Microdose lithium reduces cellular senescence in human astrocytes - a potential pharmacotherapy for COVID-19?
Abstract Cell senescence is a process that causes growth arrest and the release of a senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP), characterized by secretion of chemokines, cytokines, cell growth factors and metalloproteases, leading to a tissue condition that may precipitate cancers and neurodegenerative processes. With the recent pandemic of coronavirus, senolytic drugs are being considered as possible therapeutic tools to reduce the virulence of SARS-CoV-2. In the last few years, our research group showed that lithium carbonate at microdose levels was able to stabilize memory and change neuropatholo...

Effective Preoperative Plasmapheresis Treatment of Severe Hyperthyroidism in a Patient with Giant Toxic Nodular Goiter and Methimazole-Induced Agranulocytosis.
This report describes the therapeutic difficulties and successful preoperative treatment with plasmapheresis in a 63-year-old patient admitted to the Endocrinology Clinic with severe hyperthyroidism, during the course of giant toxic nodular goiter and agranulocytosis, which occurred after 2 weeks of taking methimazole. During hospitalization, methimazole treatment was discontinued and therapy with steroids, a beta blocker, propylthiouracil, Lugol's solution, lithium carbonate, and antibiotics were initiated. Granulocyte colony growth stimulating factor was also used to resolve agranulocytosis. Due to the failure to achieve...

Dosimetric properties of Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P solid detector.
Abstract This work presents results obtained following the preparation of lithium borate by the chemical reaction between lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) and boric acid (H3BO3), doping the host salt of lithium borate (Li2B4O7) with ions of copper, silver and phosphorus. With the obtained material dosimeters were produced in sintered pellet form which were exposed by gamma radiation that emitted from 60Co source. The highest sensitivity was found for the sample of Li2B4O7:Cu,Ag,P (in pellet form) with 0.45, 0.45 and 12 mol% of Cu, Ag and P, respectively, subjected to a thermal treatment at 1123 K during 2 h. ...

Effect of lithium carbonate on autophagy and proliferative activity of isolated hepatocytes.
Abstract The hepatocytes were cultivated in the presence of lithium carbonate (LC) for drugs testing or possible source for transplantation in the treatment of hereditary or terminal liver diseases. The LC, as an inducer of autophagy, is a promising drug for maintaining cell homeostasis and has a significant effect on the ultrastructural organization of hepatocyte cells. Within current investigation, new mechanisms of the biological effects of lithium and the ultrastructural analysis of the primary culture of hepatocytes were studied via flow cytofluorometry, light, and electron microscopy methods. Obtaine...

Phase I Trial of Lithium and Tretinoin for Treatment of Relapsed and Refractory Non-promyelocytic Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3) inhibitors induce differentiation and growth inhibition of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. Our pre-clinical studies showed GSK3 inhibition leads to sensitization of AML cells to tretinoin-mediated differentiation. We conducted a phase I trial of lithium, a GSK3 inhibitor, plus tretinoin for relapsed, refractory non-promyelocytic AML. Nine patients with median (range) age 65 (42–82) years were enrolled. All subjects had relapsed leukemia after prior therapy, with a median (range) of 3 (1–3) prior therapies. Oral lithium carbonate 300 mg was given 2–3 times daily and adjusted to me...

Lithium Use in a Patient With Bipolar Disorder and End-Stage Kidney Disease on Hemodialysis: A Case Report
Lithium has been implicated in causing chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis and decline in renal function. However, lithium still plays a role in stabilizing patients with bipolar disorder. We illustrated a case of a bipolar I disorder patient approaching end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) with other medical comorbidities. As her mental state was affecting her compliance with medical treatment, she was mentally and medically unwell. Our patient was hospitalized on two separate occasions, for 5 and 4 months respectively, and failed adequate trials of different psychotropics due to inefficacy or intolerable side effects. A deci...

Synergetic effect of secondary nucleation and growth on the lithium carbonate particle size in the gas–liquid reactive crystallization of LiCl–NH3·H2O–CO2
In this study, the gas‒liquid reactive crystallization of LiCl–NH3·H2O–CO2 was adopted to produce Li2CO3. The weakly alkaline nature of NH3·H2O in the absence of any recarbonation process resulted in a unimodal and easily controllable particle size distribution (PSD) of the obtained Li2CO3. The reaction temperature significantly influenced both the Li2CO3 particle size and PSD. By increasing the temperature from 25 to 60 °C, the volume weighted mean particle size increased from 50.5 to 100.5 μm, respectively. The Li2CO3 secondary nucleation rate and growth rate were obtained by focused beam reflectance measur...

Lithium effects on vesicular trafficking in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.
Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most commonly malignant tumors worldwide, characterized by the presence of many heterogeneous molecular cell events that contribute to tumor growth and progression. Endocytic processes are intimately involved in various pathological conditions, including cancer, since they interface with various cellular signaling programs. The ability of lithium to induce cell death and autophagy and affect cell proliferation and intracellular signaling has been shown in various experimental tumor models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of lithium on ...
