Open educational resources for otorhinolaryngology : A  pilot study on needs assessment and implementation
CONCLUSION: This project yielded the first OER from a German ENT department, tailored to the German medical curriculum. One significant barrier to OER use in medicine, more than in other fields, is data protection. This challenge can be navigated by obtaining consent to publish patient data as OER. OER hold the promise to play a pivotal role in fostering cooperation and collaboration among educators, aiding educators in lesson preparation, and simultaneously enhancing didactic quality.PMID:38625372 | DOI:10.1007/s00106-024-01465-4 (Source: HNO)

Severity of gambling behaviors: exploring associations with venues, legality, and substance use
ConclusionThough more research attention should be paid to gambling behaviors, harm reduction gambling interventions should be made available to all categories on the continuum of severity of gambling behaviors. The present study provides evidence-based information to promote health policies that aim to prevent and reduce harm for Israeli gamblers. (Source: Israel Journal of Health Policy Research)

Advancing Youth Justice
Child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs) play a crucial role beyond the provision of clinical care. CAPs are uniquely placed to understand and help patients navigate the fine line among psychiatric care, health and well-being, and the laws and policies supporting or impairing these processes. Focusing on vulnerable populations, such as legal system impacted youth and families, CAPs can contribute to the ongoing development of a more just and equitable world for the children of today and of tomorrow. Identifying carers in general practice (STATUS QUO): a multicentre, cross-sectional study in England
Conclusions Many more participants self-identified as a carer than were recorded on participating GP lists. Improvements in the recording of the population’s caring status need to be actioned, to ensure that supportive implementation strategies for carers are effectively received. Using automated check-in facilities for research continues to provide high participation rates. (Source: BMJ Open)

Role of the Cerebellum in the Construction of Functional and Geometrical Spaces
AbstractThe perceptual and motor systems appear to have a set of movement primitives that exhibit certain geometric and kinematic invariances. Complex patterns and mental representations can be produced by (re)combining some simple motor elements in various ways using basic operations, transformations, and respecting a set of laws referred to as kinematic laws of motion. For example, point-to-point hand movements are characterized by straight hand paths with single-peaked-bell-shaped velocity profiles, whereas hand speed profiles for curved trajectories are often irregular and more variable, with speed valleys and inflecti...

Litigation in Gender Affirming Surgery: Reviewing Five Decades of the Medical Malpractice Landscape
The present study sought to analyze malpractice cases related to gender affirming surgery to provide information to physicians as it may serve to minimize the risk of malpractice suits. The Westlaw and Lexis Nexis databases were queried for jury verdicts and settlements related to gender affirming surgery malpractice lawsuits. A total of 26 cases were identified between 1970 and 2020, five of which were determined relevant on further review. Motives included adverse surgical and medical outcomes, and failure to treat. Impact of a quality improvement initiative on medical management of Veterans with peripheral artery disease
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a leading cause of atherosclerotic cardiovascular morbidity and is associated with increased rates of lower extremity amputation (LEA).1 PAD is a strong predictor of both cardiovascular and overall mortality, even more so than prior MI.2,3 In fact, PAD in the absence of known CAD predicted cardiovascular events more strongly than did CAD.4 (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)

Drug recognition experts in trials: perspectives from criminal justice system actors
Brittany Solensten, Dale Willits Policing: An International Journal, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The purpose of this study was to fill the gap in understanding the impact of Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evidence and testimony in driving under the influence (DUI) trials. This was accomplished by documenting and analyzing the perceptions of DREs and the DRE program across different stakeholders to understand how and when this type of evidence is used in DUI trials. The methodology is a qualitative case study of the DRE program in one police agency in Washington. Data were collected using semi-structured in...
