore initiated with the objective of assessing rural households' demands for mitigating Prosopis juliflora invasion in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. A multistage sampling technique was employed to obtain the 313 sample rural households that were used in the analysis, and those sample households were selected randomly and independently from the Amibara and Awash Fentale districts of Afar National Regional State, Ethiopia. In doing this, a seemingly unrelated bivariate probit model was used to determine factors affecting rural households' demands for mitigating Prosopis juliflora invasion. Consequently, as ...

The importance of basic and translational research in caring for children with malignant solid tumors in Latin America
CONCLUSIONS: In Latin America, research in pediatric oncology is on the agenda, despite a notable disparity in publication rates and frequency of collaboration between countries. There is a need to strengthen scientific collaboration within Latin America and with countries from other continents to promote research and to develop novel treatment strategies that reflect the local needs of children in Latin America who have solid tumors and brain cancer.PMID:38707777 | PMC:PMC11069327 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2024.48 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)

Characterizing the Behavior of Water Interacting With a Nano-Pore Material: A Structural Investigation in Native Environment Using Magnetic Resonance Approaches
In this study, a combined MRI and MAS NMR method was used to study a nanoporous silica glass to acquire information about its structural framework and interactions with confined water. Specifically, MRI was used for a quantitative analysis of water extent. While MAS NMR techniques provided structural information of silicate materials, including interactive surface area and framework packing. Analysis of water spin-spin relaxation times (T2) suggested differences in water confinement within the characterized framework. Subsequent unsuccessful delivery of paramagnetic molecule into the pores enabled a quantitative assessment...

The chemical bond at the bottom of the Periodic Table: the case of the heavy astatine and the super-heavy tennessine
Chemphyschem. 2024 May 6:e202400310. doi: 10.1002/cphc.202400310. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, we study the chemical bond in molecules containing heavy and super-heavy elements according to the current state-of-the-art bonding models. An Energy Decomposition Analysis in combination with Natural Orbital for Chemical Valence (EDA-NOCV) within the relativistic four-component Dirac-Kohn-Sham (DKS) framework is employed, which allows to successfully include the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects on the chemical bond description.Simple halogen-bonded adducts ClXL (X=At, Ts; L= NH3, Br-, H2O, CO) of astatine and ten...

Comparative Analysis of Biomarkers in Type 2 Diabetes Patients With and Without Comorbidities: Insights Into the Role of Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease
CONCLUSIONS: Comorbidities affect the hypothesized biomarkers as diabetes progresses. Mitochondrial oxidative stress indicators, coagulation, and inflammatory markers help assess diabetes disease development and provide appropriate medications. Future studies will examine longitudinal biomarker evolution.PMID:38707193 | PMC:PMC11069335 | DOI:10.1177/11772719231222111 (Source: Biomarker Insights)

Associations between in ‐hospital daily protein intake and adverse clinical outcomes in older patients with heart failure
ConclusionsLower DPI during hospitalization is associated with an increased risk of mortality and HF readmission independent of non-proteogenic energy intake, and the possible optimal DPI for predicting adverse clinical outcomes is>1.12  g/kg IBW/day in older patients with HF. Caution is warranted when protein restriction therapy is administered to older patients with HF and renal dysfunction. (Source: ESC Heart Failure)

Turbidimetric bioassays: A solution to antimicrobial activity detection in asymptomatic bacteriuria isolates against uropathogenic Escherichia coli
This study uses turbidimetric bioassays to detect antimicrobial activity in asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) isolates against uropathogenicE. coli (UPEC). The cell-free supernatant (CFS) from eight ABU isolates showed promising results. Notably,E. coli PUTS 58 and SK-106-1 demonstrated enhanced activity in artificial urine medium. The findings suggest a potential use of ABU bacteriocin-producers as prophylactics and therapeutics amidst rising antibiotic resistance. AbstractTraditional bacteriocin screening methods often face limitations due to diffusion-related challenges in agar matrices, which can prevent the peptides from...

Exploring the dynamics of physician ‐patient relationships: Factors affecting patient satisfaction and complaints
AbstractThis review identifes the factors influencing the relationship between physicians and patients that can lead to patients' dissatisfaction and medical complaints. Utilizing a systemic approach 92 studies were retrieved which included quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method studies. Through a thematic analysis of the literature, we identified three interrelated main themes that can influence the relationship between physicians and patients, patients' satisfaction, and the decision to file a medico-legal complaint. The main themes include patient and physician characteristics; the interpersonal relationship betwee...
