Host Transcriptional Regulatory Genes and Microbiome Networks Crosstalk through Immune Receptors Establishing Normal and Tumor Multiomics Metafirm of the Oral-Gut-Lung Axis
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Nov 23;24(23):16638. doi: 10.3390/ijms242316638.ABSTRACTThe microbiome has shown a correlation with the diet and lifestyle of each population in health and disease, the ability to communicate at the cellular level with the host through innate and adaptative immune receptors, and therefore an important role in modulating inflammatory process related to the establishment and progression of cancer. The oral cavity is one of the most important interaction windows between the human body and the environment, allowing the entry of an important number of microorganisms and their passage across the gastrointesti...

Causal association of serum biomarkers with oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer: a mendelian randomization study
Observational epidemiological studies revealed that multiple serum biomarkers can be associated with the risk of oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OC/OPC). However, the causal relationship between them remains la... (Source: BMC Oral Health)

A novel APC mutation associated with Gardner syndrome in a Chinese family
Gene. 2023 Dec 1:148051. doi: 10.1016/j.gene.2023.148051. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGardner syndrome (GS) is a specific form of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), which manifests as colorectal polyps, multiple osteomas and soft tissue tumors, and in the oral cavity as osteomas of the jaws, odontomas, and abnormal tooth counts. The underlying cause of GS is attributed to mutations in the APC gene. Mutations in this gene disrupt the normal functioning of the protein and lead to the development of GS. To further investigate GS, a family affected by the syndrome was selected from Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The family...

Oral micro-electronic platform for temperature and humidity monitoring
Sci Rep. 2023 Dec 2;13(1):21277. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-48379-9.ABSTRACTIntraoral theranostics, the integration of diagnostics and therapeutics within the oral cavity, is gaining significant traction. This pioneering approach primarily addresses issues like xerostomia (dry mouth), commonly resulting from cancer treatment, with a specific focus on monitoring temperature and humidity. This paper introduces the innovative Intra-Oral Portable Micro-Electronic (IOPM) fluidic theranostic device platform. It leverages conventional dental spoons by incorporating advanced sensors for precise measurements of oral temperature and hu...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 5680: Shifting Epidemiology Trends in Tongue Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study
In this study, we aimed to determine current trends in tongue cancer regarding age and gender. Data from 197 tongue cancer patients were extracted from The Oncology Center, Mansoura University (OCMU) database from 2006 to 2021. The patients were divided into two time periods: (2006–2013) and (2014–2021). We computed counts and proportions of tongue cancer for demographic and tumor characteristics. The data were analyzed using SPSS. Gender showed no statistically significant difference in both groups, while the percentages of diagnosed females were 52.7% and 52%, respectively. The percentages of ...

40. Multiple synchronous and metachronous oral carcinomas in an immune- compromised patient; the detrimental role of candidiasis in carcinogenesis
Candida is a prevalent commensal pathogen in the oral cavity. However, an interesting pathological association exists between these fungi, oral precancerous, and cancerous lesions. Candida has been shown to increase the degree of dysplasia, and progression to neoplasia in leukoplakia. Chronic candidiasis in immunocompromised results in colonization of the epithelium by the organism, which can invade the keratinocytes, damage the DNA, and break the tissue matrix, through several proposed mechanisms, resulting in cancer initiation and spread. 33. How fast is too fast? Post-operative & physical function milestones for patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery with free flap reconstruction
Around 75% of patients with oral cavity cancers undergo OMFS with tracheostomy and free flap reconstruction. H&N ERAS is complex and challenging, hence modest uptake. Our tertiary HNC service introduced ERAS in 2010. Aim: Describe postoperative milestones and assess iatrogenic influences by measuring physical function perioperatively (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

58. Contralateral drainage in oral cavity cancer in a sentinel lymph node biopsy referral centre
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB) determines lymph node status on a patient specific basis. This approach identifies first echelon nodes outside the typically dissected neck levels, such as well-lateralised tumors which drain to the contralateral neck. We aim to report the incidence of contralateral/bilateral drainage in well-lateralised oral cavity cancers and identify predictive factors. P031 The relationship between social disadvantage and staging of oral squamous cell carcinomas presenting to an oral and maxillofacial unit in the west of Ireland
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social disadvantage and the stage of OSCC upon presentation in the West and North West of Ireland, a region which experiences an inequality of investment when compared to other regions of Ireland in terms of healthcare, education, infrastructure and transport.
