Candidate Psychotropics against SARS  – CoV – 2: A Narrative Review
Pharmacopsychiatry DOI: 10.1055/a-1551-3756Since few therapeutic options are clinically accessible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), effective, safe, and globally available pharmaceuticals need to be urgently developed to prevent severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and alleviate the severity of COVID-19. In this regard, the present paper is intended to provide an extensive review of the clinical and preclinical evidence on the psychotropics’ anti-SARS-CoV-2 effects, giving an insight into their potential applications for patients with a proven or high likelihood of COVID-19 pneumon...

Enhancing continuous reactive crystallization of lithium carbonate in multistage mixed suspension mixed product removal crystallizers with pulsed ultrasound
Ultrason Sonochem. 2021 Aug 2;77:105698. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2021.105698. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, pulsed ultrasound was used to facilitate steady-state reactive crystallization and increase the final yield and productivity of lithium carbonate in continuously operated single and multistage mixed suspension mixed product removal (MSMPR) crystallizers. Experimental analyses of the stirred tank MSMPR cascade were performed to investigate the effects of ultrasound field, residence time and temperature which contributed to the steady-state yield, crystal size distribution and crystal morphology. The resu...

Influence of distant tumor growth and lithium treatment on ultrastructural organization of kidney proximal tubules
Ultrastruct Pathol. 2021 Jul 25:1-12. doi: 10.1080/01913123.2021.1954735. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTumor growth causes significant metabolic disturbances, tissue damage and the accumulation of toxic metabolites in the blood. The kidney is an organ with highly developed capillary network and therefore can be exposed to toxic metabolites. Here, the proximal renal tubule cells were studied by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, on a model of hepatocellular carcinoma-29 growth in the thigh of CBA mice and lithium carbonate treatment. An increase of autophagy markers (LC3 and LAMP-1) expression was revealed under...

Lithium orotate: A superior option for lithium therapy?
AbstractBipolar disorder (BD) poses a significant public health concern, with roughly one-quarter of sufferers attempting suicide. BD is characterized by manic and depressive mood cycles, the recurrence of which can be effectively curtailed through lithium therapy. Unfortunately, the most frequently employed lithium salt, lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), is associated with a host of adverse health outcomes following chronic use: these unwanted effects range from relatively minor inconveniences (e.g., polydipsia and polyuria) to potentially major complications (e.g., hypothyroidism and/or renal impairment). As these undesirable ...

Low Dose Lithium Treatment of Behavioral Complications in Alzheimer's Disease: Lit-AD Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Low-dose lithium was not efficacious in treating agitation but was associated with global clinical improvement and excellent safety. A larger trial may be warranted of likely lithium-responsive behavioral symptoms that overlap with mania.PMID:34059401 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2021.04.014 (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

Enhanced Neural Differentiation of Epidermal Neural Crest Stem Cell by Synergistic Effect of ...
In this study, the effect of Lithium carbonate and Crocin, with considering of their effects on cellular signaling pathways and neuroprotective properties were investigated on expression of neurotrophic factors BDNF and GDNF in EPI-NCSCs.EPI-NCSCs were isolated from hair follicle and after 72 hours of treatment with different concentration of drugs [Lithium, Crocin and lithium + Crocin], and trial doses were selected by MTT assay. The cells were treated with selected concentration (Lithium 1 mM, Crocin 1.5 mM, and for co-treatment Lithium 1mM and Crocin 1 mM) for 7 days. The Real Time PCR results indicated an increasing in ...

Green tea extract modulates lithium-induced thyroid follicular cell damage in rats
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, prolonged use of LC results in hypothyroidism, which is accompanied by structural thyroid damage. LC induced thyroid damage through oxidative stress that prompted sterile inflammation and apoptosis. With the use of GTE, the thyroid gland achieved its structure and function. The protecting role of GTE is through antioxidant, antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects.PMID:34018174 | DOI:10.5603/FM.a2021.0052 (Source: Folia Morphologica)
