Publication date: 15 May 2018 Source:Cell Reports, Volume 23, Issue 7 Author(s): Stephen A. Martin, Dylan C. Souder, Karl N. Miller, Josef P. Clark, Abdul Kader Sagar, Kevin W. Eliceiri, Luigi Puglielli, T. Mark Beasley, Rozalyn M. Anderson GSK3β is a serine threonine kinase implicated in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Although the role of GSK3β in growth and pathology has been extensively studied, little is known about the metabolic consequences of GSK3β manipulation, particularly in the brain. Here, we show that GSK3β regulates mitochondrial energy metabolism in human H4 neuroglioma cells and ra...

Inhibition of the dopamine transporter as an animal model of bipolar disorder mania: Locomotor response, neuroimmunological profile and pharmacological modulation
Publication date: Available online 6 April 2018 Source:Journal of Psychiatric Research Author(s): Juliana R. Bastos, Katherinne M. Perico, Érica L. Marciano Vieira, Antônio L. Teixeira, Fabiana S. Machado, Aline S. de Miranda, Fabrício A. Moreira Inhibition of dopamine transporter (DAT) by GBR12909 has been proposed as a pharmacological model of mania related to bipolar disorder (BD). Here we tested the hypothesis that GBR12909 injection impairs habituation and induces hyperlocomotion in mice, along with changes in cytokines and neurotrophic factors levels, as observed in BD patients. We also tested if lithium ...

Microstructure of ultra high performance concrete containing lithium slag
Publication date: 5 July 2018 Source:Journal of Hazardous Materials, Volume 353 Author(s): Zhi-hai He, Shi-gui Du, Deng Chen Lithium slag (LS) is discharged as a byproduct in the process of the lithium carbonate, and it is very urgent to explore an efficient way to recycle LS in order to protect the environments and save resources. Many available supplementary cementitious materials for partial replacement of cement and/or silica fume (SF) can be used to prepare ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). The effect of LS to replace SF partially by weight used as a supplementary cementitious material (0%, 5%, 10% and 15% ...

Stabilizing effect of ion complex formation in lithium –oxygen battery electrolytes
Publication date: Available online 8 March 2018 Source:Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry Author(s): Amir Chamaani, Meer Safa, Neha Chawla, Marcus Herndon, Bilal El-Zahab Glyme-based electrolytes with various lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonamide (LiTFSI) salt concentrations have been investigated for their use in Li‑oxygen battery applications. Charge/discharge cycling with a cycle capacity of 500 mAh·g−1 showed an improvement as high as 300% for electrolytes containing higher LiTFSI concentrations. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies of full batteries and Raman spectroscopy studies ...

Clinical Features of Machado-Joseph Disease.
Authors: Mendonça N, França MC, Gonçalves AF, Januário C Abstract Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) also known as Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3, is a hereditary neurodegenerative disease associated with severe clinical manifestations and premature death. Although rare, it is the most common autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia worldwide and has a distinct geographic distribution, reaching peak prevalence in certain regions of Brazil, Portugal and China. Due to its clinical heterogeneity, it was initially described as several different entities and as had many designations over the last decades. An accu...

Pharmacological management of agitation among individuals with moderate to severe acquired brain injury: A systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: Studies consistently demonstrated that pharmacological treatment was effective in reducing agitation post ABI; however, there was insufficient information to develop a conclusion due to the limited number of studies and overall weakness of evidence for each individual medication. Lithium-associated nephropathy in the renal allograft
A 58-year-old man, the recipient of a kidney transplant, was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of impairment of renal allograft function. The patient had a medical history of bipolar disorder since 1989, which required long-term treatment with lithium carbonate (Li). Eight years later, he developed end-stage renal disease, and, at that time, a native kidney biopsy showed chronic interstitial nephropathy. The patient started hemodialysis, and 1 year later he received a  kidney transplant from a deceased donor. (Source: Kidney International)

Lithium prevents scopolamine-induced memory impairment in zebrafish
We examined whether lithium carbonate (Li2CO3, 100mg/L) is able to prevent memory impairment induced by scopolamine. Moreover, we evaluated the effects of lithium on anxiety-like behavior and acetylcholinesterase activity in adult zebrafish. We demonstrated that lithium prevents the memory impairment induced by scopolamine, decreases exploration and increases the activity of acetylcholinesterase in zebrafish. Collectively, this contributes to a better understanding of the pharmacology of lithium, its interaction with cholinergic neurotransmission, and its possible application to therapeutic treatments aimed at improving co...

MnCo2O4/MoO2 Nanosheets Grown on Ni foam as Carbon- and Binder-free Cathode for Lithium-Oxygen Batteries with Long Life and High Efficiency.
Abstract Carbon is usually used as cathode material for Li-O2 batteries. However, the discharge product, such as Li2O2 and LiO2, could react with carbon to form insulating lithium carbonate layer, resulting in cathode passivation and capacity fading. To solve this problem, the development of non-carbon cathode is highly demanded. Herein, we have successfully synthesized MnCo2O4 (MCO) nanoparticles anchored on porous MoO2 nanosheets that are grown on Ni foam (current collector) (MCO/MoO2@Ni), acting as a carbon- and binder-free cathode for Li-O2 batteries, in an attempt to improve the electrical conductivit...

A case of myxedema coma induced by lithium carbonate in a patient with schizophrenia
We present a rare case of myxedema coma (MC), the most extreme manifestation of hypothyroidism, induced by lithium carbonate (Li) in a patient with schizophrenia. A 68‐year‐old man presented to the emergency department due to unconsciousness. After developing schizophrenia, he had been living in a nursing home for the previous 40 years; he had no any other physical illness. (Source: Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences)

Characterization of potassium doped Li2ZrO3 based CO2 sorbents: Stability properties and CO2 desorption kinetics
Publication date: 15 March 2018 Source:Chemical Engineering Journal, Volume 336 Author(s): D. Peltzer, J. Mùnera, L. Cornaglia, M. Strumendo In this work, potassium doped and undoped Li2ZrO3-based sorbents for CO2 capture at high temperatures were synthesized through wet impregnation of Li and K salts over a colloidal suspension of zirconia nanoparticles. The synthesized sorbents were characterized by XRD and Raman spectroscopy, and the CO2 sorption/desorption properties of the sorbents were investigated by in-situ Raman spectroscopy and by thermogravimetric analysis at different temperatures and CO2 partial pressur...
