Hastings, Nick Gore, Peter Baker, Claire McDowell Tizard Learning Disability Review, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- With a historic lack of attention to synthesis methods such as systematic review and meta-analysis and a lack of randomised controlled trials, the evidence base for behavioural interventions for children and adults who are autistic or are diagnosed with developmental disabilities is patchy. The Sharland Foundation Developmental Disabilities Applied Behavioural Research...

Overcoming implementation challenges through using a train-the-trainer approach to teach numeracy in a special school setting
This study recruited 13 students aged between 12 and 16 years of age with developmental disabilities to receive TEN-DD. Pre- and post-intervention tests on a standardised numeracy measure were conducted.A train-the-trainer model was developed and successfully delivered to train teaching staff in TEN-DD. A standardised outcome measure indicated that ten students made improvements to their numeracy skills after teachers trained using this approach delivered TEN-DD for between 3 and 10 months.Very little research has been carried out to better understand methods for overcoming implementation challenges for delivering evid...

Where are services regarding sexual minorities and psychological therapies post-COVID in 2024? A mixed-method systematised review
Matt Broadway-Horner Mental Health and Social Inclusion, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- Since COVID-19, many services have burgeoned within the UK, but what about sexual minorities? Since the last review, there are appropriate therapies, but there is often inadequate research. The purpose of this mixed-method review synthesis looking into the efficacy of psychological therapies for sexual minorities. Seven studies were found in total.A mixed-method review synthesis, three studies looking into the efficacy of psychological therapies for sexual minorities and four studies addressing the experiences of sexual ...

Surgical rescue mitral valve procedure post percutaneous transluminal mitral commissurotomy —a single-center observational study
This study evaluates the outcomes of surgical rescue performed within 24  h of undergoing PTMC from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2019. Out of 2259 PTMC patients, 22 patients (<  1%) required rescue mitral valve surgery. Out of 22 patients, 17 patients (77.27%) developed mitral regurgitation; five patients (22.7%) had cardiac tamponade. Mitral valve replacement was performed in 20 patients (90.9%), while two patients (9.1%) underwent mitral valve repair. Cardiac tamponade was secondary to injury of the left atrium (9.1%), left ventricle (4.5%), and right ventricle (9.1%). Concomitant tricuspid valve repair was done i...

Transaortic septal myectomy at the time of aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis: a case series of 55 cases
ConclusionAVR with CSM is a simple technique that can be utilised in severe AS with ABSH. There does not appear to be an increase in mortality or incidence of iatrogenic VSDs. Importantly, CSM allows for the implantation of a larger aortic valve compared to measurements made before CSM. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Evaluation of the internet-based intervention “Selfapy” in participants with unipolar depression and the impact on quality of life: a randomized, parallel group study
ConclusionSelfapy proved to positively affect psychological and physical QOL in a sample of participants suffering from depressive disorders and can therefore be considered an effective and highly scalable therapeutic tool. The pattern of results might partly be attributable to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and public health measures that coincided with the trial.Trial registration: German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS): DRKS00017191. Cross-cultural validity and reliability of the comprehensive assessment of acceptance and commitment therapy processes (CompACT) in people with multiple sclerosis
ConclusionResults support using the refined CompACT-18 as a three-factor measure of psychological flexibility in PwMS. Paper and eCompACT-18 versions are equivalent. CompACT-18 can be used cross-culturally, but sub-optimal scalar invariance suggests that direct comparison between the three language versions should be interpreted with caution. News at a glance: Plants ’ tree of life, conserving U.S. federal lands, and entertaining invertebrate sentience
CONSERVATION Interior Department boosts restoration The largest manager of public lands in the United States last week announced it will manage them to promote ecological stewardship, while continuing to allow extractive commercial uses such as mining, oil drilling, and cattle grazing. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees nearly 1 million square kilometers of federal land, about 10% of the country’s landmass, mostly in Western states. Under a rule issued on 18 April, BLM will now assess the ecological condition of all hectares it manages , not just grazing land. The agency will a...

A gene mutation turned these fish into intrepid explorers
The 240 species of cichlid fish in Africa’s Lake Tanganyika come in an astonishing variety of shapes and sizes, from the paper clip–size “sheller” that lives in abandoned snail shells to the nearly meter-long emperor cichlid. Biologists have long wondered what drove this burst of evolutionary creativity. Now, researchers have demonstrated what many suspected but had not been able to prove: that the behavior of an ancestral species—in this case, an appetite for exploration—set the stage for the rapid evolution. The work, which appears today in Science ,  also ties this behavioral trait to a...

CBT More Effective Than Mindfulness for Prolonged Grief Symptoms Over Time, Study Finds
Both grief-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy improved patients ’ symptoms of prolonged grief disorder immediately after 11 weeks of treatment, according to astudy published yesterday inJAMA Psychiatry. Grief-focused CBT, however, was more effective in reducing patients ’ symptom severity six months after treatment ended.“[B]etween 15% and 25% of patients with prolonged grief disorder offered grief-focused cognitive behavior therapy decline to participate in treatment, and between 17% and 50% may not respond to treatment,” wrote Richard A. Bryant, Ph.D., of the Univer...
