The association between neighborhood-level income and cancer stage at diagnosis and survival in Alberta
CONCLUSIONS: Disparities were observed in cancer outcomes across neighborhood-level income groups in Alberta, which demonstrates that health inequities by SES exist in countries with single-payer health care systems. Further research is needed to better understand the underlying causes and to develop strategies to mitigate these disparities.PMID:37994148 | DOI:10.1002/cncr.35098 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 5540: Oral Bacteria, Virus and Fungi in Saliva and Tissue Samples from Adult Subjects with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An Umbrella Review
assimo Amato Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common oral cavity malignancy associated with multiple risk factors. In the last 14 years, oral dysbiosis has attracted the scientific community’s attention as a potential oncogenic factor, in parallel with the development of omics technologies that have revolutionized microbiological research. The present umbrella review aimed to investigate the oral microbiological content (bacilli, viruses, and fungi) of tissue and saliva samples from adult (>18 years) patients with OSCC. The secondary objective was to compare the oral microbiome o...

Anesthetic management of airway stent placement by rigid bronchoscopy with superior laryngeal nerve block while preserving spontaneous breathing: A case report
Key Clinical MessageThe combination of superior laryngeal nerve block can reduce the respiratory depression that occurs during management under total intravenous anesthesia.AbstractAnesthetic management of endobronchial stent placement by rigid bronchoscopy requires the maintenance of spontaneous breathing while suppressing upper airway reflexes. The combination of superior laryngeal nerve block (SLNB) can reduce the respiratory depression that occurs during management under total intravenous anesthesia. The patient was diagnosed as having lung cancer with invasion into the right middle bronchus and stenosis of the right m...

Impact of Adjuvant Radiotherapy in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity with Perineural Invasion
CONCLUSION: The real benefit of PORT in OSCC patients with PNI is still unclear, although it may have a positive impact on DFS. Clinicians should consider individual patient's characteristics, tumor factors, and treatment goals when deciding whether to recommend PORT. Further studies are needed to clarify which entity of PNI really benefits from PORT.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: N/A Laryngoscope, 2023.PMID:37975480 | DOI:10.1002/lary.31148 (Source: Cancer Control)

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 5425: A Radiomics-Based Machine Learning Perspective on the Parotid Gland as a Potential Surrogate Marker for HPV in Oropharyngeal Cancer
Conclusions: The results suggest involvement of the parotid gland in HPV infections of the oropharyngeal region. While the role of HPV in parotid lesions is under active discussion, the migration of the virus from the oral cavity to the parotid gland seems plausible. The imaging of the parotid gland offers the benefit of fewer streak artifacts due to teeth and dental implants and the potential to screen for HPV in cases of an absent or unlocatable tumor. Future investigation can be directed to validation of the results in independent datasets and to the potential of improvement of current classification models by addition ...

B cell immune profiles in dysbiotic vermiform appendixes of pancreatic cancer patients
In this study, we analyzed healthy vermiform appendix (VA) from 20 patients with PDAC and 32 patients with colon diseases by gene expression immune profiling, flow cytometry analysis, and microbiome sequencing. We show that the VA GALT of PDAC patients exhibits markers of increased inflammation and cytotoxic cell activity. In contrast, B cell function is decreased in PDAC VA GALT based on gene expression profiling; B cells express significantly fewer MHC class II surface receptors, whereas plasma cells express the immune checkpoint molecule HLA-G. Additionally, the vermiform appendix microbiome of PDAC patients is enriched...

Season of radiotherapy and outcomes of head & neck cancer patients in the MACH-NC & MARCH meta-analyses
Head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) accounts for approximately 800,000 cases and 400,000 deaths annually worldwide [1]. The standard of care for locally-advanced disease for oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx subsites is a multimodality treatment with permutations of radiation therapy (RT), chemotherapy (CT), and surgery, in function of tumor localization. Treatment sequelae in these highly functional zones may significantly affect quality of life; and despite optimal treatment, mortality remains high. (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology)

The oral-gut-circulatory axis: from homeostasis to colon cancer
The human microbiota is widely recognized as providing crucial health benefits to its host, specifically by modulating immune homeostasis. Microbial imbalance, known as dysbiosis, is linked to several conditions in the body. The oral cavity and gut host the two largest microbial communities playing a major role in microbial-associated diseases. While the oral-gut axis has been previously explored, our review uniquely highlights the significance of incorporating the circulatory system into this axis. The interaction between immune cells, inflammatory factors, circulating bacteria, and microbial metabolites influences the ho...

A polyhexamethylene biguanide-assembly assisted strategy of dentin bonding greatly promotes bonding effects and caries treatment
J Mater Chem B. 2023 Nov 7. doi: 10.1039/d3tb02083e. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStructural degeneration of a hybrid layer composed of a demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) and adhesive causes unsatisfactory functional outcomes in terms of bonding repair and caries treatment and is accompanied by high prevalence of secondary caries. Clinically, defects in the hybrid layer from insufficient adhesive infiltration, bacterial load from retained infected-dentin, and bacterial attack from the oral cavity are the main threats to degeneration. Currently, there is no strategy to simultaneously address adhesive penetration and bacte...

Role of Lymphovascular Invasion in Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma Regional Metastasis and Prognosis
CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that LVI is a significant predictor of the presence of cervical lymph node metastasis at presentation independent of other known prognostic factors. LVI, however, was not found to be a significant independent predictor of locoregional or distant recurrence.Level of Evidence: Level III.PMID:37927046 | DOI:10.1177/00034894231211116 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)
