The indirect costs of human papillomavirus-related cancer in Central and Eastern Europe: years of life lost and productivity costs
CONCLUSIONS: There is a high disease burden of HPV-related cancer-related deaths in the CEE region, with a large economic impact to society due to substantial productivity losses. It is critical to implement and reinforce public health measures with the aim to reduce the incidence of HPV-related diseases, and the subsequent premature cancer deaths. Improving HPV screening and increasing vaccination programs, in both male and female populations, could help reduce this burden.PMID:38638098 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2024.2341572 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1575: The Role of Estrogen and Estrogen Receptors in Head and Neck Tumors
etić Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the most common histological form of head and neck tumors (HNTs), which originate from the epithelium of the lips and oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, nasal cavity, and sinuses. The main risk factors include consumption of tobacco in all forms and alcohol, as well as infections with high-risk human papillomaviruses or the Epstein–Barr virus. Regardless of the etiological agent, the risk of developing different types of HNTs is from two to more than six times higher in males than in females. The reason for such disparities probably lies i...

Re-irradiation versus systemic therapy for the management of local-regionally recurrent head and neck cancer
CONCLUSION: Although re-irradiation improved overall survival compared to systemic therapy for appropriately selected patients with local-regionally recurrent head and neck cancer, the relatively high risk of toxicity must be considered.PMID:38636710 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2024.110278 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1550: Precursor Lesions, Overdiagnosis, and Oral Cancer: A Critical Review
o Despite the profession placing great emphasis on oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) as a gateway for early recognition and consequently better outcomes for oral cancer, the death rates for lip and oral cavity cancer have remained stagnant for three decades. Evidence shows that only a small fraction of oral cancers are in fact preceded by OPMDs, and that most OPMDs have an annual transformation rate of less than 1%. As OPMDs encompass a very heterogeneous group of oral conditions, it could be argued that only patients with oral mucosal diseases bearing a substantial risk of malignant transformation warrant c...

The incidence of osteoradionecrosis of the jaws in oral cavity cancer patients treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis
A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to define the incidence of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in patients with oral cavity cancer (OCC) treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and to identify the risk factors influencing its development. Role of Imaging in Predicting the Deep Surgical Margin in Gingivobuccal Complex Cancers: A Pilot Study
AbstractCancers arising from the gingivobuccal complex are one of the most common types of cancer in the oral cavity and are associated with poor prognosis. Among the various prognostic factors, positive surgical margin is the most important one that can be controlled by the operating surgeon. The deep surgical margins for buccal mucosa cancers is normally assessed by palpating the skin for induration and skin pinchability. The present study evaluates the role of imaging in assessing the deep surgical margin and its efficacy for skin preservation in buccal mucosa/ gingivobuccal carcinomas. The patients of gingivobuccal com...

Can predictive factors determine the time to treatment initiation for oral and oropharyngeal cancer? A classification and regression tree analysis
by D ébora Rosana Alves Braga Silva Montagnoli, Vitória Ferreira Leite, Yasmim Silva Godoy, Vitória Marçolla Lafetá, Edmilson Antônio Pereira Junior, Akhilanand Chaurasia, Maria Cássia Ferreira Aguiar, Mauro Henrique Nogueira Guimarães Abreu, Renata Castro Martins This ecological study aimed to identify the factors with the greatest power to discriminate the proportion of oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OOC) records with time to treatment initiation (TTI) within 30 days of diagnosis in Brazilian municipalities. A descriptive analysis was performed on the var iables grouped into five dimensions related to patient ch...

Comparison of 3-year local control using DAHANCA radiotherapy guidelines before and after implementation of five millimetres geometrical GTV to high-dose CTV margin
Primary radiotherapy is the preferred anatomy-preserving treatment for squamous cell carcinomas in the head and neck region (HNSCC), excluding carcinomas in the oral cavity or certain localised oropharyngeal/laryngeal cancers amenable to surgery[1,2]. Platinum-based chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) using IMRT/VMAT techniques is the contemporary standard for loco-regionally advanced HNSCC, with a five-year risk of local and regional failures of 23.5  % and 20.2 %, respectively, using altered fractionation regimes [3]. A Prospective Cohort Study on Neck Lymph Node Mapping in Oral Cancers Using Methylene Blue Dye
AbstractIn the current scenario, the management of N0 neck in early-stage oral cancer is debatable, whether or not they should undergo elective neck dissection. Most of the time these patients are either over-treated or under-treated. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a good option to identify occult LN in this cohort of patients for guiding neck dissection. With a focus on SLN biopsy using methylene blue dye, this study aims to evaluate its feasibility and accuracy in node-negative oral squamous cell carcinoma. A prospective observational study was conducted involving operable squamous cell carcinoma patients with clini...
