Computational model of engagement with stigmatised sentiment: COVID and general vaccine discourse on social media
AbstractThe growth rate of new social media users continues to surpass new Internet users and new unique mobile phone subscribers and this trend remains consistent over the past 5 years (2019 –2023). The most frequently visited types of websites or apps worldwide are chat and messaging, closely followed by social networks and this trend has also remained relatively constant. The dominating role of social media, especially as a source for information seeking, is staggering, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the research in Keller et al. (J Mec Internet Res 16:e8, 2014) indicates that not many experts co...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 532: Assessing the Vulnerability and Adaptation Needs of Mozambique & rsquo;s Health Sector to Climate: A Comprehensive Study
This study aims to assess Mozambique’s health sector’s vulnerability and adaptation needs to climate change. Following a methodology proposed by the World Health Organization and the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, a six-step vulnerability and adaptation assessment was conducted to conduct the Health Vulnerability Index (HVI) for Mozambique’s regions (n=161). The HVI integrates historical climate, epidemiological, and socio-economic data at the district level, and was computed using exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity dimensions. The results revealed spatial pa...

Nicotine and Alcohol Use as Predictors of Recreational Cannabis Use in Adolescence: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis
Conclusion: Current evidence suggests an association between nicotine-product use and subsequent recreational cannabis use among adolescents. However, further research is needed to establish causality between exposure to nicotine substances and the use of recreational cannabis within this age demographic. Additionally, there is a need for the development of prevention programs and targeted policies that continuously inform and update this vulnerable sub-population about the risks associated with cannabis use for leisure.PMID:38658323 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2342008 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Perioperative Use of Antibiotics as Infection Prophylaxis in Elective Wrist Arthroscopy: A Nationwide Survey
CONCLUSIONS: The use of PAP in wrist arthroscopies in Germany is inconsistent. The increased use in arthroscopies with bone involvement corresponds to AWMF guidelines, but a general recommendation for wrist arthroscopies, including soft tissue arthroscopies, is necessary to provide physicians with medical and legal certainty.PMID:38657620 | DOI:10.1055/a-2273-4864 (Source: Handchirurgie Mikrochirurgie Plastische Chirurgie)

"I'm still in the lap of the gods … I don't know whether I'm going to improve or not": listening to people with dementia or cognitive impairment and their support people, talking about inpatient rehabilitation experiences
CONCLUSIONS: Practical, emotional, process-related, and dementia-specific factors may influence the experiences of people living with dementia or cognitive impairment when participating in inpatient rehabilitation. Future research could investigate whether improvements focused on these factors might enhance quality of care for people with dementia.PMID:38655713 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2343822 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

The experimental physiologist Carl Ludwig (1816-1895): Scientific genius - modest, selfless, unswerving!
Pneumologie. 2024 Apr 24. doi: 10.1055/a-2293-1235. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarl Ludwig was, besides Johannes Müller, one of the most prolific natural scientists of the 19th century. Carl Ludwig believed that the function of organs can be ascribed to the laws of physics and chemistry and that only through repeatable physiological experiments can hypotheses be verified. Ludwig has laid the technological foundations for experimental physiology. The "kymographion", (waves-recorder), the "stromuhr" and the blood gas pump are some of his developments that underline this fact. Together with his students he performed funda...

Limb Outcomes With Ticagrelor Plus Aspirin in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus and Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with T2DM and atherosclerosis are at high risk of limb events. Ticagrelor decreased this risk, but increased bleeding. Future trials evaluating the combination of ticagrelor and aspirin would further elucidate the benefit/risk of such therapy in patients with PAD, including those without coronary artery disease. (A Study Comparing Cardiovascular Effects of Ticagrelor Versus Placebo in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus [THEMIS]: NCT01991795).PMID:38658101 | DOI:10.1016/j.jacc.2024.03.377 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Prostate-specific Membrane Antigen: Alpha-labeled Radiopharmaceuticals
PET Clin. 2024 Apr 23:S1556-8598(24)00018-X. doi: 10.1016/j.cpet.2024.03.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNovel prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligands labeled with α-emitting radionuclides are sparking a growing interest in prostate cancer treatment. These targeted alpha therapies (TATs) have attractive physical properties that deem them effective in progressive metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Among the PSMA TAT radiopharmaceuticals, [225Ac]Ac-PSMA has been used extensively on a compassionate basis and is currently undergoing phase I trials. Notably, TAT has the potential to improve qua...

Effects of Cannabidiol and Δ < sup > 9 < /sup > -Tetrahydrocannabinol on Cytochrome P450 Enzymes: A Systematic Review
The objective of this review is to evaluate the effect of CBD and THC on the activity of CYP450 enzymes and the implications for drug-drug interactions (DDIs) with psychotropic agents that are CYP substrates. A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and PsychINFO. Search terms included 'cannabidiol', 'tetrahydrocannabinol and 'cytochrome P450'. A total of seven studies evaluating the interaction of THC and CBD with CYP450 enzymes and psychotropic drugs were included. Both preclinical and clinical studies were included. Results from the included studies indicate th...

Socioeconomic Disparities in Online Patient Portal Utilization Among Total Knee Arthroplasty Recipients
Since 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have mandated that patients have open access to their medical records. Many institutions use online portals, which allow patients to access their health information and communicate with care teams. Our research aimed to evaluate demographic patterns for online patient portal utilization in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Further, we assessed if and how portal engagement contributes to perioperative outcomes. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)
