Matrix ‐based molecular mechanisms, targeting and diagnostics in oral squamous cell carcinoma
AbstractOral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a head and neck cancer (HNC) with a high mortality rate. OSCC is developed in the oral cavity and it is triggered by many etiologic factors and can metastasize both regionally and distantly. Recent research advances in OSCC improved our understanding on the molecular mechanisms involved in and the initiation of OSCC metastasis. The key roles of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in OSCC are an emerging area of intensive research as the ECM macromolecular network is actively involved in events that regulate cellular morphological and functional properties, transcription and cell si...

Global prevalence of human papillomavirus-related oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThe evidence points to an apparent burden in HPV-related OPSCC, mostly in North America, Northern Europe, and Oceania, especially due to the HPV16 infection suggesting different trends across continents.Clinical relevanceThis updated systematic review and meta-analysis provide sufficient evidence about the global HPV prevalence in OSCC and OPSCC and the most frequent HPV subtype worldwide. Public Awareness on Oral Cancer: A Population- Based Study in Asturias
CONCLUSION: This survey showed a worrying lack of awareness and knowledge about oral cancer among the population of Asturias, especially among those under 50 years old. The interest shown in increasing their knowledge, give us hope in the success of future awareness campaigns.PMID:38156847 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2023.24.12.4127 (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention)

CT predictors of sub-centimeter occult lymph node metastases in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma: A case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: In cN0 OCSCC patients undergoing END, round/oval shape, asymmetric number, and disrupted fatty hilum of lymph nodes on pre-operative CT imaging are novel and highly predictive of occult nodal disease.PMID:38148295 | DOI:10.1177/19714009231224447 (Source: Cancer Control)

Risk of Parkinson's disease-related death in cancer survivors: A population-based study in Japan
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with cancer are at a high risk of PD-related death; particularly, mouth-to-stomach cancers and potentially obstructing medication for PD are attributable to a high mortality risk. Careful management, including adequate PD treatment, would benefit cancer survivors with PD and reduce the risk of PD-related death.PMID:38147694 | DOI:10.1016/j.parkreldis.2023.105966 (Source: Cancer Control)

Association Between Pre-operative 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D Deficiency and Surgical Site Infection After Oral Cavity Oncology Surgery: a Cross-Sectional Study in a Tertiary Cancer Center in Northwestern India
This study highlights the significant association between pre-operative 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of surgical site infections in patients. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in modulating the immune response, promoting antimicrobial peptides, and enhancing wound he aling. These findings support the importance of assessing and addressing vitamin D deficiency in patients scheduled for oral cavity oncology surgery to potentially reduce the incidence of SSIs. Contribution of public oral pathology services to the diagnosis of oral and oropharyngeal cancer in Brazil
This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients' histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biops...

Evaluating the Hounsfield unit assignment and dose differences between CT-based standard and deep learning-based synthetic CT images for MRI-only radiation therapy of the head and neck
CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, HU differences of CT and sCT were observed but did not translate into a reduction in gamma pass rates or differences in average PTV/OAR dose metrics greater than 3%. For sites such as the H&N where there are many tissue interfaces we did not observe large scale dose deviations but further studies using larger retrospective cohorts are merited to establish the variation in sCT dosimetric accuracy which could help to inform QA limits on clinical sCT usage.PMID:38128040 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14239 (Source: Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics)

Alveolar bone loss and tooth loss contribute to increase in cancer mortality among older patients
CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that older patients suffering from tooth loss or alveolar bone loss are at increased risks of cancer mortality, especially for total cancer and LOP cancer.PMID:38114973 | DOI:10.1186/s12903-023-03543-5 (Source: Cancer Control)
