Neuroprotective substances: are they able to protect the pancreatic beta-cells too?
CONCLUSION: The presented data indicate that the neuroprotective substances attenuating the damaging effect of oxidative stress and neurotrophins deficit cannot only protect neurons but also exert their cytoprotective effect towards pancreatic β-cells. These data may provide a theoretical basis for the further study of neuroprotective drugs as potential therapeutic options for T2D prevention and treatment.PMID:35240968 | DOI:10.2174/1871530322666220303162844 (Source: Endocrine, Metabolic and Immune Disorders Drug Targets)

Association between depression in chronic phase and future clinical outcome of patients with schizophrenia
ConclusionsA history of depression or suicidal symptoms in the chronic phase predicted the future worse clinical outcome in patients with schizophrenia. The administration of lithium carbonate or antidepressants might be recommended, especially to male schizophrenia patients with depression. (Source: Psychopharmacology)

Age-related GSK3β overexpression drives podocyte senescence and glomerular aging
As life expectancy continues to increase, clinicians are challenged by age-related renal impairment that involves podocyte senescence and glomerulosclerosis. There is now compelling evidence that lithium has a potent antiaging activity that ameliorates brain aging and increases longevity in Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans. As the major molecular target of lithium action and a multitasking protein kinase recently implicated in a variety of renal diseases, glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) is overexpressed and hyperactive with age in glomerular podocytes, correlating with functional and histological signs of kidney...

Personality profile and therapeutic response to lithium carbonate and sodium valproate in mania with psychotic features
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between personality profile and the response to lithium carbonate and sodium valproate in patients with psychotic mania. In this study, 50 patients with bipolar I disorder (manic episode with psychotic features) were randomly assigned to receive lithium carbonate (up to a serum level of 0.8-1.5 mEq/L) or sodium valproate (20 mg/kg). After stabilization of acute manic phase, Temperament and Character Inventory was completed by the patients themselves. Fifty subjects completed this study. The mean age ± SD of participants in the sodium valproate group and lithium carbonate gr...

ESR dosimetry with lithium, potassium, and sodium compounds
Appl Radiat Isot. 2022 Jan 13;181:110105. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2022.110105. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work consists of a first investigation of materials that could be used as ESR dosimeters with doses up to 5 Gy aiming possible applications that would include retrospective dosimetry or dosimetry in specific applications. The characteristics considered were radiological properties close to that of soft tissues, evaluated through their effective atomic number and mass attenuation coefficient, ESR signal dependence on the irradiation dose, sensitivity to dose in the range of ∼5 Gy when exposed to a 50 kV x-ray ...

Preventive Effects of Lithium Carbonate on Antidepressant-Induced Switch During Depressive Episodes: Chinese Data Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: As typical mood stabilizer, lithium carbonate can reduce the antidepressant-induced switch rates in patients with depressive episodes regardless of the type of antidepressant and the type of depressive episode. Further research should compare the effectiveness of lithium carbonate to that of other mood stabilizers in preventing switching associated with antidepressants.PMID:34559689 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Lithium Carbonate: Updated Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity Assessment Using Scientific Literature and Guideline Compliant Studies
Toxicology. 2021 Aug 26:152907. doi: 10.1016/j.tox.2021.152907. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current publication describes most recent so far unpublished (key) guideline and GLP compliant reproductive and developmental toxicity studies of lithium carbonate in rats, including their interpretation and conclusions in terms of human hazard assessment when compared to existing literature. Particular attention was paid to the target organs and dose response of lithium ion related effects to differentiate between a primary (pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic) action and secondary effects as a result of systemic and target organ...
