Unplanned Return to Hospital After Same Day Oral Cavity Resection: A Dual Institution Study
CONCLUSION: Unplanned return to the hospital following outpatient oral cavity resection is prevalent and primarily driven by postoperative primary resection site concerns. Among patients selected for same day discharge, no definite population at highest risk of unplanned return was identified.PMID:38321926 | DOI:10.1177/00034894241230355 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Oral_voting_transfer: classification of oral microorganisms ’ function proteins with voting transfer model
IntroductionThe oral microbial group typically represents the human body’s highly complex microbial group ecosystem. Oral microorganisms take part in human diseases, including Oral cavity inflammation, mucosal disease, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer. On the other hand, oral microbes can also cause endocrine disorders, digestive function, and nerve function disorders, such as diabetes, digestive system diseases, and Alzheimer’s disease. It was noted that the proteins of oral microbes play significant roles in these serious diseases. Having a good knowledge of oral microbes can be helpful in analyzing ...

Prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea after treatment for advanced T-stage head and neck cancer
ConclusionIn this population of advanced T-stage HNC patients, the prevalence of OSA was 72%, which is considerably higher than in the general population (2 –50%). Given the high prevalence, screening of this entire subgroup for OSA may be indicated. Future studies to identify high risk factors and develop an OSA screening protocol are needed. Legume intake and cancer risk in a network of case-control studies
Eur J Clin Nutr. 2024 Feb 6. doi: 10.1038/s41430-024-01408-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEvidence on the relationship between legume consumption and risk of specific cancer sites is inconclusive. We used data from a series of case-controls studies, conducted in Italy and in the Swiss Canton of Vaud between 1991 and 2009 to quantify the association between legume consumption and several cancer sites including oral cavity, esophagus, larynx, stomach, colorectum, breast, endometrium, ovary, prostate and kidney. Multiple logistic regression models controlled for sex, age, education, smoking, alcohol, body mass index, physic...

Early Detection of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders: A Review on Prospective Screening Methods with Regard to Global Challenges
J Maxillofac Oral Surg. 2024 Feb;23(1):23-32. doi: 10.1007/s12663-022-01710-9. Epub 2022 Apr 15.ABSTRACTOral cancer is a cancer type that is widely prevalent in low-and middle-income countries with a high mortality rate, and poor quality of life for patients after treatment. Early treatment of cancer increases patient survival, improves quality of life and results in less morbidity and a better prognosis. To reach this goal, early detection of malignancies using technologies that can be used in remote and low resource areas is desirable. Such technologies should be affordable, accurate, and easy to use and interpret. This ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 645: Photodynamic Therapy for Eye, Ear, Laryngeal Area, and Nasal and Oral Cavity Diseases: A Review
avid Aebisher Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising modality for the treatment of various diseases. This non-invasive approach utilizes photosensitizing agents and light to selectively target and destroy abnormal cells, providing a valuable alternative to traditional treatments. Research studies have explored the application of PDT in different areas of the head. Research is focusing on a growing number of new developments and treatments for cancer. One of these methods is PDT. Photodynamic therapy is now a revolutionary, progressive method of cancer therapy. A very important feature of PDT is that cell...

Actinomyces-induced Osteomyelitis of the Mandible - A Rare Disease
CONCLUSION: In summary, jaw osteomyelitis caused by Actinomyces should always be part of the differential diagnosis; as these organisms are commensal flora, the symptoms manifested are nonspecific, and such a diagnosis could be easily missed, resulting in delay of care and disease progression.PMID:38299277 | DOI:10.2174/0118715265275102231217155015 (Source: Infectious Disorders Drug Targets)

Evaluation of DNA methylation levels of < em > SEPT9 < /em > and < em > SHOX2 < /em > in plasma of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using droplet digital PCR
Oncol Rep. 2024 Mar;51(3):52. doi: 10.3892/or.2024.8711. Epub 2024 Feb 1.ABSTRACTHead and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most commonly diagnosed cancer globally. HNSCC develops from the mucosa of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. Methylation levels of septin 9 (SEPT9) and short stature homeobox 2 (SHOX2) genes in circulating cell‑free DNA (ccfDNA) are considered epigenetic biomarkers and have shown predictive value in preliminary reports in HNSCC. Liquid biopsy is a non‑invasive procedure that collects tumor‑derived molecules, including ccfDNA. In the present study, a droplet digital PCR (ddPC...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 637: Intraoral Ultrasound versus MRI for Depth of Invasion Measurement in Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Prospective Diagnostic Accuracy Study
In this study, we investigated the accuracy of intraoral ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing DOI in patients with OSCC. Histopathological measurement of DOI was used as a reference standard. We conducted a prospective study including patients planned for surgical treatment of OSCC in the tongue. The DOI was measured in an outpatient setting by intraoral ultrasound and MRI, and was compared to the histopathological DOI measurements. Bland–Altman analysis compared the mean difference and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) for ultrasound and MRI, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 617: Risk Prediction Models for Oral Cancer: A Systematic Review
Conclusions: Several risk prediction models have been identified that could be used to identify individuals at the highest risk of oral cancer within the context of screening programmes. However, external validation of these models in the target population is required, and, subsequently, an assessment of the feasibility of implementation with a risk-stratified screening programme for oral cancer.
