Lithium-associated nephropathy in the renal allograft

A 58-year-old man, the recipient of a kidney transplant, was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of impairment of renal allograft function. The patient had a medical history of bipolar disorder since 1989, which required long-term treatment with lithium carbonate (Li). Eight years later, he developed end-stage renal disease, and, at that time, a native kidney biopsy showed chronic interstitial nephropathy. The patient started hemodialysis, and 1 year later he received a  kidney transplant from a deceased donor.
