An Update on Brain Death/Death by Neurologic Criteria since the World Brain Death Project
Semin Neurol DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786020The World Brain Death Project (WBDP) is a 2020 international consensus statement that provides historical background and recommendations on brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC) determination. It addresses 13 topics including: (1) worldwide variance in BD/DNC, (2) the science of BD/DNC, (3) the concept of BD/DNC, (4) minimum clinical criteria for BD/DNC determination, (5) beyond minimum clinical BD/DNC determination, (6) pediatric and neonatal BD/DNC determination, (7) BD/DNC determination in patients on ECMO, (8) BD/DNC determination after treatment with targeted tempera...

Ophthalmic features of Lamb-Shaffer syndrome: a case series
We present a case series of 6 pediatric patients with LSS and describe its ophthalmic manifestations. Strabismus was present in 5 patients, with exotropia being most common. All subjects had significant refractive errors; 5 had astigmatism of at least 2 D. All patients had optic nerve abnormalities, including pallor (4), hypoplasia (2), and anomalous appearance (1), with retinal nerve fiber layer thinning demonstrated in a single subject. Crystal Structure of Bimekizumab Fab Fragment in Complex with IL-17F Provides Molecular Basis for Dual IL-17A and IL-17F Inhibition
Psoriasis (PSO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are Th17-driven inflammatory diseases where interleukin (IL)-17 cytokines like IL-17A and IL-17F promote disease pathogenesis. There are six IL-17 isoforms (IL-17A –F) and five IL-17 receptors (IL-17RA–E; Liu et al., 2020). IL-17 cytokines primarily function as homodimers, although IL-17A and IL-17F can heterodimerize (Brembilla et al., 2018). IL-17A and IL-17F genes share the same chromosomal location (6p12), their proteins share ∼55% sequence homology, and both cytokines signal through the IL-17RA/RC heterodimeric complex (Brembilla et al., 2018, Liu et al., 2020). (Sou...

Voluntary wheel running as a promising strategy to promote autonomic resilience to social stress in females: Vagal tone lies at the heart of the matter
Social stress is a major risk factor for comorbid conditions including cardiovascular disease and depression. While women exhibit 2 –3× the risk for these stress-related conditions compared to men, the mechanisms underlying heightened stress susceptibility among females remain largely unknown. Due to a lack in understanding of the pathophysiology underlying stress-induced comorbidities among women, there has been a significan t challenge in developing effective therapeutics. Recently, a causal role for inflammation has been established in the onset and progression of comorbid cardiovascular disease/depression, with wome...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 479: No Women & rsquo;s Land: Australian Women Veterans & rsquo; Experiences of the Culture of Military Service and Transition
This study sought to understand the role and impact of gender in the context of the dominant masculinized culture on women veterans’ experiences of military service and transition to civilian life. In-depth qualitative interviews with 22 Australian women veterans elicited four themes: (1) Fitting in a managing identity with the military; (2) Gender-based challenges in conforming to a masculinized culture—proving worthiness, assimilation, and survival strategies within that culture; (3) Women are valued less than men—consequences for women veterans, including misogyny, sexual harass...

Informed consent in clinical practice: Old problems, new challenges
J R Coll Physicians Edinb. 2024 Apr 14:14782715241247087. doi: 10.1177/14782715241247087. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInformed consent is a fundamental tenet of patient-centred clinical practice as it upholds the ethical principle of patient autonomy and promotes shared decision-making. In the medicolegal realm, failure to meet the accepted standards of consent can be considered as medical negligence which has both legal and professional implications. In general, valid consent requires three core components: (1) the presence of mental capacity - characterised by the patient's ability to comprehend, retain information, we...

Variations in thyroid hormone levels in endangered St. Lawrence Estuary belugas: Potential linkage with stress and organohalogen contaminant exposure
The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of concentrations of organohalogen contaminants and stress (cortisol levels) on thyroid hormone variations in adult male and female SLE belugas. Because plasma could not be collected in SLE belugas for ethical reasons, skin biopsy (n = 40) was used as a less-invasive alternative matrix to determine organohalogens (PBDEs and other halogenated flame retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls, and organochlorine pesticides), cortisol, and thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine [T3] and thyroxine [T4]), and their metabolites reverse T3 and 3,5-diiodothyronine [3,5-T2]). Cortisol...

Evaluating automatically generated normal tissue contours for safe use in head and neck and cervical cancer treatment planning
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that dosimetrically equivalent normal tissue contours can be created for HN and cervical cancers using deep learning techniques. In general, differences between the contours did not affect the passing or failing of clinical dose tolerances.PMID:38610118 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.14338 (Source: Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics)
