Role of MRI in Evaluation of Tongue and Hypopharyngeal Lesions
AbstractTongue is a complex, principally muscular structure extending from oral cavity to oropharynx. Hypopharynx extends from the level of hyoid bone and to the level of inferior margin of cricoid cartilage and is divided into pyriform sinus, posterior cricoid region and posterior pharyngeal wall. Lesions that can affect the tongue and hypopharynx include neoplastic, congenital, vascular and infectious etiologies. Imaging provides crucial details for diagnosis and the appropriate management of these lesions. To evaluate the role of MRI in characterisation of benign and malignant lesions of tongue, malignant lesions of hyp...

Multiple primary head and neck squamous cell cancer: Lessons learnt
CONCLUSION: A higher percentage of MPHNSCC originated from the oral cavity and the majority presented in the locally advanced stage of disease; despite the site being accessible to self-oral examination. Patient education and physician's awareness regarding the MPHNSCC are needed.PMID:38384035 | DOI:10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_392_22 (Source: Cell Research)

Lung cancer metastasizing to salivary glands: Systematic review
J Cancer Res Ther. 2023 Jan 1;19(Suppl 2):S490-S498. doi: 10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_2699_22. Epub 2023 Feb 1.ABSTRACTMetastasis to salivary glands from the secondary source outside the head and neck region is extremely rare and Carcinoma Lung is one of the rarest sources of distant spread to salivary glands. Owing to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, accurate identification of clinical and pathological aspects of these metastatic lesions remains a challenging task. Many studies regarding metastasis to the oral cavity have been already documented in the literature, but very little research work has been done to analyse the cases o...

Disease control and late toxicity in Adaptive Dose Painting by Numbers vs. non-adaptive radiotherapy for head and neck cancer: a randomized controlled phase II trial
CONCLUSION: A-DPBN resulted in superior 1- and 2-year LC for HNC compared to S-IMRT. This supports further exploration in multicenter phase III trials. It will however be challenging to recruit a substantial patient sample for such trials as concerns have arisen on the association of late mucosal ulcers when escalating the dose in continuing smokers.PMID:38387811 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.01.012 (Source: Health Physics)

Extranodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma nasal type simulating osteoradionecrosis with metachronic B lymphoma in the pelvis: Case report
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2024 Jan-Mar;67(1):162-165. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_296_22.ABSTRACTExtranodal Natural Killer/T Cell Lymphoma Nasal Type (EN-NK/T-CL-NT) is a non-Hodgkin extranodal lymphoma of unfavorable prognosis due to its aggressive nature. This neoplasm mainly affects the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, oropharynx, oral cavity, palate, and rarely intestinal, gastric and skin regions. 50-year-old female with a history of lymphoma in nasal and pelvic region. At four years of tumors-free, has facial asymmetry, accompanied by sub-palpebral, nasal and lip edema. Intraoral examination revealed a large ulceration su...

Adequacy of clinical guideline recommendations for patients with low-risk cancer managed with monitoring: Systematic review
CONCLUSION: With the exception of prostate cancer, the evidence base for monitoring low-risk cancer is weak and consequently recommendations in clinical guidelines are inconsistent. There is a lack of direct evidence to support monitoring recommendations in the literature making guideline developers reliant on expert opinion, alternative guidelines, or indirect or non-specific evidence.PMID:38360377 | DOI:10.1016/j.jclinepi.2024.111280 (Source: Clinical Prostate Cancer)

Oral Cavity Cancers: Ethnic Differences in Radiotherapy Outcomes in a Majority South Asian Leicester Community
Squamous cell carcinoma oral cavity cancers (SCCOCCs) have a higher reported incidence in South Asian countries. We sought to compare presenting stage and outcome by ethnicity in patients with SCCOCC treated with radical radiotherapy in a single centre in the UK. (Source: Clinical Oncology)

Tumor volume and cancer stem cell expression as prognostic markers for high-dose loco-regional failure in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma - a DAHANCA 19 study
CONCLUSION: Tumor volume, p16, and CSC markers are potential biomarkers for HDF for patients with HNSCC treated with (C-)RT. Lower expression of CSC in p16+ OPSCC may contribute to better tumor control.PMID:38341096 | DOI:10.1016/j.radonc.2024.110149 (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology : journal of the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology)

Impact of pretreatment quality of life on tolerance and survival outcome in head and neck cancer patients undergoing definitive CCRT
CONCLUSION: In patients with HNC planned for definitive CCRT, pre-treatment HRQoL was significantly associated with treatment-related complications, tolerance, and survival outcomes. Furthermore, our results validated the clinical value of QLQ-HN35 as an indicator for predicting treatment tolerance and outcomes.PMID:38331637 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.022 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)
