The U.S. has a new way to mask census data in the name of privacy. How does it affect accuracy?
U.S. residents who fill out the census questionnaire every 10 years are told their answers will remain confidential. But that promise from the U.S. Census Bureau comes with a statistical caveat: The stronger the privacy shield, the less accurate the data. That trade-off, long familiar to researchers, became a hot-button issue after the government adopted a new approach to protecting privacy for the 2020 census. Many demographers worried the new method would degrade the quality of census data, which are used not just for academic studies, but also for drawing congressional districts and allocating federal funds. But n...

Questionable firms tempt young doctors with 'easy' publications
Last year, physician Rupak Desai co-authored more than three dozen conference abstracts in Circulation , the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) flagship journal. The works marked a modest fraction of his publications in 2023 , which totaled 162. But Desai, scholarly productivity notwithstanding, is not employed by a hospital, university, nor any other type of scientific institution. Based in Atlanta, Desai runs a business that offers junior doctors from around the world a chance to beef up their CVs before applying for coveted residency or fellowship positions at hospitals or physi...

Pediatric Support for Children Eligible for Legal Humanitarian Relief
Pediatr Ann. 2024 May;53(5):e183-e188. doi: 10.3928/19382359-20240306-04. Epub 2024 May 1.ABSTRACTMany children in immigrant families may qualify for legal protection-for themselves if unaccompanied, or as a derivative on parents' claims-on humanitarian grounds related to persecution or forced migration. Pediatric providers can offer a spectrum of multidirectional medical-legal supports to increase access to medical-legal services and support children who are undocumented or in mixed-status families. These activities can include providing trusted information, incorporating screening for health-related social needs, establi...

Deprivation of liberty and the community nurse
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 May 2;29(5):214-216. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.5.214.ABSTRACTIn this month's Policy column, Iwan Dowie discusses the 'deprivation of liberty' - which is used to safeguard patients who may be lacking sufficient mental capacity to manage their own safety. The author, through previous legal cases, shares how the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)-an amendment to the Mental Capacity Act 2005-came into being, and the importance of community nurses in knowing the DoLS.PMID:38701011 | DOI:10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.5.214 (Source: British Journal of Community Nursing)

United States marijuana legalization and opioid mortality trends before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: During the past decade, marijuana legalization in the US was associated at the jurisdiction level with a greater acceleration in opioid death rate. An even greater increase in opioid mortality occurred in recreational-legalizing jurisdictions with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Marijuana legalization is correlated with worsening of the US opioid epidemic.PMID:38700393 | DOI:10.5055/jom.0829 (Source: Journal of Opioid Management)

Terrorist attacks against healthcare facilities involving hostages
This study shows that terrorist attacks against healthcare facilities that involve -hostage-taking have increased in frequency over the past 10 years and have global reach. Systems may still be underprepared for this potentially increasing phenomenon and require preparedness plans with education and simulated practice in place. Healthcare facilities should consider mitigation strategies such as preparedness drills and additional education.PMID:38698512 | DOI:10.5055/ajdm.0478 (Source: American Journal of Disaster Medicine)

Changes in Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Across Retirement Transition as a Predictor of Self-Rated Health
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a cross-sectional association between MVPA and greater odds of reporting better SRH before retirement. No longitudinal associations were observed between changes in the PA variables from before to after retirement and later changes in SRH.PMID:38702051 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2023-0558 (Source: Journal of Physical Activity and Health)

Effects of Acute Hyperoxia on Autonomic Function and Coronary Tone in Patients with Peripheral Artery Disease
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2024 May 3. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00225.2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNumerous studies have shown that oxidative stress plays an important role in peripheral artery disease (PAD). Prior reports suggested autonomic dysfunction in PAD. We hypothesized that responses of the autonomic nervous system and coronary tone would be impaired in patients with PAD during exposure to acute hyperoxia, an oxidative stressor. In 20 PAD patients and 16 healthy, sex and age-matched controls, beat-by-beat heart rate (HR, from ECG) and blood pressure (BP, with Finometer) were recorded for 10 minutes durin...
